School of Management Launched Alumni Office at NYC

 

 

 

School of management, Fudan University, launched its alumni office at New York City on October 7th, as part of its development plan to consolidate and extend alumni network. This office is the first of representative office at overseas.

 

Prof. Xiongwen Lu, Dean of School of management, and Prof. Yihong Yu, Associate Dean, attended the opening ceremony and EMBA New York Management Forum which were held in Manhattan, joined by many alumni, representatives from Chinese Consulate-General in New York, New York Chinese Businessmen’s Association as well as guests from other Chinese organizations in the city.

 

The establishment of alumni representative office has been widely covered by mainstream Chinese media such as Xinhua News Agency, CCTV, China Radio International, China Business Network, China Daily, Ta Kung Pao, and Sing Tao Newspaper. Dean Lu accepted exclusive interviews by Xinhua News Agency, China Daily, and Sing Tao Newspaper, sharing his views on Sino-US economic ties, one business school’s mission and the path of internationalization.

 

Based on its would-be successful operation, the School of Management is going to set up more offices throughout the world as a way to support its development on the path of internationalization. Alumni and overseas friends will be able to learn more about the School of Management through the office.

SYMPOSIUM

Asian Symposium on Advanced Materials Held at Fudan

 

 

 

The 2nd Asian Symposium on Advanced Materials (ASAM-2) was held on October 11 at Fudan University, organized by Department of Materials Science & Advanced Materials Laboratory, Fudan University and Sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation of China and China Materials Research Society. Dr. Limin Wu, Professor and Head of Department of Materials Science, and Dr. Dongyuan Zhao, Academician and Director of Advanced Materials Laboratory at Fudan University, co-chaired the symposium. Prof. Xiaoman Chen, Fudan Vice president attended the opening ceremony.

 

Almost 200 scholars from more than 12 countries and regions attended the Symposium and discussed the chemistry of functional materials including Synthesis and characterization of Advanced Functional Materials (Organic, inorganic and hybrid), Properties and applications of Advanced Functional Materials and Nanotechnology for Advanced Functional Materials. President of International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Prof. Jung-Il Jin from Korea University, Vice President of the Chemical Society of Japan, Prof. Tomiki Ikeda from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Prof. Takuzo Aida from Tokyo University, and Prof. Lei Jiang from Institute of Chemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences made presentations on the occasion. The Symposium also provided opportunity for discussion and the communication for Asian universities, research institutes and scholars.

International Forum on Premium Healthcare Concluded

 

 

 

On Oct 16, Premium Healthcare in Shanghai--The 2nd International Forum, hosted by Huashan Worldwide Medical Center (HWMC) and Shanghai Premium Healthcare Association, was held in Grand Hyatt.

 

A speech titled “Premium Healthcare Platform—Shanghai Premium Healthcare Association today and tomorrow” was given by Dr. GU Jingwen, Director of HWMC. She remarked that the core provider of premium healthcare should be equipped with comprehensive service capabilities, emergency response, collaboration among hospital, insurance and government, as well as integration with Chinese and Western culture.

Prof. XU Jianguang, Director General of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau, Prof. WANG Weiping, Executive Vice President of Fudan University, Dr. GU Jingwen, Director of HWMC, and Ms WU Fan, Director of Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, attended the forum. Representatives from consulates general of some countries in Shanghai, foreign medical service institutions, international medical insurance companies, delegations from Harvard Medical School, Kettering Medical Center, Kitano Hospital were also at present.

 

HWMC, founded in 1989, is the first joint venture medical facility in China. It is now recommended by many international enterprises, health insurance and assistance companies to their employees and clients. It is also the preferred medical center for consulates general of various countries in Shanghai. HWMC is now recognized as one of the top international medical facilities in China.

Symposium on "Sino-US Relations Since Normalization" Held

Symposium on Sino-US relations since normalization was co-hosted by, American Research Center of Fudan University and American Studies Institution of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on October 6 and 7. This is the 14th Annual Conference of Association of American History Studies and the third time that Fudan host the series of meetings.

 

Seventy delegates from universities and academic institutions of fourteen provinces attended the symposium and presented over 40 conference papers. Among the participants, there were both established Sino-US relations experts and emerging and pioneers and younger-generation of researchers.

The symposium themes covered many aspects of Sino-US relations, such as start of the normalization of Sino-US relations, Sino-US economic relations, military relations, cultural relations, the international pattern of and Sino-US relations, regional security and Sino-US relations, Taiwan issue and Sino-US relations, etc. The participants reviewed the development of Sino-US relation from historical perspectives and analyzed the practical problems of Sino-US relations and U.S. foreign policy from international-relations, political science, linguistics, law and other inter-disciplinary perspectives. This meeting also served as a review of domestic academic research achievements of Sino-US relations.

2009 Sino-US Colorectal Cancer Multidisciplinary Seminar Concluded

 

 

 

2009 Sino-US Colorectal Cancer multidisciplinary Seminar, hosted by Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center and co-hosted by the Committee of Colorectal Cancer (CACA), Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the U.S. and China Oncology, commenced on Oct. 24 in Fudan University and was concluded two days later.

 

The seminar this year has received much attention as well as support from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, which has sent a multidisciplinary group to the seminar, including Prof. Leonard Saltz, prestigious expert in chemotherapy, Prof. Martin R.Weiser, renowned expert in surgery, as well as Prof. Karyn Goodman.

 

During the two-day seminar, more than 200 experts from China and overseas had heated discussions on early diagnosis, surgical treatment, chemotherapy and biological targeting therapy. The seminar is expected to encourage multidisciplinary treatment towards colorectal cancer, to elevate the treatment level in China. Meanwhile, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center explores the cooperation with oversea cancer centers, such as MD Anderson Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, aiming at becoming a world-class cancer center.

The Amphidromia of Asteroid " Gu Chaohao "

 

 

 

 

The Amphidromia of Asteroid " Gu Chaohao " was held at Fudan University, October 20, 2009.  Professor Gu Chaohao is a world-renowned Chinese mathematician and Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is the first Fudan professor who was  honoured in this fashion after Professor Tan Jiazhen, another scientist of Fudan University. Mdm. Yin Yicui, Deputy Party Secretary of Shanghai Municipality was present on the rewarding occasion. Mdm. Yin remarked that Professor Gu Chaohao is a world-renowned scientist. He pursued his studies with preciseness and has made influential achievements in mathematical theories, such as partial differential equitation, classical theories of gauge field and higher-dimensional spatiotemporal solitons theories. He is on the cutting edge of this area and is highly applauded by his international counterparts. Meanwhile, Professor Gu Chaohao is also a renowned educationalist. He was appointed Vice President of Fudan University and was later nominated to serve as President of Chinese University of Science and Technology.

 

On this grand amphidromia, Mr. Lu Chunlin, Party Secretary of Purple Mountain Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences (PMO) conferred the certificate of Asteroid "Gu Chaohao" on Professor Gu. This particular asteroid was found by Xuyu Station of PMO on September 11, 2007. Its international code is Asteroid 171448. This asteroid completes its full cycle of solar precession approximate to 3.47035 years. It was authorized by Minor Planet Center and Committee for Small Body Nomenclature on August 26, 2009 to be named after " Gu Chaohao " to recognize his achievements.

Public Speech by Elaine L. Chao

 

Mdm. Elaine L. Chao, the 24th U. S. Secretary of Labor from 2001-2009, visited Fudan on October 14, 2009 and accepted Honourable Professorship of Fudan University. Mdm. Chao served the longest terms as Secretary of Labor since World War II and was the first Asian woman to be appointed in President's cabinet.

Mdm. Chao delivered a speech titled “Chinese Heart, American Mind, World Harmony” to 600 Fudan audience and shared her family story with the audience. With her own experience, she illustrated that as a Chinese descent, the traditional Chinese culture and views on value are of great importance in self-development. She encouraged students learning more about other countries and cultures, enhancing communications with people from various nations and promoting mutual understanding. She believed that the world is becoming smaller and more interconnected while “increased communications to facilitate greater understanding between different peoples is key to world harmony”.

During her terms, the U.S. Department of Labor achieved record results in improving health, safety, wages, and retirement security of America's workforce and fostered exchanges and interactions with China. Prior to this position, Mdm. Chao served as director on the board of various Fortune 500 companies and was Vice President of Syndications at Bank of America and Citicorp.  She holds Masters Degree in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School and Bachelor Degree in Economics from Mount Holyoke College.

2009 Austrian Days at Fudan

 

 

 

 

Dr. Johannes Hahn, Austrian Federal Minister for Science and Research, visited Fudan on September 26 and attended the opening ceremony of the Exhibition of Haydn and Vienna Classics jointly hosted by Fudan University, Eurasia Pacific Uninet and Austrian Center at Fudan. This event is one of many activities going on during Austrian Days at Fudan, including a joint concert by Mozarteum University Salzburg and the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. Various other activities were organized, including lectures, wine-tasting party and etc. 

 

Joseph Haydn, as a great Austrian musician, not only influenced Austria and Europe, but also the whole world. He was one of the most prominent composers of the classical period, created 104 symphonies along his life and regarded as "Father of the Symphony" or "Father of the String Quartet." In order to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Haydn's death, the exhibition was hosted to present pictures and masterpieces of Haydn as well as other important Austrian Musicians like Mozart and Beethoven.

Fudan-Groningen Week Held

 

 

 

Fudan-Groningen Week organized by Dutch Studies Centre at Fudan and co-hosted by University of Groningen was held from October 19 to 23, 2009.

 

In the afternoon of Oct. 20, Executive President Wang Weiping received President Sibrand Poppema of University of Groningen on campus and the two jointly opened the photo exhibition of Fudan Groningen Exchanges.

 

During the week, professors from University of Groningen gave lectures on various areas from physics, economics, molecular science to Sino-Dutch Relations. On Oct 22, a speech competition centering the Netherlands was held. Ten candidates for the final round made the speeches from various perspectives to look at Dutch society, culture, art and economy. The winner was awarded a funded a research tour offered by University of Groningen.

 

On Oct 23 at the closing party, faculty and students were invited to taste Dutch foods and appreciate Dutch music, which reflected the traditional culture of the Netherlands.

The opening ceremony of Interlaced Cultural History Studio held

 

 

The opening ceremony of Interlaced Cultural History Studio was held at Literature and History Research Institute on October 19, 2009. Prof. Rui Chuanming, visiting scholar and senior researcher of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences presided over the ceremony. Prof. Ge Zhaoguang, Dean of Cultural and Historical Research InstituteProf. Zhang Qing, Director of History Department, and Prof. Yang Zhigang, Director of Liberal Arts Research Division, delivered speeches respectively. After the opening ceremony, Prof. Rong Xinjiang of Peking University introduced his latest research results while Prof. Ma Xiaohe of Harvard-Yenching Institute gave an academic report on "From the Dead Sea Scrolls to the Dunhuang".

 

From the beginning, Cultural and Historical Research Institute focuses on research in five directions, i.e. “viewing China from the periphery”, “critical understanding of the international Chinese studies”, “interlaced cultural history”, “comprehensive study on religious thoughts and arts”, “China's extra-territorial possession and the text image data”. The institution is designed to create an open research platform for collective theme studies and promote cooperation between internal and external counterparts. On the one hand, new sources of teaching and research activities can be introduced while on the other hand, a concerted effort can be formed to strengthen the development of disciplines. The establishment of the studio is expected to guarantee the five-direction researches.

 

Interlaced Cultural History Studio is the first studio set up in Cultural and Historical Research Institute as the result of close cooperation between History Department and the institution with strong support from the University.

Assessment Meeting of the Joint Program “Project Management” Held

 

 

 

Chaired by Peking Union Medical College Hospital and sponsored by China Medical Board (CMB), Assessment Meeting of the joint program “Project Management” applied by 13 medical colleges was held on Oct.16 and 17 at Fudan University.

 

Since 1980s, CMB has provided 13 medical colleges including those in comprehensive universities with a great amount of financial support in medical education, scientific research and professional training. These 13 higher education institutions are Peking University, Sichuan University, Zhongshan University, Zhejiang University and Fudan University, among the others. In terms of CMB’s contributions to Chinese medical business, the former President of CMB, Prof. Schwarz was granted National Friendship Award. Other representatives from Peking University, Zhongshan University, Sichuan University, Ningxia Medical University, Medical School of Jiujiang University and Tibet University delivered presentations at the meeting.

 

Prof. Ma Jingyu from Peking Union Medical College and Prof. Dong Zhe from Peking University presided over the meeting and gave a program review report on the joint projects. Prof. Chen Jie from Fudan School of Public Health exchanged her view on winning the financial support twice from CMB on the topic of “Sanitation Technology Evaluation”. By using her experience as an instance, she also made a conclusion on the key of the CMB project management. Professor Wang Qing from Shang Medical College of Fudan University reviewed the achievements on the project of Medical Education Research Center renovation, of which the follow-up effect and influence on medical institute is profound and lasting. Director of Medical Center Office and Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Office, Dr. Zhu Chouwen, also shared his views on project management.

Academician Zhao Dongyuan Won 2008 TWAS-Chemistry Prize

 

On the 20th General Academician Assembly of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the 11th TWAS Academic Meeting held from October 20 to October 24, Academician Zhao Dongyuan of Fudan University was awarded 2008 TWAS Chemistry Prize for his great contribution to the research on synthesis of Mesoporous Materials. Academician Zhao is the fourth Chinese chemist awarded with this prize.

 

Academician Bai Chunli, Executive Dean of China Science Academy, wrote a letter of congratulation to forward his great congratulations and high respects.

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world -- until 2004 named Third World Academy of Sciences -- is a merit-based science academy uniting more than 800 scientists from some 90 countries. Its principal aim is to promote scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development in the South (see North-South divide). TWAS was founded in 1983 under the leadership of the late Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam of Pakistan by a group of distinguished scientists who were determined to do something about the dismal state of scientific research in developing countries. Its headquarters are located in Trieste, Italy. TWAS Award has established Mathematics Prize, Physics Prize, Chemistry Prize, Biology Prize, Medical Science Prize, TWNSO Agriculture Prize and Technology Prize to encourage the great achievements of scientists and scholars in developing countries.

Two Fudan Foreign Faculty Members Won 2009 Shanghai Magnolia Gold Award

 

 

 

 

On Sep 29, the presentation ceremony of Shanghai Magnolia Gold Award was held in Shanghai People’s Mansion. Two Fudan foreign faculty members from EENT hospital, Prof. Jack Jiang and Prof. Daoyi Yu won this award and the former attended the ceremony and was present commemorate medal and certificate by Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng.

 

Prof. Jiang is tenured professor at Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Department of Surgery at University of Wisconsin, Madison. His research focuses on the vibratory properties of the vocal folds via studies of excised larynges, biomechanical modeling, aerodynamics, and analysis of laryngeal microstructure. Prof. Yu is the head of Physiology and Pharmacology of Centre for Ophthalmology and Visual Science, University of Western Australia. His major research interest is glaucoma, physiology and pharmacology. Both Prof. Jiang and Prof. Yu have ever won the Shanghai Magnolia Silver Award.

 

Shanghai Municipality introduced Shanghai Magnolia Award which is named after Shanghai’s official flower in 1989 to express appreciation to foreigners who live in Shanghai and contribute significantly to the city’s economic performance, international relations, business environment, management standards and community development.

Visit by President of Erasmus University Holland

 

On the afternoon of October 13, Professor Qin Shaode, Director of Fudan University Council met with the delegation from Erasmus University (EUR) of Holland headed by President steven Lamberts. Professor Lamberts introduced the subject of his large delegation: “Bring China More Closer to EUR” and expressed his willingness to deepen the bilateral cooperation on the current basis.

According to the bilateral exchange and cooperation agreement, the Medical College of Erasmus University offers scholarship to Fudan students in the field of Clinical Epidemiology and so far, eight students have already been enrolled. Both Erasmus and Fudan leaders agree to further the bilateral cooperation to the field of law, history, and public administration followed the cooperation in medical science.

President Yang Yuliang Participates the 4th Sino-German University Presidents’ Meeting

 

From 0ct. 5 to 7, the 4th Sino-German University Presidents’ Meeting was held in university of Tuebingen. Presidents and leaders from 20 universities including Peiking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Aachen Uniersity, Berlin Freedom University, Humbolt University, Munich University and Fudan University participated in the meeting and had deep discussions upon the cooperation and development prospect in teaching and scientific research between Chinese and German higher education institutions. At the same time, Sino-German University President Forum was held to enhance the communications and practical cooperations between two countries.

 

Representatives regard the meeting as an efficient communication mechanism to exchange views on problems that occurred in Sino-German education strategy and long term cooperation plan. Presidents discussed the procedures and standard for adding new co-members and decided to change the meeting from once a year into biennial. Officer from Education department of Chinese Embassy in Germany suggested the participating colleges to conduct practical cooperations in promoting scientific research, developing professional courses, realizing mutual recognition of credits and simplifying the procedure of exchange studies.

 

Fudan University and University of Tuebingen signed Cooperation Memoradum during the session.

Fudan-WUSL EMBA Remains No. 1 in Mainland China

 

World ranking of EMBA is released byFinancial Times》(UKon Oct. 19, 2009, Washington University in St. Louis-Fudan University EMBA program ranks No.1 in the Mainland of China for the fourth successive year. Average annual salary of alumni, 246,890 US dollars, ranks No.4 in the world, which left its competitors in mainland, China, far behind. This executive MBA program is a successful cooperation between top universities in China and in the U.S., which has been in the top tier ever since it was established.

 

Prof. Lu Xiongwen, Dean of School of Management in Fudan University remarked that WUSL-Fudan EMBA program was one of the first EMBA programs in China while Fudan School of Management is constantly learning from the world’s top business schools. The School now aims to enhance cooperation with top business schools, aiming at training excellent managers for the development of China’s economy and more top-end talents with knowledge of “Business in China.”

 

In the past eight years, this objective has been attracting a number of managers who work in China, local or international to the School. There are not only Chinese senior managers in this program, but also managers from other countries who are currently working in China. Their needs have been met by a diversity of the School’s programs.
