EVENT

Energy Technology Prospective 2010 Concludes

Sponsored by the International Energy Agency (IEA), organized by Fudan University and supported by Shanghai Energy Association, the official launch of the Energy Technology Prospective 2010 (ETP 2010) was held on Nov 4 at Shanghai Okura Garden Hotel. IEA Deputy Executive Director Richard Jones attended the ceremony and delivered keynote speech. Vice Presidentof Fudan University Prof. Chen Limin gave a speech on behalf of Fudan University.

Prof. Chen Limin briefly introduced ETP 2010 and expressed his warm welcome to Mr. Richard Jones. Chen also presented engaging efforts and outstanding contribution of Fudan University in energy and technology related area, such as the establishment and development of Energy Research Center at Fudan University and long-term friendly and cooperative relationship between IEA and Fudan.

ETP 2010 Report shows that a very considerable investment will be needed to meet the world’s growing energy needs. The baseline scenario estimates a total investment, between 2010 and 2050, of USD 270 trillion. Meeting energy demand growth in a way that supports the “50% by 2050” goal will be considerably more expensive: the BLUE Map scenario projects investment requirements of USD 316 trillion, a further increase of 17% (USD 46 trillion). The report points out that the next decade is critical. If emissions do not peak by around 2020 and decline steadily thereafter, achieving the needed 50% reduction by 2050 will become much more costly.

Finally, the report made the conclusion that the most vital message of ETP 2010 is that an energy technology revolution is within reach. Achieving it will stretch the capacities of all energy-sector stakeholders and entail substantial upfront costs, but over the long term these will be more than offset by the benefits. Governments, investors and consumers around the world need to take bold, decisive action to initiate and advance change in their respective spheres of influence – and increase their commitment to working together.

The conference also invited Professor Academician Jin Donghan for comments. In guest interaction session, Mr. Richard Jones, Academician Jin Donghan, Mr. Shi Rongmin, Councilor of Shanghai Energy Conservation Association, and Ms. Wu Libo, Executive Deputy Director of Energy Research Center at Fudan University discussed the questions focusing topics on hot issues in energy technology area.
