Fudan President Yang Yuliang Attended Global Summit of University Presidents 2011

From April 23 to 24, Fudan President Yang Yuliang was invited to attend Global Summit of University Presidents 2011 & APRU's 15th Annual Presidents Meeting in Beijing, which is a part of Tsinghua University's centennial celebrations. Over 130 well-known universities worldwide participated in the summit. As the Co-chair of the Summit, President Yang Yuliang moderated the breakout discussion on the topic of Global Governance on the afternoon of April 24.

 

The theme of the summit is "Global Social Economy and Higher Education". In conjunction with the APRU and its 15th Annual Presidents Meeting, the Summit aims to discuss strategic issues that are critical to the future development of universities and cooperation between higher education institutions. State Councilor Liu Yandong delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony. Minister of Education Yuan Guiren, Chancellor Henry T. Yang of the University of California, Santa Barbara and Chairman of the APRU, and Tsinghua University President Gu Binglin also attended the ceremony and made welcome addresses.

 

After detailed discussions, the university presidents jointly reached the "Tsinghua Consensus", which says universities should strengthen cooperation and exchanges among universities in different regions in the backdrop of globalization; as university functions expand, the fundamental task of higher education is commitment to excellence; universities should play a more important role in energy security, public health, climate change, sustainable development and other international issues; and universities should help inherit, develop, and improve the development of human civilization.

Shanghai Forum 2011 Preparatory Meeting

In the afternoon of April 20th, Shanghai Forum 2011 Preparatory Meeting was held in the multi-functional hall on the second floor of Yifu Science Building, Fudan University.  Yang Yuliang, President of Fudan University and Kim Jae-Youl, President of the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies attended the meeting.  They made a speech and a summary respectively.  The meeting was hosted by Wang Weiping, Deputy Director of the Organizing Committee of Shanghai Forum and Vice-president of Fudan University.  The Organized Committee of the forum, the Academic Committee of the forum and chairpersons of each sub-forum also attended the meeting. 

 

Vice-president Wang Weiping stated that the main purpose of this meeting was to receive reports about the preparatory progress of Shanghai Forum 2011 in three major perspectives at a time when the forum would be officially held in a month.  Yuan Zhigang, Director of the Academic Committee of Shanghai Forum and Dean of the College of economics, described in detail about the progress of the preparation in academic aspect and then he introduced some special programs of Shanghai Forum 2011 which mainly included academic activities before the forum and a series of round tables. Then Chen Yinzhang, general secretary of the Organizing Committee of Shanghai Forum, introduced the progress of the preparation in the aspect of agenda and arrangement in a clear and concise way.  At last, Xiao Sijian, Head of Department of Publicity, Fudan University, made a report about the project of news release.  In addition to media cooperation and supporting units, he also introduced major breakthroughs in publicity this year, including cooperation with television channels.

 

After these reports, President YangYuliang made a concise summary, recognizing the achievement of the preparatory work.  He noted specially that the fundamental change in Shanghai Forum in the past few years was to pay more attention to the academic nature of the forum.  He also emphasized that to strengthen the academic nature was not to make it too highbrow to be popular, but to make it suitable for both refined and popular tastes so that both scholars and ordinary people could get inspirations and incentives from it. Kim Jae-You, President of the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, conveyed sincere respect to all hardworking parties, expressed his recognition and confidence of cooperation in the past and the future, and sent best wishes for the upcoming Shanghai Forum 2011.

Visit of Fudan Delegation Led by President Yang to U.S. Yielded Rich Fruits

From April 4 to 9, 2011, a Fudan delegation led by President Yang Yuliang visited the US and made a series achievements. Members of the delegation include Prof. Peng Xizhe, Dean of School of Social Development and Public Policy, Prof. Wu Xinbo, Deputy Dean of School of International Relations and Public Affairs as well as Deputy Director of Center for American Studies, and Dr. Zhu Chouwen, Executive Director of Foreign Affairs Office.

 

April 4 and 5, President Yang attended the 5th UN Global Colloquium of University Presidents in University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of UN, delivered a key-note speech at the opening ceremony on April 4.

 

April 6, Fudan delegation visited Georgetown University (GTU), one of Fudan’s important strategic partners, and talked about exchange and cooperation with President John DeGioi and Provost James O’Donnell. Later, President Yang met Dr. Zhu Min, a Fudan alumnus and Special Advisor to President of International Monetary Fund.

 

April 7 was the busiest day of the visit. In the morning, the delegation visited United States Department of State, and discussed cultural exchange and cooperation with assistants to Undersecretary including Alina L. Romanowski, Joseph R.Donovan and Jennifer Stout. Then the delegation visited Chinese Embassy, at the invitation of Ambassador Zhang Yesui, to whom President Yang briefing Fudan delegation’s visit to the States. In the afternoon, the delegation visited respectively the Brookings Institution and United States Institute of Peace.

 

April 8, right after arriving in St. Louis, the delegation started visit at Washington University, and discussed cooperation with Vice President James Wertsch and his colleagues. Prof. Ralph S. Quatran especially expressed his hope to start cooperation in “3+2” program. In the afternoon, the delegation met Prof. Mahendra Gupta, Dean of Olin Business School. During discussion of cooperation, Prof. Wu Xinbo expressed the possibility to start a joint EMPA program with Olin.

 

On April 8 and 9, Dr. Zhu Chouwen had two individual conversations with Prof. James Wertsch, discussing future cooperation between the two universities. On April 9, President Yang had a talk with President Mark Wrighton, touching upon various possible exchange and cooperation, including student exchange, faculty exchange, courses taught in English, joint degrees, general education, etc. A memorandum of overall exchange and cooperation was signed after the meeting.

 

Another remarkable outcome is direct communication with alumni in every city visited. President Yang briefed to them the development of teaching, research and administration at Fudan, and expressed his hope that all alumni will support their Alma Mater in the future.

Japanese Translation of A New Book on History of Chinese Literature Published

The Japanese edition of A New Book on History of Chinese Literature (Vol. I), a book written by the distinguished Fudan Professor Zhang Peiheng and some others, was recently published by Kansai University Press, the first time that Chinese literature history is translated and introduced abroad since the founding of the PRC. The Japanese edition published in Japan was translated by a team led by Professor Inoue Tarzan, a senior sinologist in Kansai University.

 

Since its publication, the three-volume work of A New Book on Chinese Literature History has attracted much attention in China, winning the first prize in the ninth Shanghai Philosophy and Social Sciences Publication Awards, the Academic Contribution Award in the tenth Shanghai Philosophy and Social Sciences Awards, and selected in the second list of the original publications project “A Hundred Patriotic Films/Songs/Books” by the State Press and Publication Administration. Professor Zhang Peiheng has long dedicated himself to the research of Chinese literature and has made great achievements in advancing the combined research of both ancient and modern Chinese literature, enjoying a wide reputation within the academic circle.

 

The Symposium on the publication of the Japanese edition A New Book on History of Chinese Literature (Vol. I) as well as the translation and introduction of Chinese Literature was held in Fudan University on May 3rd. The symposium invited well-known scholars and translators of literature history from Japan, Korea, and America as well as from Hong Kong and the mainland including Professor Inoue Tarzan. The scholars and experts discussed the history and current situation of Chinese literature translation and creation in East Asia and western countries, the standards for translating and introducing Chinese literature, the related translation method and principles, and the prospect of Chinese literature translation and introduction etc.

 

It is learned that the Korean translation of this work led by Professor Li Hongzhen, a well-known sinologist in Korea, has started in 2010 October and is estimated to be finished before the end of 2011.

 

VISITOR

Visit by President of Rice University

On April 21, Prof. YANG Yuliang, President of Fudan University, met with Prof. David W. Leebron, President of Rice University, and his wife Ms. Y. Ping Sun. Prof. Peng Xizhe, Dean of School of Social Development and Public Policy, Prof. Zhu Chouwen, Executive Director of Foreign Affairs office also attended the meeting

President Yang inquired President Leebron’s trip in China, briefed his recent visit to U.S., mentioned the propose to promote Sino-US student exchange set forth by President Obama and Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong and expressed welcome for more U.S. students to study at Fudan University. President Yang also briefly introduced the management and reform on the usage of “211” and “985” funds when he served as Director General of the Department of Degree and Postgraduate Education, State Council of the People’s Republic of China. They also discussed the pros and cons of college rankings system.

 

President Leebron and his wife Ms. Sun visited China regularly in recent years. He introduced the newly established Urban Research Center of Rice University and welcomed scholars from Fudan University to visit and conduct academic collaborations.

 

After the meeting, President Leebron and Prof. Peng Xizhe discussed the cooperation between Fudan and Rice in population research filed. 

 

 

Visit by ULB Rector

On April 18, a delegation from Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) led by Rector Prof. Didier Viviers visited Fudan University, and was warmly welcomed by Prof. Yang Yuliang, President of Fudan University. The two presidents renewed the cooperation agreement between Fudan and ULB and signed a new student exchange agreement.

 

The delegation includes Rector Prof. Didier Viviers, Vice Rector for International Relations Prof. Serge Jaumain, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Professor Jean-Michel De Waele, International Relations Officer Mr. Jean-Louis Moortgat. The Consul General of Belgium in Shanghai Mr. Bruno Georges also joined the meeting with President Yang.

 

After the signing ceremony, the ULB delegation had a very constructive talk with representatives from Fudan School of Foreign Languages and Literature, School of Management, School of Journalism, School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Centre for European Studies as well as Fudan Foreign Affairs Office. The two sides discussed in details to further strengthen the privileged partnership between ULB and Fudan.

 

 

President Peretz Larie of Israel's Technion University visited Fudan
Vice-Preisident Cai Dafeng met President Peretz Larie of Israel's Technion University (Israel Institute of Technology) at the VIP room of Foreign Affairs Office on April 27, 2011. During the talk, President Peretz Larie expressed recognition for Fudan University and showed expectation for the future cooperation between the two universities. Vice-Preisident Cai Da-feng welcomed the President on behalf of Fudan and strongly supported the cooperation between two sides.

 

Israel's Technion University and Fudan University have signed bilateral agreement in 2006. The visit of the Israeli Techonion hopes to renew the agreement, and proposed other specific details of cooperation intentions including faculty exchanges and student exchanges.

 

Technion University of Israel is one of important partners of Fudan, serving as another choice and platform for students and teachers exchange. Technion University is Israel's most famous university, which has many Nobel Prize winners. The University was founded in 1912, and the natural sciences, engineering and construction are its strong points.
