Frontier Forum on Plant Molecular Biology 2009
To exchange studies on plant molecular, Fudan School of Life Sciences and the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, jointly hosted Frontier Forum of Plant Molecular Biology 2009: Plant Development and Cell Biology in SuZhou.
Prof. Martin Yanofsky, Prof. Daniel Cosgrove and Prof. Cathie Martin with other fifty international specialists attended the Forum and made presentations. Topics were focused on frontier of plant development and cell biology while the Forum served as platform for researchers and students to communicate and share. Discussions ranged from gene and hormone control in development, cell division and differentiation, and construction and function of environmental signs on development.

Laboratory of Advanced Materials PI Forum Concluded
In order to enhance interdisciplinary education in advanced material laboratory, a Principal Investigator (PI) Forum was organized at Fudan and the first lecture was given by Prof. Peng Huisheng on Nov. 25, sharing nature nanotechnology study background. Over 30 students from different majors and subject groups attended the talk.
Prof. Peng began the lecture by sharing his overseas experience as a student and proceeded on with his opinion on how to conduct scientific research successfully. The talk was wrapped up with Prof. Peng’s suggestion on dissertation and research paper writing.

International Seminar on “Urbanization and Environmental Issues of China ”
On Nov. 2nd, more than 30 scholars from Japan and China attended the International Seminar on “Urbanization and Environmental Issues of China” held in Guanghua Tower. The participants had in-depth discussion on issues related to environment, economy, society and institution, and covered topics from “Culture Evolution Under City Development”, “Urban and Suburban Environmental Issues Caused by the Population Migration from Rural Areas to Cities” to “History of the City” and “Lifestyle Change and City Environment”.
According to Fudan University Associate Professor Feng Xianliang from History Department, one should not over-simplify the significance of 2010 Shanghai Expo theme “Better City Better Life”, because, as a lesson learned from history, the development of city economy has not necessarily resulted in the enhancement of the general public’s life standard. This idea is supported by Associate Professor Zhang Zhen, who considers the Shanghai Expo an opportunity to change the ideas of city-dwellers. Japanese Scholar Shin Mttramatsu suggests that the changes could be started from small things, from one community, and with the “demonstration effect”, it will eventually influence the whole city.
Director of Research Center of Historical Geography Professor Ren Manzhi, representing Fudan University, signed Cooperation Memorandum with Professor Tachimoto Narifumi, director of Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, which set the framework for future cooperation between the two institutes in the following three years. Fudan University deputy secretary of CPC Committee Chen Limin attended the seminar and delivered a speech.
The seminar marked the first academic event co-held by the two institutes that both expressed interests in hosting more events of this kind in future.

6th International Symposium on Respiratory Diseases Concluded
Hosted by Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University and co-sponsored by Journal of Organ Dysfunction, Asia Pacific Association for Respiratory Care and Shanghai Medical Association, the 6th International Symposium on Respiratory Diseases (ISRD) and the 17th Congress of the Asia Pacific Association for Respiratory Care (APARC) was held in Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center from Nov. 6 to 8.
Nearly 2000 doctors and scholars on Chronic Airway Diseases & Respiratory Critical Care Medicine from home and abroad participated in this symposium and more than 100 world famous scholars gave presentations. Prof. Wang Xiaolin, Vice Chancellor of Fudan University and Prof. Zhu Tongyu, Deputy Dean of Zhongshan Hospital attended the opening ceremony and gave remarks.
The ISRD was growing from 300 participates in 2003 to 1600 in 2008 and becomes an annual event alternating between international and Chinese respiratory societies. The major focus of ISRD 2009 was Respiratory Clinical Science, Clinical Management of COPD, Current Therapies for Lung Cancer, Laboratory Diagnosis and Researches in Respiratory Tract Infections, Advanced therapies for ARDS, and Current Therapies for Lung Diseases and Physiologies. The symposium was an important platform for exchange of information, experiences and innovations between basic researchers and clinicians, academia and industry, international and national scientists, and pulmonologists and other doctors.

International Symposium on “China’s diplomacy at the 60th Anniversary of PRC"
China's diplomacy Center of International Research Center of Fudan University and Pyle Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies of National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) of the United States jointly held an international symposium on “China’s Diplomacy at the 60th Anniversary of PRC" during October 20 to 22. The meeting received support from the Ford Foundation and the Bradley Foundation, and attracted more than 20 scholars to attend. The participants from U.S., China (Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Macau) had heated discussion on "recent trends and the rise of the driving force," "domestic economic priorities," "security policy", "Outlook: a potential problem" and other topics.
The newly appointed U.S. ambassador to China JON HUNTSMAN issued a message by video. In the statement, he remarked that China's foreign policy has three trends. First, China is still employing "keeping a low profile" spirit to handle world affairs, emphasizing maintenance of peaceful relations with neighboring countries and regions and policy on non-interference in internal affairs. Second, as to Sino-US relations, mutual respect, mutual understanding and establishment of a more dynamic and comprehensive cooperative relationship is important. Both sides begin to cooperate to solve general issues as energy security and climate change. Third, another aspect of China's foreign policy is “to do something” as reflected in China's active participation in regional and global issues. China and the U.S. should jointly safeguard world peace and prosperity by “help each other and learn from each other”.
The symposium was concluded with agreement that China's foreign policy is a worthwhile topic for further exploration.

Obama upbeat about Sino-U.S. ties, pins hope on younger generation
Fudan President Presided over Obama’s Town Hall Talk
SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday the U.S.-China cooperation enables both countries to be more prosperous and more secure and that young people are the best ambassadors.
Obama had a dialogue with 500-strong Chinese college students Monday afternoon in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, a highlighted activity in the first stop of his four-day maiden trip to China since taking office in January.
He covered a wide range of topics, notably the outlook of Sino-U.S. cooperation and youth exchanges between the two countries, while delivering opening remarks and answering questions from the students and Chinese Internet users.
POSITIVE SINO-U.S. TIES
Obama said China is a nation that encompasses both a rich history and a belief in the promises of the future and that the same can be said of the relationship between the two countries. The Shanghai Communiqué signed 37 years ago opened the door to a new chapter of engagement between the governments and the people of the two countries, he said.
"Today we have a positive, constructive and comprehensive relationship that opens the door to partnership on the key global issues of our time: economic recovery, development of clean energy, stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and the surge of climate change, and the promotion of peace and security in Asia and around the globe," Obama said.
"We have seen what is possible when we build on our mutual interests and engage on the basis of mutual respect."
The success of that engagement depends on understanding, on sustaining an open dialogue and learning about one another and from one another, he said.
"Our relationship has not been without disagreement and difficulties. But the notion that we must be adversaries is not predestined," Obama said, noting that the two countries "share much in common" while they are "different in certain ways."
He said one country's success need not come at the expense of another.
"That is why the United States insists we do not seek to contain China's rise; on the contrary, we welcome China as a strong and prosperous and successful member of the community of nations, a China that draws on the rights, strengths and creativity of individual Chinese like you," Obama said to the students.
YOUNG PEOPLE BEST AMBASSADORS
Obama announced in his speech that the United States would further expand its youth exchanges with China by increasing the number of students studying in China to 100,000.
"These exchanges mark a clear commitment to build ties among our people, as surely as you will help us determine the destiny of the 21st century," he said.
He said young people in China and U.S. are the best ambassadors and that cooperation between the countries should go beyond the governments.
"I believe strongly that cooperation must grow beyond our government. It must be rooted in our people, in the studies we share, in the business we do, in the knowledge that we gain, and even in the sports we play, and these bridges must be built by men and women just like you, and your counterparts in America," Obama said.
"I am absolutely confident that America has no better ambassadors to offer than our young people, for they just like you are filled with talent, energy and optimism about the history that is yet to be written.
"So let this be the next step in the steady pursuit of cooperation between our two nations and the world," Obama said.
"If there is one thing we can take from today's dialogue, I hope that it is a commitment to continue this dialogue going forward," Obama said in his speech.
CLIMATE CHANGE COOPERATION
Obama said while answering a question of a student that it is vital for the U.S. and China to strengthen cooperation in dealing with the global challenge of climate change.
"There are very few global challenges that can be solved unless China and the United States agree," he said.
As the world's two largest greenhouse gas emitters, the United States and China should assume the responsibility to curb greenhouse gas emissions, he said.
"Unless both of our countries are willing to take critical steps in dealing with this issue, we will not be able to resolve it," Obama said.
Obama called on world leaders to strike a deal at the Copenhagen conference in December during which they would possibly make differentiated commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
China should not take the same obligations as the United States since it has a much larger population fighting poverty, Obama said.
ADHERENCE TO ONE-CHINA POLICY
When asked by a netizen from Taiwan on the U.S. stance on Taiwan issues, Obama said his administration would continue to fully support the one-China policy and would be very pleased to see the improving cross-Strait relationship.
"I have been clear in the past the United States supports a one-China policy. We do not want to change that policy or approach...I am very pleased with the reduction of tensions and improvement of the cross-Strait relations," he said.
Obama noted it was his "deep desire and hope" that he would continue to see great improvement between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan in resolving issues.
Economic and commercial ties were helping to lower a lot of tensions, he said.
KEY TALKS IN CAPITAL
Obama said economic recovery, climate change and stopping the spread of nuclear weapons would be the main topics in his upcoming talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao in the capital Beijing. The development of clean energy and the promotion of peace and security in Asia would also on the list of their talks, he said.
After meeting with officials and students in Shanghai, Obama touched down in Beijing later Monday afternoon to continue his China tour. He was greeted at the airport by Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping.
U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Susan Rice and National Security Advisor James Jones also arrived in Beijing on Monday afternoon.
During his stay in Beijing, Obama is to exchange views with Chinese leaders on bilateral relations and major international and regional issues of common concern, and visit the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, two of China's most cherished heritage sites.
China is one leg of Obama's Asian tour, following his visit to Japan and Singapore. He is set to leave Beijing for the Republic of Korea Wednesday afternoon.

The First Finland Day Held in Fudan
On Nov 13, the first Finland Day was successfully launched by the Nordic Centre Fudan University. Ms. Henna Virkkunen, Minister of Education and Science, visited Fudan and met with President Yang Yuliang. Both parties exchanged their opinions on education reform in China and in Finland. Mr. Mikko Puustinen, Deputy Commissioner General of Finland at Shanghai EXPO and Mr. Tero Kosonen, Chairman of Finnish Business Council in Shanghai, attended the meeting and introduced Finnish participation in Shanghai EXPO and collaboration with Chinese partners.
Finnish universities including University of Aslto, University of Cross Border and Universtity of Oulu and 14 companies including Nokia were present on Finland Day and offered students the opportunities to consult on studying in Finland and working in Finnish companies at Shanghai.

International Calligraphy Exhibition on the Wisdom of Confucian, Taoism and Buddism Opens
On Nov. 21st, the International Calligraphy Exhibition on the Wisdom of Confusion, Taoism and Buddism opened in Shanghai Luxun Memorial Museum. During the opening day, calligraphers and scholars gathered to philosophize “What makes a Calligraphy Master”.
Chinese traditional culture constitutes of three schools of thoughts including Confucian, Taoism and Buddism, which have built the splendid culture of China, and nurtured the unique arts of calligraphy. More than a hundred pieces of work by ten calligraphers and scholars on classics and words of wisdom were on exhibition. The participants came from Japan, South Korea, Canada, America and Thailand, as well as from Chinese Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai, Zhe Jiang Province, Jiangsu Province, Shandong Province, Jilin Province, Hebei Province, Fujian Province and Anwei Province. They were presidents and vice presidents of different calligraphy associations, and even eminent monks, presenting the general public with a feast of eyes. The Calligraphy exhibition was held in Luxun Memorial Museum from Nov. 21st to Nov. 23rd, and in Qingpu Qushui Park from Nov. 24th to Nov 26th.
The exhibition was held by Fudan University, Shanghai Calligrapher Association, Xinwen Evening News, Shanghai Qingpu District Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, Shanghai Luxun Memorial Museum, Japan Hyogo Calligrapher Association and Fudan University Research Center on Chinese Calligraphy and Shigu Characters, and was supported by Fudan University Calligraphy and Arts Association, Shanghai Caifeng Magazine and American China Calligraphy Association.

School of Journalism Celebrated its 80th Anniversary
Fudan University's School of Journalism, known as "the cradle of journalists," celebrated its 80th anniversary of founding on October 31. More than 1,500 domestic and overseas alumni, college deans and media professionals came to Fudan campus to mark the milestone.
Founded in 1929, the school has the longest history in journalism education in China and has nurtured tens of thousands of professionals, including media elites. Following the motto of "a good learner and keen practitioner," the school has achieved many "firsts" in China and enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad. In June 1988, the journalism department upgraded into the country's first School of Journalism. It was also the first to introduce public relations subjects into domestic education and published the first communication textbook. Song Chao, deputy minister of publicity department of CPC Shanghai and dean of the school, said "The school will keep up its innovation with an international perspective to reflect the features of the university, the country and the era." The school has now established four departments: Journalism, Broadcasting and Television, Communication, and Advertising and offers a variety of masters and doctoral programs covering various fields.
"The school has nurtured a great deal of excellent media professionals for the country and especially for the city," said Wang Zhongwei, minister of publicity department of the Communist Party of China Shanghai Committee. Besides praise, Wang also set higher expectations and requirements during the occasion by asking the prestigious department to improve education quality and train more professionals.
After the ceremony, the school launched a media education forum involving nearly 100 deans and faculty members from world-renowned media schools, including University of Missouri's School of Journalism and University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies. They discussed challenges to the media, reform and re-organization of journalism schools in today's fast changing environment.

Prof. Peng Xizhe Appointed Member of SC ESSP
Recently Prof. Peng Xizhe, Dean of School of Social Development and Public Policy, Fudan University, was appointed by International Council for Science (ICSU) as Member of the Scientific Committee (SC) of Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP). The three-year membership will take effect from Jan 1, 2010. Before this new appointment, Prof. Peng was Member of SC of International Human Dimensions Program on Global Environmental Change (IHDP).
ESSP is a partnership for the integrated study of the Earth System and its four Joint Projects on issues of global sustainability are energy and the carbon cycle (GCP), water resources (GWSP), food security (GECAFS) and human health (GEC&HH). SC is the governing body of the ESSP and is now composed of 29 members.
In 2001 at the first Global Change Open Science Conference in Amsterdam the 1400 participants from more than 100 countries signed the Amsterdam Declaration on Global Change. The declaration called for strengthening the cooperation amongst the global environmental research programs, for greater integration across disciplines, environment and development issues and the natural and social sciences. In response to the declaration, the four international global environmental change research programs: DIVERSITAS (an integrated program of biodiversity science), IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Program), IHDP (International Human Dimensions Program on Global Environmental Change), and WCRP (World Climate Research Program) joined together to form ESSP. The ESSP brings together researchers from diverse fields, and from across the globe, to undertake an integrated study of the Earth System.

Visit by Victoria University of Wellington President
On Nov. 9, a delegation led by President of Victoria University of Wellington Prof. Pat Walsh visited Fudan University. Chancellor of Fudan University, Prof. Qin Shaode, received the guests and attended the following signing ceremony for cooperation with Contemporary China Research Center in New Zealand.
Prof. Qin remarked to the guests that researches in both natural science and social sciences are very important to the university and wished that The Contemporary China Research Center would serve as a bridge to enhance the communication and cooperation between two universities.
At the end of the meeting, Prof. Deng Zhenglai conferred on Prof. Huang Xiaoming, Director of Contemporary China Research Center in New Zealand, fellowship of Fudan Contemporary China Research Center. Prof. Huang Xiaoming also on the occasion conferred on Prof. Deng Zhenglai, Dean of Fudan Contemporary China Research Center fellowship of Contemporary China Research Center in New Zealand.

UN Foundation Leaders’ Dialogue with Fudan Students
Board Members of United Nations Foundation visited Fudan on October 30 and talked to 300 Fudan Students focusing on “United Nations and Global Challenge”.
UN Foundation President Timothy E. Wirth took the transformation of economic modes as the most important topic during the dialogue. He said, “green”, “low-carbon” and “sustainable development” were quoted most frequently in the conferences held in China. But to realize it means to change the present economic and consuming modes. Therefore the transformation of development mode is one of the biggest global challenges. As for the young students, President Wirth remarked that first young people shall have a vision, then persist in it until success.
Fudan President Yang Yuliang attended the dialogue and made a welcome speech. The visitors included Mr. Ted Turner, founder of CNN (Cable New Network) and United Nations Foundation; Mr. Timothy E. Wirth, President of United Nations Foundation and Better World Fund; Professor Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank of Bangladesh and winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize; Professor Yuan Ming, Director, Institute of International Relations, Peking University; and Professor Emma Rothschild, Director of the Centre for History and Economics at King’s College, University of Cambridge and Harvard University, and Professor of History at Harvard University. Prof. Ni Shixiong from Fudan School of International Relations and Public Affairs participated in the dialogue.

Pakistan Study Centre Set up at Fudan
On 26 October 2009, the inauguration ceremony of Pakistan Study Centre and the speech by Mr. Masood Khan, Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, was held at Fudan University. The Centre will serve as a platform for enhancing academic and educational ties and facilitating cooperative links between Fudan University and Universities and educational institutions in Pakistan in all disciplines especially including international relations and strategic studies, economics, history, environmental studies, business and management studies. The Centre will work on research studies and publications, organize seminars, and facilitate student exchange programmes and cultural events.
Prof. Shen Dingli, the Executive Dean of Institute of International Studies, chaired the ceremony and the speech. Prof. Wang Weiping, Vice President of Fudan University addressed the welcome remarks. Prof. Wang expressed the sincere congratulation on the inauguration of Pakistan Studies Center and extended his deep gratitude to the Pakistan Government and Ambassador Khan for their efforts and supports for the foundation of the Pakistan Study Centre. He also said that Fudan University will provide facilities both in terms of personnel, space, and equipments for the Centre. Prof. Wang and Ambassador Khan jointly unveiled the Plaque - written in Chinese, English and Urdu - of Pakistan Study Centre.
Subsequently, Ambassador Khan made a speech on “Pakistan-China Relations: a factor of peace and stability in the region and beyond”. He first looked back the long history of Pakistan-China relations and spoke highly of the achievements China has made in the past thirty years. He then talked about three aspects of Pakistan-China cooperation, including strategic partnership, economic exchange and people-to-people contacts. He finally analyzed the contributions that both Pakistan and China have made to the regional peace and stability. Ambassador Khan also expressed his thanks for the support of Fudan University and best wishes to the Pakistan Study Centre.
Around 100 participants, including guests from Consulate General and Naval Mission of Pakistan in Shanghai, delegates from Shanghai academia and media, and faculty and students from Fudan University are invited to and attended the ceremony and the speech.

Shanghai History Research Center Established
Sponsored by Mr. Zhu Yumin, "Shanghai History Research Center" was established in Department of History on October 26 after Mr. Zhu signed a donation agreement for five million with Fudan President Yang Yuliang.
Mr. Zhu, who immigrated to U.S. A. long ago, expressed his strong interest in Shanghai's history and culture and wished that "Shanghai History Research Center" could contribute to the history studies and serve as a bridge between Fudan University and the University of Southern California.
Born in Shanghai, Mr. Zhu Yumin currently lives in Los Angeles and is California gaming industry investor and Crystal Park Casino & Hotel's partner. As Chairman of U.S. Association of Shanghai, Mr. Zhu attaches great importance to charity and education.

President Hu Jintao’s Talk With Exchange Students at Fudan High School
On Nov.13, President Hu Jintao of China visited Nangyang Girl’s High School of Singapore and talked with its students who were currently studying at High School Affiliated to Fudan University via video.
President Hu asked the students about their stay and study in Shanghai and expressed hope that they will cherish this learning opportunity, make more friends, know more about Chinese culture in Shanghai and contribute to enhancing friendship between China and Singapore.
In 2004, Nanyang Girls’ High School established partnership with Fudan High School and various forms of academic exchanges and cooperation for teachers and students followed.

Fudan Won Awards at 11th “Challenge Cup”
On Nov. 2, the results of the 11th "Challenge Cup" Competition --- a national university students’ extracurricular science-tech competition was announced. Fudan ranked sixth in the total score among all the colleges and universities in this contest and was honored the Cup of Excellence and the award of Excellent Organizer at the same time.
The delegation of Fudan University reaped one Grand prize, one First Prize, three Second Prizes and one Third Prize in this year’s Challenge Cup. The grand prize was presented to Fudan students from School of Life Sciences led by Chen Wentao and Lu zhisheng. The First Prize was awarded to Li Yongli from School of Economics. Three Second Prizes were respectively presented to Wang Haoxuan and Hu Ke from Department of Chemistry, Guo Binjian and Zhang Tianle from Software School and Li Shuo from School of Law. Hong Jiaxu from EENT Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University won the Third Prize.
This year’s “Challenge Cup” was hosted by Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. 1,106 projects from 432 mainland universities and 53 projects from Hong Kong and Macao entered in this year’s final. Prize winners were selected by the judging committee. There were 29 Grand Prizes, 100 First Prizes, 283 Second Prizes, and 747 Third Prizes. Tsinghua University and BUAA netted the Challenge Cup.
In Shanghai World Expo Themed Competition which was held at the same time, a project submitted by Zeng Xiangyu from School of Information won the Third Prize. The following “Chanllege Cup” will be hosted by Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi’an in two years.
