Swine Foot-and-Mouth Disease Now Meets Its New Adversary

Fudan University , Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Lanzhou Veterinary Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences have now developed a new vaccine under their joint O-Gene Project for Swine Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).

The Appraisal Conference for this research result was held at Fudan University on February 22, 2006 . The Conference was jointly presided over by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education after being authorized respectively by these two national ministries.

Experts unanimously agreed at the conference that this research has been successful and a “New Veterinary Medicine Registration Certificate” has been issued to this project. This means that the vaccine will hopefully be the first FMD gene project vaccine to be launched into manufacture and market.

FMD is an acute, highly contagious infection that affects cloven hoofed animal populations such as cattle, pigs and sheep. The disease may spread over long distances through the movement of infected or contaminated animals, products, objects and people. Hence it is difficult and costly to control.

FMD is now the most significant restraint to international trade in animals and animal products. Consequently, large sums of money have been invested in control and eradication programs , as well as research.

The merit of this newly found vaccine is that there is no need to raise the FMD virus during the vaccine manufacturing process. Thus, there will be no pathogenic factor in this vaccine product ; therefore, it will be a very safe and effective process. This project has been ongoing since 1983 and has been listed in the 2005 High-Tech Projects led by National Development and Reform Commission. The Inner-Mongolia Bio-Pharmaceuticals Factory has now planned to realize the vaccine’s production in its factory.
