The Spring Festival Gala Evening by Fudan Vancouver Alumni Association

 

 

 

 

Fudan University Alumni Association of Vancouver and Peking University Alumni Association of Vancouver jointly hosted a Spring Festival Gala Evening on February 15, 2009. More than one hundred Alumni of these two universities joined this gathering. Counselor Xue Yafei from the Education Office of the Consulate General of PRC in Vancouver, and Consul Wang Li were invited to attend. The alumni were happy to see each other on this occasion.

Fudan University Alumni Association of Vancouver (FUAAV) was established in 2005. It now has grown into a 120-member organization. During this Gala Evening, Mr. Yuan Yongping, the Vice President of FUAAV delivered a speech, tracing back campus life at Fudan. Mr. Yuan also extended gratitude to the old university, which has nurtured them and has made influence on their life. He wished Fudan a speedy development to become a world-class university. Meanwhile, Mr. Yuan congratulated Academician Professor Yang Yuliang on his new post as President of Fudan University, while he was very much grateful for the contributions made by Professor Wang Shenghong, former President of Fudan.

Fudan Autonomous Interview and Admission

  

 

 

 

 

Fudan autonomous interview and admission for Class 2009 was held. Shanghai candidates were interviewed at Fudan University on February 11 and 12 while Zhejiang candidates were interviewed in Hangzhou on 14 and 15.

According to “The plan of Fudan autonomous selection and admission reform of 2009” issued in December 2008, more than 1,000 Shanghai candidates and 200 Zhejiang candidates will be admitted. They submitted applications to Fudan Admissions Office, including a personal statement, high school transcripts, two letters of recommendation as well as other types of certificates or works which could prove the candidates’ ability.

Candidates were divided into groups and were interviewed. Interview process for each group of candidates was: explanation of relevant policies; interview by 5 experts respectively; and discussion with senior professors. The interview process takes about three hours.

Based on the results of interview, 500 Shanghai candidates were admitted and 100 Zhejiang candidates were selected for pre-admission.

This is the fourth year that Fudan took the lead in experimenting autonomous admission. 252 professors including Chinese Academicians were invited to interview the candidates. More than 70 university students volunteered to provide services for the interview.

Academician Tang Zhaoyou Wins 2008 Wu Jieping Medical Award

 

 

 

The ceremony for 2008 Wu Jieping Medical Award was held in People’s Great Hall in Beijing on January 9, 2009. Prof. Tang Zhaoyou, Chinese Academician of Engineering, Director of Liver Cancer Institute of Fudan University and Professor with Zhongshan Hospital, was the exclusive winner of 2008 Wu Jieping Medical Award and received the prize of RMB 200,000. Mr. Han Qide, Vice chairman of NPC Standing Committee, Chairman of the Evaluation Committee of Wu Jieping Medical Award, presented the medal and certificate to Prof. Tang. Chen Zhu, Minister of Health, Zhong Nanshan, President of Chinese Medical Association and more than 700 experts from across the country attended the ceremony.

Wu Jieping Medical Award was established by Wu Jieping Medical Foundation and is approved by Ministry of Health and Ministry of Science and Technology to award individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the field of clinical medicine, scientific research, education, public health and health services management. The Evaluation Committee of Wu Jieping Medical Award composes of 15 renowned medical experts.

Wu Jieping Medical Award requires at least three recommendations by academicians, current members of Chinese Medical Association and current deans of School of Medicine at national key universities. Each year 1-2 winners will be rewarded after evaluation process. In 2008, 5 candidates were nominated after primary screening, and Prof. Tang Zhaoyou was unanimously elected to be the final exclusive winner of 2008 Wu Jieping Medical Award.

Fudan Professors Selected Members of 6th Discipline Review Group of the State Council Academic Degree Committee

 

Approved by 26th meeting of the State Council Academic Degree Committee, the 6th Discipline Review Group of the State Council Academic Degree Committee was composed in January 2009. There are 24 professors of Fudan University selected for 20 subjects council groups. Fudan President Yang Yuliang, Professor Gu Yudong and Professor Jin Li are committee members of the State Council Degree Committee.

Professors selected as members to Discipline Review Group of the State Council Academic Degree Committee are: Yu Wujin (philosophy), Yuan Zhigang (Theoretical Economics), Jiang Boke (Applied Economics), Lin Shangli (political science), GU Yumin (Marxism study) Zhu Liyuan (Chinese Language and Literature),Chu Xiaoquan (foreign languages and literature), Huang Dan (Journalism),Wu Jingping (history), Wu Zongmin (mathematic), Jin Xiaofeng (physics, astronomy), Yang  Yuliang (Chemistry), He Heyong (Chemistry), Jin Li (biology), Lu Baorong (biology), Xiong Sidong (basic medicine), Ge Junbo (Clinical Medicine I), Gu Yudong (Clinical Medicine II), Zhou Liang(Clinical Medicine II), Fan Jia (Clinical Medicine II), Jiang Qingwu (Public Health and Preventive Medicine), Wu Gencheng (Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine), Huang Lihua (Management Science and Engineering), Hao Mo (Public Management).

In addition, Prof. Peng Shige, Prof. He Lin and Prof. Chen Kaixian were selected as members of Discipline Review Group in math, biology and pharmacy.

Discipline Review Group is under the leadership of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, engaging in graduate and postgraduate education, research, consulting, audit, guidance, supervision and organization of experts. The current term of appointment is five years. The previous Review Group was established in June 2003. There were 20 professors of Fudan University selected to 18 Discipline Review Group.

Prof. Liu Taifu from Cancer Hospital Awarded Honorary Membership of European Society of Radiology

 

On the annual conference of European Society of Radiology 2008, Prof. Liu Taifu, honorary professor of Cancer Hospital Affiliating to Fudan University, was awarded honorary membership of the Society. He is the first individual in China ever awarded with the title.  

Prof. Liu Taifu was awarded Honorary membership of The American Board of Radiology in 1988 for his great contribution in “introducing the radiation therapy of China to his western colleagues and broadening the vision of Chinese radiation therapists”.

Prof. Liu Taifu is one of the founders of Chinese radiation therapy studies. He was Director of the Radiation Therapy Department of Cancer Hospital, Vice Chairman of Chinese Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology under Chinese Medical Association and Executive Editor-in-Chief of the periodical Chinese Radiation Oncology.

During his 60 years of clinical experience, Prof. Liu Taifu has produced numerous research results. The radiology physics laboratory and radiology biology laboratory that he first established in China set up solid foundation for the future development of the modern radiation therapy in China.

Speaking English, French and Japanese fluently, Prof. Liu Taifu assisted the study-abroad program initiated by French professor J.P. LeBourgeois which nurtured many active and influential Chinese professionals in radiology later on. Prof. Liu Taifu received “Outstanding Contribution Award” in the 7th National Radiation Oncology Conference in 2007.

Prof. Xu Biao Awarded CMB Distinguished Professorship

 

Recently, China Medical Board (CMB) grandly hosted the 1st CMB Distinguished Professorship Award Ceremony in Zhejiang Hotel in Hangzhou. Prof. Xu Biao from School of Public Health, Fudan University, together with other 9 experts of medical science received the award.
 
Established in 1914 in U.S.A, CMB came back to China at the end of 1970s, providing continuous supports to ten key medical schools in China by the ways of program applications. Though strengthening research and education in medical sciences, nursing, public health and other related areas, CMB aims at encouraging subject-building, talent-building, international communications in Medical Schools. Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University (formerly as Shanghai NO.1 Medical College) has got supports for around ten programs up till now, of which the fund has reached 10 billion US dollars. Over the years, CMB maintains its support to all the traditional areas, while paying more attention to Medical Policies, Medical System as well as Research on public health problems, with the aim to enlarge the impacts of medical schools in China’s reform on medical system. At present, seven programs are undergoing at Fudan University.

CMB Distinguished Professorship Award is a new program initiated in 2008, the purpose of which is to award those who have made outstanding achievements in medical area. CMB authorized Institute of International Education, IIE, to name the award winners from 13 institutes, CMB financially supports in China, such as Peking Union Medical College, Peking University Health Science Center, Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University, and Medical College of Zhejiang University. On the awarding ceremony, President of the Selection Committee honorary President Dr. Jordan J. Cohen, and President of CMB Dr. Lincoln Chen introduced the selection criteria and process, making a very high comment on all the 10 award winners.

CMB will continue this award, selecting 10 award winners annually. Each award winner will receive USD 12,000 per year for 5 to 10 years.

Xu Biao, professor in epidemiology from School of Public Health at Fudan University, mainly focuses on research in epidemiology, health service equity and infectious disease control. The project which Prof. Xu Biao leads has been granted funds from WHO, Global Fund (CHINA), National Natural Science Fund, NIH in USA, Swedish Research Council and etc. She is going to work on exploring the society, biology and systematic risk which are related to poverty, in order to improve the health equity and health service equity and to help with the human resource building in public health education.

Prof. Wang Xiangrong Elected Vice Chair of East Asia Affairs of CEC IUCN

 

Doctor Wang Xiangrong, Professor of Fudan Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, was re-elected Standing member of Commission on Education and Communication (CEC), The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) at the conference held by IUCN in Barcelona, Spain in October, 2008. Professor Wang was also elected Vice Chair of CSC East Asia Affairs. His three-year term of office begins in 2009. CEC has 50 members in East Asia and South Asia. Fudan University has officially become its membership union owing to Professor Wang.

IUCN is an international organization dedicated to natural resource conservation.It supports scientific research, manages field projects all over the world and brings governments, non-government organizations, United Nations agencies, companies and local communities together to develop and implement policy, laws and best practice. IUCN was found in October, 1948. In 1990, it chartered as World Conservation Union as the official name while continuing using IUCN as its abbreviation. IUCN's mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.

Israeli Ambassador to China Visits Fudan

 

 

 

 On February 13, 2009, the newly appointed Israeli Ambassador to China Mr. Amos Nadai visited Fudan University and met with President Yang Yuliang. He became the first ambassador visiting Fudan since the beginning of the Spring Semester 2009.

Ambassador Mr. Amos Nadai expressed appreciation for the unreserved help that Shanghai people had rendered to the Jewish refugees during the World WarⅡ. He remarked that Israel was among the earliest countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, and the friendship between the Chinese and Israeli peoples are valuable. President Yang recalled his visit to Israel and the impressive high quality of Israeli universities. Mr. Amos Nadai emphasized that Israel is a safe country. He hopes to enhance the exchange and cooperation between the researchers and scientists of the two countries.
 
Also in the meeting were Israeli Consul General in Shanghai Mr. Jakie Eldan and Professor Chen Yinzhang, Pro-Vice President of Fudan and Director of the Foreign Affairs Office.

New Zealand Consul General in Shanghai Visits Fudan

 

 

 

On February 23, 2009, New Zealand Consul General in Shanghai, Mr. Michael Swain visited Fudan and met with President Yang Yuliang. Coming along with him was Ms. Guergana Guermnoff, New Zealand Education Counselor in China. The meeting was also joined by Professor Chen Yinzhang, Pro-Vice President for International Affairs of Fudan, Dr. Zhu Chouwen, Deputy Director of Fudan Foreign Affairs Office, Dr. Xin Qiang, Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Office and Professor Zhu Yongsheng Dean of the School of International Cultural Exchanges etc.

Mr. Michael Swain expressed his hope to further enhance the exchange and cooperation between the universities in New Zealand and China. The two sides also discussed the successful experience of establishing Confucius Institution at Auckland University in cooperation with Fudan and the New Zealand government’s plan to support the establishment of Contemporary China Studies Center in New Zealand Universities.

Visit by Rector of Friedrich Schiller University Jena

 

 

 

Specially invited by Fudan National Institute of Advanced Social Studies (IAS), Dr. Klaus Dicke, Rector of Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Honorary Chairman of the Coimbra Group and professor in politics, visited Fudan University.

Fudan President Yang Yuliang met with Dr. Klaus Dicke in the Green Hall of Guanghua Towers. Both expressed their intention for further academic exchanges. During the meeting, Dr. Klaus Dicke was conferred Honorary Professor of Fudan University.

Dr. Klause Dicke also signed MOU with Fudan National Institute of Advanced Social Studies after meeting with Prof. Deng Zhenglai, Director of IAS, and his colleagues.

To end his visit, Dr. Klause Dicke delivered a speech on “The Culture of Commemoration in Germany and Friedrich Schiller’s Cosmopolitan Legacy”.
