Fudan Contemporary China Research Center Established
Fudan Contemporary China Research Center was established, December 20, 2009. This Center aims to be “rooted in Academia and to pursue excellence”. Its research will focus on “China-based global view”.
This Center will feature problem-oriented and interdisciplinary research, and make full use of social science platforms at Fudan. The Center is also committed to “rediscover China” and to “promote in-depth research of contemporary China”. A new platform to bridge Chinese Social Science and the world-class research is expected from the Center, with its good relations with the UCLA Asia Institute, Brussels Institute of Contemporary China Studies, and the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre. Its network to other world renowned centers for Chinese studies will also contribute.

Fudan Liver Cancer Institute Celebrated 40th Anniversary
Fudan’s Liver Cancer Institute celebrated its 40th anniversary on December 26, 2009. It is one of the two major Chinese institutes for liver cancer research. This national key institute pays highly attention to both liver cancer clinical practice and its fundamental research. Professor Tang Zhaoyou, Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences celebrated his 80th birthday on this occasion as well.
During their remarks, Mr. Shen Xiaoming, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, Mr. Xu Jianguang, head of Shanghai Health Bureau, and Professor Wang Weiping, Executive Vice President of Fudan University, spoke highly on the contributions made by the Institute to China’s liver cancer research.

Land and Resources Economic Research Center Established
On January 10, Fudan Land and Resources Economic Research Center was officially established and an unveiling ceremony was held. Prof. Dai Xingyi from Fudan Department of Environmental Science and Engineering was appointed inaugural Director of the Center.
Fudan Land and Resources Economic Research Center will focus on the theoretical and empirical research of the integration and optimization of urban functions and land zoning, agricultural and natural land, house site and land for non-agricultural construction purposes. The establishment of the Center provides Shanghai one more multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary research platform.
After the founding ceremony, Prof. Dai presided over an academic forum on “Transition of Development Approach and Land Use”. Associate Professor Zhou Weilin from Fudan Institute of Urban Economic Research, Professor Ren Yuan from Fudan School of Social Development and Public Policy, Senior Engineer Yu Jun and Peng Lixun from Shanghai Institute of Geological Survey made presentations respectively.
Vice Director of Shanghai Municipal Planning and Land Resources Bureau Chen Wenhua, along with other leaders and experts, were present at the unveiling ceremony. Fudan Vice Chancellor Chen Limin addressed at the ceremony.

Fudan Triumphs in National and Local Science and Technology Awards in 2009
In 2009, Fudan triumphs in all kinds of science and technology awards both in national and local level.
In terms of awards by Shanghai municipality, academician Chen Haozhu from Zhongshan Hospital was awarded title of People with Great Contributions to Science and Technology for the year of 2009. Fudan had 21 projects winning Shanghai Science and Technology Award, among which 6 projects including the research group "Theoretical Research on the Transformation between Golden Cage Structure and Nano System Structure" led by Gong Xingao won the 1st prizes. Research group "R&D on Key Techniques for Image-guided Surgery (IGS) and Related Products" led by Song Zhijian and another 9 projects won the 2nd prizes. 5 projects were awarded the 3rd prizes, including "Low-temperatured Plasma Industrial Odorous Waste Gas Treating Technology and Its Application" led by Hou Huiqi. Jiang Jiaqi (US) from EENT Hospital received Award for International Cooperation.
As for the Award for Excellent Achievement in Scientific Researches among Higher Education Institutions, two research teams won 1st prizes for natural science, one led by Ma Lan, "Research on the New Mechanism for Signal Transduction of Opium Receptor", and another by Jin Yaqiu, "Theories on Polarized Electromagnetic Scattering and Transmitting, and Spatial Microwave Remote Sensing Earth Observation". The 2nd prize for natural science went to teams led by Mei Yan'ai and Liu Shanlin separately, while that for technology invention went to Long Yingcai and his team. Besides, Chen Jianmin’s research team was awarded the 2nd prize for Progress in Science and Technology.

750 Admitted to Fudan by 2010 Interview
Fudan University held autonomous admission interview from February 5 to 7, 2010. 1114 applicants from Shanghai who were qualified for the interview and 411 applicants from Jiangsu and Zhejiang province were interviewed by faculty. Based on experts’ decision, there will be 550 pre-enrolled students from Shanghai, and about 100 from Zhejiang and another 100 from Jiangsu province admitted. All bachelor programs are open for choice to the admitted freshmen.

Chinese Culture Study Camp held
Ten-days Chinese Culture Study Camp for Taiwan students with the theme "Sleepless in Shanghai” was launched on January 23, 2010 at Fudan University. Dr. Xu Zheng, Vice President of Fudan University, Li Zhong-bin, Deputy Secretary General of the Association for Relations across the Taiwan Strait and Zheng You-ping, the guest commentator of CCTV-4 attended the opening ceremony. Members of the camp are 130 students from more than ten universities. They also visited Suzhou and Yangzhou and enjoyed communication with Fudan students.
The highlight of the event is “Dialogue with Masters”. The guest speakers included Zhou Hanmin, Deputy Director of the Executive Committee of World Expo 2010 Shanghai, Yan Yi-min, a prominent lawyer, and Zhangfang, General Manager of China of Discovery Channel.

Chinese Spring Festival Celebrated on Campus
On Feb. 8, 2010, Fudan University students and teachers celebrated Chinese Spring Festival on Handan Campus. Secretary of Party Committee of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission Li Xuanhai, Vice secretary of Party Committee of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission Xie Yilong, Chancellor of Fudan University Prof. Qin Shaode, Vice President of Fudan University Dr. Xu Zheng as well as directors of all departments, representative teachers of all schools and over 500 students, Chinese and international who stayed on campus for Chinese New Year gathered together to welcome the new year of tiger.
Secretary of Party Committee of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission Li Xuanhai, gave a speech on the ceremony. On behalf of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, he gave all the students “lucky money” for the New Year and a 100-yuan telephone card. Fudan Chancellor Qin Shaode gave a toast, encouraging all the teachers and students to make persistent efforts to achieving more in the year 2010.

Science Published Two Papers on Biomedical by Fudan Authors
On February 19, the latest edition of Science published two papers of research results on a new mechanism of protein acetylation. The study was carried out by Dr. Shimin Zhao, Dr Qunying Lei and other team members of molecular cytology lab in Bio-Medical Research Institute of Fudan University. The two articles, titled Acetylation of Metabolic Enzymes Coordinates Carbon Source Utilization and Metabolic Flux and Regulation of Cellular Metabolism by Protein Lysine Acetylation were to present study on acetylation of proteins and the regulation of metabolic pathways. Such a close attention paid by Science also illustrates the importance and innovation of relevant research conducted by the teams.

Commendation Meeting for Prof. Gu Chaohao Held
On Jan. 18, Commendation Meeting for Prof. Gu Chaohao was held, teacher and student representatives attended the meeting to congratulate Prof. Gu Chaohao on receiving the State Science and Technology Top Awards. Chancellor of Fudan University, Prof. Qin Shaode, President of Fudan University, Prof. Yang Yuliang, as well as all the leaders of Fudan University attended the meeting. Vice secretary of Party Committee of Fudan University Wang Xiaolin hosted the ceremony. Directors of all departments, students and teachers of all schools took part in the meeting in Wu Wenzheng auditorium. At the same time, students and teachers in Fenglin Campus, Zhangjiang Campus, Jiangwan Campus joined the teleconference as well. Approximately 2000 people joined the event.
Prof. Gu Chaohao said that the award actually reflects the attention that the country pays to scientists and the ambition that the country expects from scientists. He is fortunate to be living in the age when great revolutions are taking place and he is so proud, since he could make some contributions to this great age. He concluded his special characteristics in teaching: 1. Follow the basic rules of scientific research, which is study assiduously, pursue truth, and strive to innovate. 2. Pay more attention on the cross-disciplinary subjects, especially on some cross-disciplinary subject as fluid mechanics and theoretical physics, which brought him many new thoughts in mathematics. Meanwhile, encourage students to master cross-disciplinary knowledge among partial differential equations, differential geometry, and mathematical physics.3. Emphasize on the training of young generation. Tell them the new breakthroughs, promising subjects and new research areas, in order to provide them with good conditions and enough supports to reach the summit. Prof. Gu Chaohao also said that we should cultivate the younger generation of scientists. He wished that China become one of world’s strong nations in mathematics area in near future.

Vice Governor of Central Bank joined Fudan.
The 2nd session of “Anti-money Laundering Summit in China” was held at Fudan. At the opening session, Mr. Su Ning, Vice Governor of Central Bank, accepted the invitation from Fudan University to serve as Fudan’s lecture professor and Honorary Director of Chinese Center for Anti-money Laundering Studies at Fudan. Professor Yang Yuliang, President of Fudan University conferred this honor upon him.
The host of this Summit, Chinese Center for Anti-money Laundering Studies at Fudan, was established in November, 2004, approved by government and registered at the Central Bank. Specialized on the research of anti-money laundering and anti -terrorism in Finance, it is also the only institute authorized to use the word “Chinese” in its name.

Tang Zhaoyou Elected Outstanding Sci. & Tech. Figure by SAST
Prof. Tang Zhaoyou from Zhongshan Hospital Department of Liver Oncology, Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of Fudan Institute for Liver Cancer, was elected one of the outstanding figures with great contributions to scientific researches in Shanghai for the past 60 years since the founding of PRC. On January 12, Vice-Chairman of Shanghai Association of Science and Technology (SAST). Yang Guangshen awarded the certificate to Prof. Tang together with new year’s greetings.
An internationally renowned expert in liver cancer researches, Prof. Tang Zhaoyou has in his over 40 years of research career created a world wonder in the treatment of hepatocellular carcioma (HCC) by increasing the 5 accumulative years survival rate of patients with liver cancer from 4.2% in 1960s to 43.3% since 1990s on. Breakthroughs in researches on "small liver cancer", "cytoreduction and resection of unresectable HCC", "recrudescence and metastasis of HCC" among the others brought him 1st and 3rd National Prices for Progress in Science and Technology, Gold Medal awarded by US National Cancer Institute, and this recent honor.

Prof. CHEN Zhimin Honored with Jean Monnet Chair Professor
Prof. CHEN Zhimin was recently selected as the Jean Monnet Chair Professor. Jean Monnet Chairs are teaching posts with a specialization in European integration studies. As a prestigious politician in Europe, Jean Monnet is regarded by many as a chief architect of European Unity. He was also an active advocate, one of the founders and early leaders of European Union, known as Father of Europe Union. Jean Monnet Chairs are given to the scholars who support and develop the research and teaching in the study of Europe integration.
As the sixth professor in Mainland China who has been awarded "Chair Professor", Prof. CHEN Zhimin is dedicated to European studies for many years, and wrote a book titled "Foreign Policies Integration of EU: Mission Impossible?". In 2008, Prof. Dai Bingran of Fudan Center for European Studies was also awarded by European Commissioner Ján Figel with Jean Monnet Prize.

Visit by Jean-Louis BOURSIN
On Jan 22, Professor Jean-Louis BOURSIN, Department Director of Paris Sorbonne and Chairman of Sorbonne Foundation visited Fudan University and discussed the possibility of collaboration with Professor Wang Weiping, Executive Vice Ppresident of Fudan University.
Established in 13th century, Sorbonne is a world-wide prestigious institution that now consists of four universities, two colleges and three units, such as Paris I University, Paris III University, Paris V University and Paris VI University. Sorbonne has a distinguished alumni population including Maria Curie, Pierre Curie and Simon De Beauvoir.

Visit by Senior Vice Chancellor of Duke University
On Jan 20, Professor R. Sanders Williams, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Duke University, accompanied by Prof. Michael Merson, Director of the Global Health Institute at Duke University and Professor Longen Chen, Counselor of Chinese Affairs of Duke University, visited the Fudan University Fenglin Campus. The purpose of this visit is to discuss the establishment of Duke University overseas branch and scientific and educational collaboration between Fudan and Duke, mainly focus on global health, public health and environmental health fields. Professor Wang Weiping, Executive Vice President and Director of Medical Centre of Fudan University received the delegation.
After the visit both reach four consensuses: first to begin from the global health program, cooperatively conducting short-term courses; second to use collaboratively methods gaining scientific funds; third to further exploring the collaboration on social science, public policy, engineering and law; and fourth to establish practical cooperation models.

"Yale 50" Graduate delegation visited Fudan
"Yale 50" graduate delegation visited Handan campus and Medical campus, January 6, 2010. a group of Fudan graduate students received the delegation and guided a campus tour. Vice President Xu Zheng, who attended welcome gathering on Handan Campus, said in her address that Yale and Fudan have extended long-term friendship, collaborating with each other in many aspects. She wished the students enhance mutual understanding through these activities, promote friendship and make progress together. Dr. Zhou Lizhi, Director of Graduate Affairs office, and Dr. Xin Qiang, Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Office, joined this activity. Meanwhile, another group of Yale 50 delegation, the Yale medical students on medical campus, visited Fudan Medical campus and had a seminar after a campus tour.

Visit by President of University of Malaya
Professor Ghauth Jasmon, President of University of Malaya, headed a six-member delegation visited Fudan on January 4. It is the first time for its President to visit Fudan. He showed strong interests in Fudan's related disciplines and wished enhanced cooperation and exchange relations with Fudan, especially in medical student exchange.
University of Malaya is a comprehensive university that has studies in liberal arts, natural sciences and medicine. It is the largest and most renowned university in Malaysia. Its Chinese department is the most influential discipline in this university. University of Malaya is a member of APRU. Professor Chen Yinzhang, Pro-vice President of Fudan held conversations with Professor Ghauth Jasmon.Dr. Xin Qiang, Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Office joined this conversation.

Italian Minister Luca Zaia Lectured at Fudan
Mr. Luca Zaia, Italian Minister of Food and Forestry Policy visited Fudan on Jan 14, 2010 and lectured at School of Management on "Agricultural enterprises in Italian economy". Vice President Prof. LIU Jianzhong received the minister and the delegation. Prof. Yin Zhiwen, Vice Dean of School of Management, presided over the lecture later. Italian Ambassador Riccardo SESSA and Consul General Massimo ROSCIGNO accompanied the minister.
Minister Zaia remarked that food is closely related to the history and culture of a nation and plays a more important role in the national economy. In the context of globalization, Italy will make great efforts in maintaining the characteristics of its traditional food and originality. It is the belief of Italian government that food gene project will not only better the variety, but also contribute for environmental protection. With the development, every country shall be dedicated for solving world food crisis based on the principle of saving the food. The minister answered the questions raised by Chinese and Italian students on the safety problems of genetically modified food, assessment standards and trade barriers.
Fudan School of Management has started dual master program with Bocconi University since September 2006 and has enrolled 220 students in 4 years, half of whom are Italian students. The cooperation furthered the friendship between the two nations and strengthened the understanding between the two cultures.

Vice President of Edinburgh University Visited Fudan
Prof. Steve Hillier, Vice President of Edinburgh University visited Fudan Medical Campus on Jan 6, 2010. Prof. Jeremy Bradshaw, Director of International affairs at its Medical College and Ms. Nini Yang, Director of its China Rep Office, accompanied Prof. Hillier.
Edinburgh University is one of the partner universities of Fudan and also member of U21 association. Both universities made efforts to set up a Confucius Institute in Edinburgh, which has been assessed as the world leading Confucius Institute for three years successively.
During this visit, the two parties centered on the issues of student exchange, joint PhD programs, collaborations in public health, pharmacy and neuro-biology field, 2+2 undergraduate programs in mathematics, IT and engineering areas, as well as cooperation for summer programs.

Confucius Institutes Co-established by Fudan University won Awards
On the 1st World's Confucius Institute Conference held on December 2009 in Beijing, Confucius Institutes co-established by Fudan University at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland won the world's Advanced Confucius Academy Awards (a total of 20). This is the third time that the above two Confucius Institutes won honorary awards.

7th President's Award Presented
The Prize-awarding Ceremony of the 7th President's Award was held in Guanghua Towers, December 21, 2009. 12 faculties, 2 research teams, 5 students, 3 student groups, and 1 alumnus were awarded. This Award was set in 2003. It is the highest prize awarded in the name of Fudan. During the Ceremony, Professor Yang Yuliang, President of Fudan University elaborated his understanding of this Award, which reflected Fudan Spirit. He said, this Award set its target to encourage those who held academic spirits tightly, those who practiced their business with affection while making achievements silently, and those who strongly advocated idealism. This Award spelt out Fudan Spirits, as the continuation of the spirits put forwarded by the former President, Professor Li Denghui. He encouraged all the Fudaners practicing Fudan Spirits, making contributions to China’s development and to nation’s renaissance.
