Cause for Cancer by Oncometabolite 2HG Discovered by Fudan University
With the supervision of three renowned experts Prof. XIONG Yue, Prof. GUAN Kunliang and Prof. ZHAO Shimin, PhD candidates XU Wei and YANG Hui from Fudan Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBS) recently discovered the mechanism of an oncometabolite called “2-HG” causing gliomas and Leukemia. This research breakthrough was published as a cover story on the January issue of Cancer Cell, an international top journal in the area of tumor researches.
As indicated in the press release of Cancer Cell, the significance of the research result by the IBS research team is that they discovered a new way of controlling the occurrence and deterioration of cancer cells by α-ketoglutarate (α-KG) and multiple dioxygenases in the human body. The finding may have positive effects on the search for new treatment target of gliomas.
There is no miracle drug for gliomas, and its treatment has been mainly surgery. The research has provided a new target and prevention direction for pharmaceutical treatment of many cancers including gliomas.

Fudan’s Research Finding Won 2010 National Natural Science Award
The 2010 National Science and Technology Award Ceremony was held in Beijing on January 14. Chinese leaders Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang attended the meeting and cordially met with the winners. Prof. Qin Lunxiu, Prof. Ye Qinghai, Prof. Tang Zhaoyou from Liver Cancer Institute of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University were awarded the Second Prize of 2010 National Natural Science Award with their research finding "newly discovered mechanism of liver cancer metastasis and its significance."
Before that, the Liver Cancer Institute has won 2 first prizes, 1 second prize and 2 third prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award. It is learned that the Liver Cancer Institute led by academician Prof. Tang Zhaoyou was established in 1968 and they launched "three battles" - "small hepatocellular carcinoma", "unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma after resection of narrow" and ‘recurrence and metastasis of liver cancer’ on the research. After 40 years of persistent and effective efforts, the liver cancer research was deepened by changing liver cancer from incurable to curable, which created a world wonder in its treatment.

Fudan’s Research Finding Won 2010 National Science and Technology Progress Award
The 2010 National Science and Technology Award Ceremony was held in Beijing on January 14. Fudan Unviersity won the Second Prize with the research finding “Basic and clinical research of Neuroendocrinology kidney deficiency syndrome”, leaded by Academician Prof. Shen Ziyin, Professor of medicine at Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University.
Academician Prof. Shen’s systematic and carefully designed research has been regarded as the paradigm in the field of integrative medicine in the past 50 years. His work set out to answer the question of whether the core concepts of Chinese medicine based on “Vital Energy” are purely metaphysical constructs or with a biological basis. Through various clinical researches, his team initially revises the basis of kidney deficiency syndrome in molecular and cellular biology. This finding and theory have been applied successfully in treating a wide range of illnesses such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, pre-mature aging, kidney stones, withdrawal reactions to corticosteroids, and sub-clinical Addison’s disease.
Dr. Shen is the first author of 6 books, two of which were regarded as classical research monograph in kidney research and translated into Japanese. He published over 200 research articles which have been quoted over 600 times.
