Forum on Dialogue and Challenges of Civilizations Concludes
May 11, 2010 is the 400th anniversary of Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci. "Xu Guangqi - Ricci Research Centre of Dialogue among Civilizations" (the "Society for Xu Ricci") of Philosophy School invited more than 60 experts and scholars from home and abroad to discuss the global challenges of 21st century. Prof. Wang Shenghong, former President of Fudan University addressed at the opening ceremony.
Mr. Michel Camdessus, former president of IMF pointed out that the crisis we now face is multiple which constitutes the unprecedented challenges, such as the international financial system crisis, the ecological damage and loss of cultural diversity. These crises influence each other and need to be examined from the perspective of world governance with technical solutions. The establishment of a new economic model is indispensable.
President Stephan Schelensog of Global Ethic Foundation in Tübingen argued that one of the key issues in the 21st century is how to achieve cross-cultural and inter-religious cooperation peacefully. Wars between nations, competitions between religions, clashes of civilizations and dialogues between different civilization and religions are all prerequisites for peace, and the dialogue between civilizations is based on global ethics.
Professor Zhuo Xinping of Institute of World Religions, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Director of Christian Research, Prof. John Lagerwey of French Institute of Higher experiment, Professor Zhang Zhigang of Philosophy and Religious Studies of Peking University made wonderful interpretations on "the global significance of religion in China," "View of five religious dialogue" and "Islamic civilization" among the others.

Shanghai Forum 2010: Reflect, Recover, and Restructure
Shanghai Forum 2010 kicked off on the morning of May 29. Over 300 experts from the academia, politics, commerce and industries invited from more than 30 countries and regions attended. Under the theme “Economic Globalization and the Choice of Asia: Reflect, Recover, and Restructure,” in-depth discussions on economic recovery and transition of Asia finally led to Shanghai Forum Consensus and white papers were published at the closing session.
Discussions were organized into seven sub-forums. They are “Reflection and Restructuring after the Global Financial Crisis,” “Emerging Energy and Low Carbon Economy: the Engine for Asia Economic Transformation,” “Structural Re-adjustment of World Economy and Regional Cooperation”, “Restructuring of International Relations in Asia”, “Public Policies in a Changing World: Roles and Implication”, “Reflection on Asia Cities after the Global Financial Crisis” and “Impact of China’s Economic Recovery: Path and Experience”. In addition, there was a roundtable titled “China’s Capital Market Development and Innovation”.
It is privileged for this year’s forum to have attendees including Tang Jiaxuan, former state-councilor of China, his Excellency Shaukat Aziz, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shen Xiaoming, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, Jae-Won Chey, Vice Chairman and CEO of SK Holdings, Chen Jian, President of the United Nations Association of China, Koguan Leo, President of Asia Society, Li Yang, Vice President of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Jae-Youl Kim, President of Korean Foundation for Advanced Studies, Prof. Lawrence Lau, President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Mukul Sanwal, a consultant for The United Nations Secretariat of the Convention on Climate Change, Prof. Mark Wrighton, President of Washington University in St. Louise, and Prof. Victor Nee from Cornell University.
Shanghai Forum is an international economic forum hosted by Fudan University and sponsored by The Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies. Under the general theme of “Economic Globalization and the Choice of Asia”, the Forum takes its mission as “Concentrating on Asia, Focusing on Hot Issues, Congregating Elites, Promoting Interactions, Enhancing Cooperation and Seeking Consensus”. It endeavors to build a platform for communication among academic, political and commercial circles by inviting leaders and elites of all fields to co-operation and dialogue, so as to provide perspectives and advices for Asia’s overall economic, political, social and cultural progress. Shanghai Forum 2010 is the 5th annual conference. In the past four sessions, 1,100 person-time have attended the forum.

China-UK Managing Quality Services’ Programme Launched at Fudan
On May 7, Fudan Healthcare Investment Co., Ltd., Taivex Health Management & Consulting Co., Ltd., Zhongshan Hospital, Huadong Hospital, Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, EENT Hospital and UK Bupa Group signed an agreement on managing quality services in hospitals, which symbolized China-UK Managing Quality Services'(MQS) Programme has entered into a substantive implemental phase and the special medical services and billing process at Fudan’s affiliated hospitals has aligned with international insurance agency.
Ms. Carma Elliot, Consul General of UK in Shanghai, Executive Vice President Prof. Wang Weiping, Dr. Andrew Vallance-Owen, Global Medical Director of UK Bupa Group, Mr. Zhang Binyun, President of Fudan Healthcare Investment Co., Ltd., and Mr. Fan Jia, Vice Chair of Zhongshan Hospital made speeches at the signing ceremony.
Bupa is an internationalized medical care and healthcare company. As the leader in healthcare industry, it enjoys high reputation in the world and boasts stringent assessment criteria in certifying its cooperative hospitals. Bupa Group’s “Managing Quality Service (MQS)” project is an important part of China-UK Partners in Health Innovation (PiHI) initiative. Bupa ’s MQS project is aimed at improving the quality of management and services of hospitals in China, through an evaluation on hospital’s services. “Bupa Quality Service” Assessment System is an important part of this project, with the assessment criteria focusing on the feelings of patients. In addition, it integrates medical care facilities with dining services so as to provide all-round services to patients. Bupa will offer free services to the participated hospitals and will not charge accreditation fees.

Nordic Centre at Fudan University Celebrates 15th Anniversary
Nordic Centre at Fudan University celebrated its 15th anniversary and opening of the new Nordic Centre Building on Fudan campus from 23rd May to 2nd June. Around 200 guests from all five Nordic governments, member universities, organizations, companies as well as a number of Chinese universities gathered at Fudan to commemorate the 15 years of fruitful collaboration between Chinese and Nordic universities. VIP guests included State Secretary of Swedish Ministry of Education and Research Mr. Peter Honeth, State Secretary of Norwegian Ministry of Research and Higher Education Mr. Kyrre Lekve, Permanent Secretary in the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Mr. Uffe Toudal Pedersen, Secretary General, Research and Innovation Council of Finland Mr. Ilkka Turunen, Commercial Officer of Consulate General of Iceland in Shanghai Mr. Hafliði Sævarsson, Head of Education and Research Department of Nordic Council of Ministers Mr. Gard Titlestad, as well as rectors and vice-rectors from most of the 26 Nordic member universities.
The two week-long celebration featured a host of exciting activities, including 4 seminars “The welfare state and its response to the challenges of the 21st century and book launch: The Nordic Welfare State (Chinese edition)”, “Making it in China – university/business collaboration”, “Sino-Nordic S&T collaboration”, “Art and design - Aalto-Tongji Design Factory Opening” on 25th; Rectors’ Summit “Sino-Nordic Collaboration in Research and Higher Education”, Anniversary/Opening ceremony and celebration dinner on 26th;Expo visits to Sweden Day, Finland Day and Norway Day on 23rd, 27th and 28th; and Student Day-- Student Summit, Career and Education Day and Sino-Nordic music night on 29th. The celebration week concluded with 2010 Ubiquitous Healthcare and Welfare Services and Supporting Technologies Conference which was also the official Nordic Centre opening conference from 31st May to 2nd June.
On the Rectors’ Summit on the morning of 25th, Fudan President Yang Yuliang and Head of Education and Research Department of Nordic Council of Ministers Mr. Gard Titlestad delivered keynote speeches titled “Humanistic Spirit in Universities and General Education” and “Sino-Nordic Cooperation in Higher Education and Research”. Representatives from Tongji University, Zhejiang University and Tongji University, together with rectors of Lund University (Sweden), Oslo University (Norway), Aalto University (Finland), University of Iceland, NTNU (Norway) and HANKEN School of Business (Finland) gave presentations. Two cases of experiences of organizing joint courses between Fudan and Nordic member universities were also shared and discussed during the summit.
On the afternoon of 25th, all the guests witnessed the inauguration of the New Nordic Centre Building by Fudan Chancellor Qin Shaode, Chancellor of University of Tampere (Finland) and Chairwomen of the Nordic Centre Board and Council Krista Varantola, as well as the VIP guests form the five Nordic governments. To celebrate the event, the famous Trondheim Soloists from Norway brought a nice lawn concert to the audience. The guests also had a chance to tour the 2000m2 new building located on Fudan campus, which will be the new home of Nordic Centre and Fudan Foreign Affairs Office.
The Nordic Centre at Fudan University was established in 1995 as a joint venture of 14 Nordic universities and Fudan. Through the past 15 years, Nordic Centre has grown rapidly into an institution of 26 Nordic member universities. By organizing various teaching activities, seminars, conferences, cultural events and facilitating research collaborations, the Nordic Centre has become an important bridge between Chinese and Nordic higher education institutions. The new Nordic Centre Building is believed to further promote Sino-Nordic exchanges and cooperation in many ways in the future.

The 2nd Joint Meeting of “C9” League Held at Fudan
On May 9, the second joint meeting of provosts from Chinese top 9 universities ("C9" League), namely Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Nanjing University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Xi'an Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, was held at Fudan University. Vice President of Fudan Prof. Cai Dafeng attended the meeting and addressed welcome remarks.
During the meeting, several specific implementation measures have been discussed and substantial progress has been made. From September this year, undergraduates of "C9" League member universities will have opportunities to study at another 8 universities. In this fall semester, a total of 330 exchange quota will be available to the undergraduates.
The “C9” also had in-depth discussions on expanding their cooperation to summer school 2010, joint project of social practice and joint internship program to build up more platforms for mutual exchanges.
In Oct. 2009, nine premier universities which were the first members of the “985 Program” joined hands to form the first college league in China and reached an agreement on promoting cooperation and communications among higher education institutions. According to the agreement, the nine universities will take advantage of each other's strengths and share their education resources. The establishment of "C9" indicates China's ambition to build world-class universities and to intensify its influence on the global stage.

Fudan Volunteers Finish Service at Shanghai Expo
On May 16, the first batch of Fudan volunteers completed their service to Shanghai Expo. There have been more than 2,200 Fudan volunteers who worked during both trail and formal Expo operation from April 24 to May 16. “The First Generation of Haibao”, who demonstrated spirit by overcoming different challenges, such as bad weather and unexpectedly large amount of visitors, has won high praise from Shanghai Expo Bureau and Expo visitors.
In the afternoon of the day, a ceremony was held to mark the completion of Fudan volunteer service at “Volunteers’ Home” at the Expo site. Ms. Ying Dongmei, Secretary of Fudan Communist Youth League handed three “gifts” created by Fudan volunteers to the next shift. The first is a Shanghai 2010 Expo flag painted by many Fudan volunteers. The second is 24 suggestions of site service improvement. The third is thirteen Expo volunteer manuals written by Fudan volunteers. Those manuals attempt to offer a collection of useful guidance to Expo volunteers, such as specific volunteer functions of different sites, and recommendation of canteens especially suitable to volunteers.
To congratulate the Fudan volunteers, Fudan University prepared a “special present” to each of them, including an Expo ticket, a working photo and a letter from the University.

Fudan University Confers Honorary Doctor Degree Upon Professor Mark S. Wrighton, Chancellor of Washington University in St Louis
On 29th May 2010, a ceremony was held at Fudan School of Management for conferring honorary doctor degree upon Chancellor of Washington University in St. Louis Professor Mark S. Wrighton. President of Fudan University Professor Yang Yuliang, Vice President Professor Wang Weiping and Emeritus President Professor Wang Shenghong attended the ceremony. So do the representatives of Management School, Graduate School and Environmental Science Department.
Mark S. Wrighton, receiving Ph.D. in chemistry at California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1972, was elected the Chancellor of Washington University in St. Louis in 1995. In the years following his appointment, the University has made significant progress in education quality and scientific research. After receiving the degree on the occasion, Prof. Wrighton presented a thematic talk on “Strengthening Higher Education through International Partnerships”.
In 2007, Fudan University established strategic partnership with WUSTL by jointly launching an EMBA program. Since then on, the cooperation between the two organizations extended to international relationships, social policy, public health, environment and energy. A committee was established to promote further development and bilateral cooperation.

Fudan Alumnus Tang Jiaxuan Lectures at Alma Mater
On May 30, Fudan Alumnus of Class 1955 School of Foreign Languages and Literature, former State Council Member Tang Jiaxuan was invited to give a speech at Life Forum and exchange views with students at Fudan University. This is the first time for Mr. Tang Jiaxuan to return to his Alma Mater after graduation half a century ago.
After a short video named Heavy Rains and Warm Breezes that introduced Tang’s diplomatic life, Mr. Tang Jiaxuan began his speech by recalling his study life at Fudan University. On the occasion, Tang also shared some of his life wisdom with the students.
On the same day, Mr. Tang Jiaxuan attended a joint meeting by Chinese Association for Japanese Studies and National Society of Japanese Economy, visited Fudan Jiangwan Campus and University History Museum and also dined in delight with old classmates.

Visit by Mayor of Montreal
On May 12th, Mayor of Montreal, Mr. Gerald Tremblay visited Fudan, accompanied by representatives of Canadian universities including University of Montreal, University of Quebec and McGill University. President Yang Yuliang warmly welcomed the delegation to Fudan University. At the same time, Fudan University and University of Montreal signed partnership agreement and MoUs on CSC PHD cooperation and Public Health Cooperation. Mr. Gerald Tremblay witnessed the signing ceremony and delivered a speech entitled The Role of the Universities and Their Impact on the Creativity and Innovation of Their Cities. The university representatives introduced their institutions during the meeting. Vice President Gui Yonghao welcomed Vice President from McGill University. He, on behalf of Fudan University, signed an MoU with McGill University.

Visit by Saudi Arabia King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology
President of Saudi Arabia King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) Dr. Al-Suwaiyel visited Fudan University on 13th May 2010. Executive Vice President Professor Zhang Yihua received the delegation. Dr. Al-Suwaiyel wanted to enhance all-round educational cooperation between KACST and Fudan. Meanwhile, deep collaboration in the study of solar energy with universities of China, such as Fudan University, was also what he looked for.
KACST is an independent scientific organization administratively reporting to the Prime Minister. KACST has three main responsibilities, namely proposing national policies for the development of science and technology and developing plans to implement them; coordinating with government agencies, scientific institutions and research centers in the Kingdom to enhance research and exchange information and expertise; and finally conducting applied research and provide advice to the government on science and technology matters. On February 11, 2009, China’s President Hu Jintao visited KACST during his state visit in Saudi Arabia.
During the meeting, KACST introduced its 20-year development plan in twelve fields including energy, petrochemistry, nanotechnology, information technology, aviation and environmental protection. Besides, KACST has direct connections and collaborations with a lot of international scientific research organizations, including Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Currently a research team of 20 experts from CAS was co-acting with KACST on the study of cultivation of date palm and genes of camels. Moreover, MoU on development of telecommunication technology and technician training was sign in July 2007 between Huawei Technologies Co.,Ltd and KACST.

Speech by Foreign Minister of the Principality of Liechtenstein
On May 17, H.E. Ms. Aurelia Frick, Liechtenstein government minister of justice, foreign affairs, and cultural affairs visited Fudan University and gave a speech titled “Liechtenstein: A microstate responds to global challenges“ to Fudan students. Before the speech which was chaired by Prof. Chen Zhimin, Deputy Director of Fudan Institute of International Studies, H.E. Ms. Aurelia Frick was warmly received by Fudan Vice President Gui Yonghao who introduced Fudan’s internationalization.

Juelich Research Center Chairman Visits Fudan
On May 18, Prof. Achim Bachem, Chairman of Juelich Research Center headed a delegation to Fudan University. President Yang Yuliang received the delegation and expressed his warm welcome to Prof. Bachem and his fellow visitors. He introduced the initiatives that Fudan has taken to strengthen international cooperation, faculty exchange and research investment.
Prof. Bachem also introduced the cooperation with our Department of Physics and wished to enhance the joint work in the future.
Juelich Research Center is a world renowned research institute in Germany, taking the lead in the research fields of biology, medicine, environment, new materials, and pharmacy. Fudan and Juelich enjoy a good relationship in cooperation and exchange. President Yang visited Juelich in October last year.

Visit by Australian Foreign Minister
On May 18th Foreign Minister of Australia, The Hon. Stephen Smith,MP,visited Fudan University, accompanied by Australian Ambassador to China Dr Geoff Raby and Consulate General Mr. Tom Connor. Chancellor of Fudan University warmly received the delegation. Mr. Smith delivered a lecture hosted by Fudan School of International Relations and Public Affairs on “Sino-Australian relations – Now and Future” and answered questions from the audience and the press.

Visit by James S.C. Chao and Elaine Lan Chao
On May 19th, James S.C. Chao, Chairman of Foremost Group, and Elaine Lan Chao, Former US Secretary of Labor, together with a delegation visited Fudan University. They were warmly received by Fudan President Prof. Yang Yuliang who expressed appreciation of the efforts Chao’s family had made towards the US-China relationship and cooperation. Dr. James S.C. Chao remarked that he enjoyed returning to campus and wished that his family could make more contributions to the cooperation between China and the United States.
During the visit, James S.C Chao and Elaine Lan Chao visited the School of Management, talking with faculty and scholars. The discussion was hosted by Dean of School of Management, Prof. Lu Xiongwen.

Former German Minister of Justice lectures at Fudan
On May 20th, Former Minister of Justice of Germany Ms Gmelin lectured at School of Economics of Fudan University. Prof. Dr. Herta Däubler-Gmelin served as Justice Minister in Gerhard Schröder's first cabinet from 1998 to 2002. She studied history, economy, law and political science in Tübingen and Berlin. Before the lecture, Vice Secretary Prof. LIU Jianzhong cordially received her. Prof. Ding Chun, Director of Centre for European Studies and Deputy Director Xin Qiang from Foreign Affairs Office attended the meeting.

Visit by Vice Chancellor of Macquarie University
On May 25th, Prof. Steven Schwartz, Vice Chancellor of University of Macquarie, led a delegation including Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development and Ext. Relations), Director of International Higher Degree Research, Coordinator of International Research Relations to visit Fudan University. Fudan President Yang Yuliang welcomed the delegation. The two parties signed agreement on international student exchange and MoU on Joint PhD Degree between Macquarie University and Fudan University.
Macquarie University is an Australian public teaching and research university located in Sydney. Founded in 1964 by the New South Wales Government, it is the third university to be established in the metropolitan area of Sydney. The University comprises four faculties, enrolling approximately 33,000 students and having 2,221 (full-time equivalent) academic and professional staff, making it the fourth largest University in Sydney.
