Fudan Law School Celebrates 80th Anniversary

On September 26, 2009, Fudan Law School held a series of activities to celebrate its 80th anniversary of the establishment. The Law School, founded in 1929, has experienced ups and downs and even a 23-year long interruption because of various political and historical reasons in its 80-year history along with the development of China's legal education. With the efforts of generations of Fudanians, the Law School sticks to Fudan’s tradition of "free and independent" spirit, working hard to enhance its own development and contributing to national self-reliance and prosperity. In November 2000, the Law School underwent a significant reform which separated the faculties of Law with International Economic Law, International Policy and Sociology, and established a Law School, taking the sole direction of the legal profession. The renowned Professor Li Changdao was appointed as its first Dean. Ever since then the Law School School develops toward a more professional, academic-oriented direction. In 2008, the School moved to new Jiangwan campus.

Lots of professional talents were cultivated at the School. Prof. Mei Ruao, Justice of Far East International Military Tribunal, fought in the Tokyo trial and punished Japanese war criminals. Mr. Wang Chonghui, regarded as “the first person in law” in the period of Republic of China, developed a more comprehensive legal education system and compiled a large number of reference books while he taught at Fudan University. Among thousands of Law School graduates, Professor Zhang Zhirang, who bravely defended seven patriots in spite of great pressure, was appointed the first Chief Justice after the founding of People’s Republic of China. With the great success of these predecessors, Fudan Law School will keep developing towards a world-class academic institute.
