Outstanding Results in Cultivation of Doctoral Students Achieved by Queen’s Univeristy and Fudan
Under the support by CSC funding,Jin Huan,a doctoral student in the School of Public Health of Fudan University made his visit at Queen’s University in Canada in 2009-2011. During his study in Canada,he has firstly published the electronic edition in October 31, 2011 then a paper edition in March 1, 2012 the article“Longer-Term Outcomes of Letrozole Versus Placebo After 5 Years of Tamoxifen in the NCIC MA. 17 Trial: Analyses Adjusting for Treatment Crossover”in Journal of Clinical Oncology. This article was accomplished under the guidance of Tu Dongsheng, a professor in the Department of Medical Statistics of Queen’s University and Zhao Naiqing, a professor in the School of Public Health of Fudan University.
Journal of Clinical Oncology is a top magazine in the field of clinical oncology, and its impact factor is 18.97. Because this study has evaluated the intervention of long-term prognosis of early cancer patients in a beneficial way, oncology researchers attached great importance to it and JCO also published the comments from other experts towards this research in the meanwhile. This is a great opportunity for instructors in two schools to further the cooperation in doctoral students’ training and collaborative research.

Fudan Professors Contribute to GM Cotton Project
On March 20, 2012, press conference on GM (genetically modified) cotton project, which is a major project on the development of new GM crops, was held by expert panel in Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Expert panel officially announced the breakthrough China has made in the field of second generation of GM cotton fiber improvement. Under the financial support of GM major project, GM cotton fiber research has reached a world leading level and owned the independent intellectual properties such as international patent of invention, solving the long-term problem that all high-end cotton used in China was imported from other countries. GM cotton fiber is another milestone scientific and technological achievement which has been made in the field of hi-tech cotton after GM anti-insect cotton.
The research team led by Prof. Yang Jinshui from National Laboratory of Genetic Studies, School of Life Science actively joined the project of Second Generation of GM Cotton Fiber Improvement and greatly promoted its development. From the year 2005, making full use of its advantage in functional genetic research, Prof. Yang’s team carried out cotton fiber improvement research together with Chinese Cotton Institute.
For quite a long period, low-quality cotton fiber is a main constraint in cotton production. Therefore, how to improve the quality of cotton fiber is an important task for the researchers. The quality of cotton fiber involves many indexes including length, hardness, flexibility and fiber yield, among which length is the most important one. Based on former research, Prof. Yang modified csRRM gene which can regulate the size of plant cell and put it into cotton fiber, enlarging the cell volume by prolonging the cell circle, thus achieving the goal of improving the quality of fiber. After 6 years’ arduous work, many new species of cotton with high application value in breeding and production of cotton have been bred by Fudan University and Chinese Cotton Institute. For example, compared with traditional cotton varieties, new cotton material called high-quality large-size boll csRRM GM cotton improves a lot in the length of fiber, weight and Boll getting capability, having a large potential in high yield.
The big progress which has been made in in the field of second generation of GM cotton laid a solid foundation for the development of cotton plant in the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015). As it can be expected, more achievements will be made under the joint effort among universities, institutes and production sector.

All for Love: Stories of Helping Wondering Cats on Fudan Campus
As the bike bell rang, over ten cats cast timorous eyesight outside from under the bush, with several of them sticking out their expectant heads. A woman in black was approaching with a dark basket on the back seat of her bike. “Mimi…” as she murmured, a team of cats echoed “Miaow, miaow…” and gathered around her like babies. The woman, then, opened the basket and put cat meals and water in different plates. Like a tendering mom, she called each name of the cat, and told them to help themselves.
There are a large number of homeless cats on the campus of Fudan. They do not have adequate food and reliable shelter from rain and storm. The lady who served them food and water is one of volunteers who provide spontaneous and regular care for them. It is told that some volunteers adopt these cute creatures, some others send food and water for them, while some others build them shelters. With a mixture of joy and worry, the volunteers are persevering in providing possible help for those cats, exploring better means to take care of their vulnerable life.
