Visit by The University of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor
Prof. Alison Richard, Vice-Chancellor of The University of Cambridge, visited Fudan University and met with President Wang Shenghong on April 10.
Upon her first visit to Fudan, Prof. Richard learned general introduction and the Centennial of the university by President Wang. It was wished that experience sharing, stronger ties, and cooperative channels between the two universities would be realized in future. Prof. Richard remarked that given the difference in history and cultural background of the two universities, great universities in the world share common qualities that contribute to the virtues of universities. She did not trust in the rankings as the ultimate criteria of judging the excellence of a university and insisted that not all qualities could be measured in numbers.
Some of her viewpoints in the dialogue with President Wang Shenghong were also reflected in her following public speech entitled Distinction and Distinctiveness: Reflections on Great Universities. Students crowded into the auditorium for the informative and instructive speech and well received it. Prof. Richard wittily ended her speech with a sentimental poem named Farewell to Cambridge by a most famous Chinese poet Xu Zhimo and won quite some knowing smiles from audience.
