Conference on Sino-Swedish Relations in a Historical Perspective
A two-day conference on Sino-Swedish Relations in a Historical Perspective--From 17th Century to Present, co-organized by the Nordic Confucius Institute in Sweden, the International Culture Exchange School of Fudan University and the Nordic Centre, was concluded on Fudan campus on September 12 2006.
The conference boasted of internationally renowned scholars, experts and Swedish sinologists from a wide spectrum of academic backgrounds from economics, literature to history, reviewing the historical relations between China and Sweden . Ruidianguo Jilüe (A brief account of Sweden ), the first comprehensive geographical work on Sweden written in the late Qing dynasty, was displayed to the public by its owner Prof. Xin Deyong of Peking University on the conference.
The Swedish Ambassador to China H.E. Mr. B?rje Ljunggren also attended the conference and gave a speech on Sino-Swedish Relations: The Road Ahead. A photo exhibition on Treasured Moments Between Sweden and China was another interesting highlight during the conference.

2006 Ph.D. Academic Forum for Macromolecule Science
Fudan Ph.D. Academic Forum for Macromolecule Science, co-hosted by Fudan Graduate School , Fudan Graduate Affairs Division, Fudan Ph.D. Academic Forum of Graduate Union and Graduate Association at Fudan School of Macromolecule, was concluded on September 17. Sixteen doctoral students from Fudan , China Science and Technology University , Nanjing University , Tong Ji University and East China Science and Technology University attended the forum.
Professor Jiang Ming, Academician at Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered an opening keynote lecture and shared with the audience his own academic experience from the past fifty years.

Fudan-LSE Dual Degrees in Global Media and Communication Program Kicked off
On 14 September, Yan Shuang, Vice President of Fudan University, and Sarah Worthington, Vice President of LSE, signed the agreement on the joint program of “Dual Degrees in Global Media and Communication”. The admission was also announced globally on the homepages of the two universities at the same time.
The courses of “ Dual Degrees in Global Media and Communication” are offered by Fudan School of Journalism and LSE Department of Media and Communication which aim to produce quality professionals. Applicants can be experienced media professionals who take interest in Chinese society and culture. The first year of the 2 year program will be conducted in LSE for training in theory and practice of international media. The second year will be conducted in Fudan University for an understanding of theory and practice of Chinese media and the Chinese society, culture, economy. The students won’t be granted the dual degrees, namely, Master of Science in International Communication of LSE, and Master of Arts in International Communication of Fudan University, until they complete 4 modules in LSE and degree thesis and 20 credits in Fudan and degree thesis as well.

Inauguration for China ’s 1st Sino-Italian Double Degree in International Management
On September 15, the Inauguration for Double Degree in International Management jointly presented by Bocconi, LUISS and Fudan was held at Fudan School of Management, as the very first of its kind in management promoted by Chinese Ministry of Education. All modules of this two-year program are taught in English, with one year at Fudan and the second year in either Bocconi University or LUISS in Italy . Thirty Chinese students were enrolled as the first class this year.
Italian Minster of Education Mr. Fabio Mussi, President of Bocconi University Prof. Angelo Provasoli, Vice President of LUISS Prof. Attilio Oliva, Fudan President Prof. Wang Shenghong and Dean of the School of Management Prof. Lu Xiongwen presented the ceremony.

The Opening Ceremony of the Sino-German “IRTG” Project
Sino-German The International Research Training Group (IRTG) was officially launched on Sept. 18 at Fudan campus under the theme of “Materials and Concepts for Advanced Interconnects”. IRTG was initiated by Chinese Ministry of Education and German Research Foundation, and dedicated to development of new materials, techniques, and integrated circuit, and to fostering of relevant educational programs in member universities including co-founders like Fudan University , Shanghai Jiaotong University , Chemnitz University of Technology (German), Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability (German) and Microintegration, and Technical University Berlin (German).
Under current IRTG framework, there would be 20 doctors and 14 post-doctor fellows from each country in the fields of physics, chemistry, material science and electronics working together. Summer schools held for exchange students will also become an key part of the project.
Professor Liu Ran of Fudan Electronics Institute hosted the opening ceremony on the date.Fudan Vice President Chen Xiaoman, Academician Zhou Shichang, Professor Thomas Gessner of Germany ’s Chermnitz University of Technology and Ms. Ebba Scholl of German Consulate General in Shanghai attended the event and delivered insightful speeches to a full audience.

Modern Anthropology Key Lab of MOE Approved
Experts from Department of Scientific and Technological Development, Ministry of Education, assessed and approved the project proposal of launching Fudan’s Key Lab of Modern Anthropology under Ministry of Education. Based on Fudan Center for Modern Anthropology, and integration of relevant disciplines, Fudan University pooled strengths from relevant disciplines and proposed the Key Lab to MOE in 2003, the research fields of which include molecular anthropology, genic biography and biologic informatics among the others.
The initial research results of the Key Lab have been published on journals including PNAS, Science and Nature . A group of promising and established scholars from home and abroad have joined the Lab by now.

CS Ph.D. Candidate Li Hongbo Won “Microsoft Scholar”
Ph.D. candidate Li Hongbo from Fudan School of Computer Science and Engineering won “Microsoft Scholar 2006” together with another 37doctoral students from 45 universities from Japan, Korea, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and be awarded six thousand US dollars each for research study and internship position at Microsoft Research Institute. This selection will further strengthen the communication between doctoral students in IT field and the Microsoft Research Institute in Asia .

Free operation for the 50,0000th Patient in Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan U
The 500, 000th patient of Zhongshan hospital received a free operation in Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan U on 18th September 2006 . The charity operation also marked the commencement of 70th anniversary of Zhongshan Hospital .
Shi Sizhen, the lucky patient from Yunnan Province , aged 55, was diagnosed with rheumatic heart decease as early as forty years ago. On September 11, she was hospitalized in Heart Surgery Department for the operation. Prof. Wang Chunsheng, Director of the Heart Surgery Department, operated on the patient.
Named after Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, Zhongshan Hospital was founded in 1936 and was the cradle of many noted doctors such as Lin Zhaomao, Rong Dushan, Huang Jiasi and Shen Kefei.

Macau Culture Exhibition Opens in Shanghai
Hosted by General Association of Chinese Students of Macau (AECM) and co-organized by Association of Macao College Student in Shanghai , Macau Culture Exhibition – Historical City Block of Macau as a World Heritage opened at Fudan University on September 19.
This Exhibition aims at enhancing the academic and cultural exchange between Shanghai and Macau , delivering messages of Macau to Mainland, and strengthening the communication of the students between the two cities. On the opening ceremony, Macau students performed the unique dance of Macau minority and showed their special school uniforms, which interested many mainland students.
After seeing the pictures of the Exhibition, a student from Mainland China said there is a fine mixture of Chinese and western cultures in the city of Macau as the exhibition reveals but still in which he could strongly felt as something Chinese.
It is reported that after its Fudan stop, the Exhibition will also be taken to Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai Jiaotong University , Shanghai Foreign Languages University , East China University of Science and Technology and Shanghai University .

Fudan Advance to World Final in 13th Dacca Regional Contest of ACM/ICPC
Fudan team won the first prize in the 13th Dacca Regional Contest of ACM/ICPC concluded on September 23 and marched into world finals again. The team members are Xu Yinjie (freshman), Xinwenhui (freshman) and Su Zhan (Sophomore), all of whom majoring in Computer Science and Technology. The team couch is Associate Professor Wu Yonghui of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Two Fudan Professors Awarded Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques
French government awarded to Professor Jin Zhongyuan from Fudan History Department and Professor Chen Zhimin from Fudan School of International Relations and Public Affairs the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques on Sept. 18 for their contributions to promoting communication and exchanges between the west and the east especially in the field of research and education, and the efforts they have made in enhancing friendship between the China and France.
Fluent in Russian, English, French and German, Professor Jin Zhongyuan’s research interest lies in contemporary history of Europe and USA, and WW Ⅱ history. Professor Chen Zhimin, on the other hand, is an expert in foreign policies and the diplomatic policies of EU and China .

Fudan Conferred Honorary Professorship to Nobel Laureate
German Prof. Klaus von Klitzing, Nobel Laureate of 1985 in Physics, was conferred Honorary Professorship by Fudan University on Sept. 19. Fudan President Wang shenghong attended the conferment ceremony and presented the certificate to Prof. Klitzing.
After the ceremony, Prof. Klitzing delivered an insightful and informative lecture titled “Quantum Hall Effect : 1985 Nobel Prize in Physics and its Application” which was warmly welcomed by Fudan faculty and students.
Prof. Klitzing won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1985 with his great contribution to the field and for the discovery of the quantum hall effect. He is now Director of Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research and foreign member of Chinese Academy of Sciences since this June.

Auckland U and New Zealand Trio Visited Fudan
On September 8, Professor McCutcheon, President of Auckland University, and his colleagues visited Fudan for discussion with Fudan counterparts on establishment and management of Confucius Institute at Auckland University . Meanwhile faculty and staff responsible for university technology transfer from both universities held talks for experience exchanges. An companying highlight to the visit of Auckland University delegation was the performance by he New Zealand Trio in residence at Auckland U. Justine Cormack (violin), Sarah Watkins (piano) and Ashley Brown (cello) staged a small but excellent concert in Library of Fudan Journalism School.

Visit by the Norwegian State Secretary
On September 21, the Nordic Centre at Fudan University was honored by a visit by Norwegian State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Karin Yrvin and her delegation.
Coming along with the delegation were also Director General Jan Farberg, Department of Industrial Development and Internationalization, Ministry of Trade and Industry, and advisor Hilde Loeveid Varvin, Department of Industrial Development and Internationalization.
The delegation was received by Vice President of Fudan University, Prof. Xu Zheng, and representatives from Fudan School of Management.
At the introduction of Fudan University ’s extensive collaboration with Nordic partners and BI Norwegian School of Management in particular by Dr. Xu Zheng, Vice President of Fudan, Ms. Yrvin was delighted to know that the Fudan – BI MBA Program enjoyed an alumni body of over 1,200. She spoke highly of the significance of cooperation between Fudan and Norwegian universities.
Ms. Yrvin also delivered a lecture on innovation to the Fudan – BI MBA class, and met with the Norwegian undergraduates from BI who are studying at Fudan at the moment and will stay in Shanghai for one year to finish their undergraduate courses and theses.

Speech by Former French Foreign Minister at Fudan
On September 27, former French Foreign Minister Mr. Hubert Vedrine visited Fudan and delivered a public speech entitled “Face à l’hyperpuissance”, which was warmly received by Fudan faculty and students. During his visit to Fudan together with newly appointed French Consul General in Shanghai Mr. Thierry Mathou, Mr. Vedrine was received by Professor Yan Shuang, Fudan Vice President, who introduced the latest development and plans, and the academic exchanges carried out between Fudan and French institutions.
