CONFERENCE
1st FUIUF International Conference Opened
Fudan University International Urban Forum (FUIUF) launched its first three-day session at Fudan Center for American Studies on Nov. 3 rd . Its theme Urban China: Culture, Identity, and Spatial Transformation ” highlighted critical questions that are confronting China as the nation is experiencing transition to market economy and urbanization at an unprecedented pace and scale. Prof. Nicholas Retsinas, Director of Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, and Prof. Nathaniel G. Pitts, Director of Office of Integrative Activities, National Science Foundation, U.S.A. , attended the Forum. On the date, Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode also announced that Fudan Center for Urban Studies would be upgraded into an Institute in near future to better serve interdisciplinary researches on urban studies.
FUIUF, modeled as a biennial international conference, was jointly established in 2005 by Fudan School of International Relations and Public Affairs and Centre for Urban Studies, aiming to explore the nature of contemporary urban transformation in China and its effect on future generations, to create dialogues between different disciplines in the field of urban studies, and to build a global intellectual platform for academics, urban professionals, government officials, and design practitioners.

Center for Chinese Businessmen Studies at Fudan Established
On Nov. 10, Seminar on Chinese Businessmen and China Economy was held at Fudan Center for American Studies as the launching event of Center for Chinese Businessmen Studies at Fudan, which focuses its research on the history of Chinese businessmen and their significance to the business circles worldwide from innovative perspectives. Topics regarding the origins and entrepreneurship of Chinese businessmen, relations between Chinese business culture and Chinese social culture, and the significance of Chinese individual-owned business to world economy were explored.
Among the scholars, government officials and entrepreneurs that attended the opening ceremony, there were renowned economist Mr. Jiang Xuemo, Mr. Su Dongshui, Director of Oriental Management Research Center and founder of School of Oriental Management, Mr. Pan Shiwei, Director of Shanghai Sciences Association and faculty from Fudan, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
Fduan Vice President Gui Yonghao and Dean of School of Economics Prof. Yuan Zhigang unveiled the plaque for the newly established Center for Chinese Business Studies.

Fudan - Nagoya Institute of Technology Seminar on Information Communication and IT Application in Int’l Expos
On Nov. 13, a delegation of information communication headed by Prof. Akira IWATA, former Vice President of Nagoya Institute of Technology and Senior Advisor on Information of 2005 Aichi World Expo, and Dr. Yaguchi Takaaki visited Fudan Software School and held a seminar with the host on Information Communication and Application of IT Technology in International Expos. In-depth discussions went on between the guests and representatives from Coordination Bureau of Shanghai World Expo 2010 and Fudan faculty.
During the seminar, the Japanese party offered updates with Japan information communication, and share their experience in designing and application of information system during 2005 Aichi World Expo. Prof. Zhao Yiming, Vice Dean of Software School introduced, in return, the development of Software School and its work in expo-related fields. Both parties explored with high interest solutions to the problems in 2005 Aichi World Expo, before the guests were invited to a lab tour at Fudan Software School .

FACES Concluded at Fudan
Forum for American/Chinese Exchange at Stanford (FACES) 2006 launched at Fudan in the evening of November 12, on which students coming from Peking University , Tsinghua University and Fudan University had intensive discussions with American students from Harvard, Yale and Stanford on the theme of “Future of Equality in Sino-US Relations”.
Since 2001, the annual event of FACES has been inviting 40 to 50 leading students from both US and China to discussion of academic, cultural and social issues of mutual concerns. This year, the students had a hot debate on Sino-US relations, including a 4-hour mimic negotiation in which the students played the roles of their national leaders, trying to solve the problems and shoulder the responsibilities as decision-makers.

Yale-Fudan Dialogue on “Universities as a Model for Sino-US Relations”
On Nov. 16, Yale President Richard C. Levin and Fudan Chancellor Qin Shaode had an open conversation on “Diplomacy in the Classroom: Universities as a Model for Sino-US Relations”. The two leaders centered their discussions on exchanges of higher education, Intellectual Property Rights and educational development.
Chancellor Qin commented that to advance knowledge and pursue the truth, the university should be more comprehensive and diverse; to disseminate Knowledge and preserve cultures and values, the university should establish extensive contacts with foreign counterparts and be sharp at learning from them. Students shall become vigorous envoys in international. He wished that FACES would be the beginning for such an international communication.
President Levin expressed his wishes for Yale to be the model to promote Sino-US communication. By illustrating the cooperation between Yale and Fudan, he asserted his confidence in promising future. He also expressed his ideas on IPR protection and bioethical issues; collaboration on issues that involve substantial reforms in Chinese education including granting students more autonomy in the course of education and encouraging students to challenge their teachers, and the models that higher education institutions can provide to Sino-US relations beyond the classroom.

Shanghai Forum 2007 Announced
On 1st Press Conference of Shanghai Forum held on Nov.1, 2006, Fudan President Prof. Wang Shenghong, Chair of Shanghai Forum Organizing Committee, and Mr. Kim Jae-youl, President of the KFAS, announced that Fudan will invite 300 guests from academia, political and business arenas worldwide and convene Shanghai Forum 2007 from May 25 to 27, 2007.
Seeing its mission as “Concentrating on Asia, Focusing on Hot Issues, Congregating Elites, Promoting Interactions, Enhancing Cooperation and Seeking Consensus”, Shanghai Forum 2007 will address key issues in global economy through multi-dimensional and in-depth dialogues and has decided its theme on “Economic Globalization and the Choice of Asia: Energy, Currency and Common Market”. Three sub-topics are “The Evolution of Industrial Structure and Energy Consumption”, “The Determination of RMB’s Exchange Rate and Monetary Cooperation in Asia”, and “The Asian Economic Integration and Asian Competitiveness”, all major issues that challenge China and Asia in the coming five to ten years.
It is expected that a Shanghai Consensus will be reached and submitted to governments as suggestions on ways to promote all-round Asia advancement in academia, politics, society and culture, through analysis of China ’s influence on Asia and Asia ’s choice on the world.
Shanghai Forum Organization Committee has invited renowned individuals from academic, business and political circles as Member of Shanghai Forum International Advisory Board to ensure the success of the event. Among the guests received by the last session of Shanghai Forum in 2005, 61% of them were scholars, 18.5% business representatives, and 18% Asian government and world organization officials. 49% of 2005 guests were from overseas. Future sessions of Shanghai Forum will always be devoted to contemporary key issues to Asia and the world, in the hope that it will evolve into an academic Forum of highest level in a decade.

Fudan Micronano Invented A Channel Demodulator Chip “Zhongshi II”
Fudan Micronano recently released their latest invention, “Zhongshi II”, a channel demodulator chip on national standard DMB-T/H. This is a joint product with Tsinghua University and Fudan University and was on display in the recent China International Industry Fair. It is estimated that application at large scale will be realized in the latter half of 2007 and customers will by then be able to receive clear digital TV programs on both televisions and computers.

Fudan Won 2006 NSSF Key Project
National Social Science Foundation (NSSF) announced winners of its Key Projects 2006, in which proposal by Fudan was included. This was also the only winner, namely research on theory and policy of cultivating a resource-economic and environment-friendly society, was the only winner from Shanghai area and was granted NSSF funds for research.
Organized by Office of Liberal Arts Research, the proposed research project is a collaboration by School of Management , School of Economics , School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Dept. of Environmental Science and Engineering and scholars and professors from institutions other than Fudan. Expected to be completed in December 2009, the project has six topics to investigate, namely theory system, evaluation system, forecast system, strategic measures, protective mechanism, and scenario analysis.

Commencement for Ph.Ds.
On Nov. 11, Fudan University conferred its doctor degrees to over 800 doctoral candidates of Class 2006. Fudan President and Chair of Fudan Degree Committee Prof. Wang Shenghong delivered a congratulation speech and conferred degrees and awarded certificates to the Ph.D.s together with another three Degree Committee members Prof. Peng Yuwen, Prof. Jiang Yihua and Prof. Wang Weiqi. Prof. Gu Yunshen, Deputy Dean of Fudan Graduate School presided over the ceremony.

School of Economics New Building Inaugurated
November 11 saw the inauguration of the new building of Fudan School of Economics. Approved in 2003 and been constructed since May 2004, now the building has a total floor space of 111,546 sq. ft., and have two symmetrical wings like an open book.
Fudan Executive Vice President Prof. Zhang Yihua hosted the inauguration, on which Fudn Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode, Shanghai Municipal Government Associate Secretary-General Mr. Wang Zhan, Dean of Economics School Prof. Yuan Zhigang gave congratulations speeches.

Zhong Shan Hospital Saved a Rare Pulmonary Vas Abnormality Sufferer
On November 21, Zhong Shan Hospital Affiliating to Fudan saved a rare Pulmonary Vas Abnormality case sufferer through Pulmonary AV Shunt by using micro-invasive technology.
Fudan Vice President Dr. Wang Xiaolin from Zhong Shan Hospital put a thin and long pipe into the femoral veins of the patient, whose lungs were full of abnormal agglomerates, through the heart and arteries to the abnormal part, where he put several hair-thin wires to block the abnormal vas.

Fudan Ph.D. Candidates Attended Nobel Laureates Conference
Liu Ying and Cai Shuyi from Fudan Chemistry Dept. and Meng Sheng from Macromolecule Dept. attended Chemistry and Economy: 56th “Nobel Laureates Conference held in Germany recently, as representatives from China together with other promising young scientists and Ph.D. candidates from 20 nations and regions worldwide.
This annual Noel Laureates Conference is where Nobel laureates in chemistry, physics and biology meet the younger generations of scientists and doctoral students. The topic of the conference rotates annually among chemistry, physics and biology. This year, Chinese NSF and German Deutsche Research Federation delegated China-Germany Science Foundation Research and Exchange Center to send 25 Chinese participants to the conference.

Two Centers on Financial Studies Established
On November 27, Fudan Centre for Financial and Capital Market Studies was established with Prof. Xie Baisan from Fudan School of Management appointed Director of the Centre, while Mr. Ma Weihua, Director of China Merchant Bank, was engaged as Senior Consultant.
On the next day, Fudan Centre for Anti Money Laundering Studies (AMLS) was launched, as the very first research organization in the related field among Chinese higher education institutions, with Mr. Xiang Junbo, Deputy Director of The People’s Bank of China, as its Honorary Director.

Six Fudan Professors Entitled “Talent of The New Century” by MOE
Six Fudan faculty, namely Prof. Feng Donglai from Physics Department, Prof. Zhao Dongyuan from Chemistry Department, Prof. Guo Kunyu from Mathematics College, Prof. Zhang Jun from Economics College, Prof. Shao Zhimin from Shanghai Tumor Hospital and Prof. Yuan Zhenghong from Fudan Medical School, were awarded the title of Talent of "The New Century” by Ministry of Education recently, together with the other 84 scholars from universities and institutions nationwide. Fudan shares the ranking of top 1 together with Tsinghua University in terms of total number of faculty awarded.
Listed onto the recent-concluded “National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talent Project”. Fudan ranked No. 1 in the number listed with Tsinghua University .

Prof. Wang Anyi Elected Vice Chair of Chinese Writers Association
Prof. Wang Anyi, from Fudan Chinese Language and Literature Department, was elected Vice Chair of Chinese Writers Association at its 7th General Congress which concluded days ago. Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode wrote Prof. Wang a letter of congratulations on the election.

Law Professor Dong Shizhong Selected into WTO DSB
Ministry of Commerce announced that Fudan Law Prof. Dong Shizhong, a nominee of Chinese government, was selected as panelist of Dispute Settlement Body of World Trade Organization at DSB’s recent regular meeting on Oct. 26.
According to “Understanding on Rules and Procedures Governing the Settlement of Disputes (DSU)”, WTO may refer to Prof. Dong Shizhong as a DSB expert as appropriate when necessary.
As one of the most renowned Chinese experts on International Economic Law, Prof. Dong Shizhong, now retired, was a faculty member of Fudan since 1984, and was Head of Law Department at Fudan and founder of International Economic Law at the university.

VP Yan Shuang Met the Associate Editor-General of Egypt Pyramids, a World-Known Media
On Nov. 1st, Fudan Vice President Yan Shuang received the delegation of Egyptian newspaper Pyramids led by its associate editor-general and accepted a special interview on education of the young generation in the larger context of east and west cultures interaction, basic education during China ’s economic development and educational cooperation between China and African countries including Egypt . VP Yan highlighted that Fudan understood its mission as to nurture the young generations who cherish their ambition and are committed to serve the nation and the world for better.
Founded in August 1876 as a weekly, Pyramids is one of the oldest newspapers in the world and now the most famous daily in Arabic. Its circulation in 2005 exceeded 900,000.

Visit by Mayor of Aarhus County , Denmark
On Nov. 2nd, Mr. Johannes Flensted-Jensen, Mayor of Aarhus County, Denmark, paid his second visit to Fudan University, following his first one in 2003, and was received by Vice President Dr. Xu Zheng who updated Mr. Mayor with Fudan development. Mr. Flensted-Jense, in return, brought Fudan a significant piece of news that Aarhus University is going to merge with other educational institutions such as the Aarhus Business School, Aarhus Agriculture Institute and Institute of Environment Research , as a result of the regional restructuring of Aarhus County merging with another two counties. Mr. Mayor, on behalf of Aarhus University , reinforced its willingness to extend cooperation with Fudan University through Nordic Centre at Fudan.

Debut of Mexican Folk Dance and New Zealand Maori Performance at Fudan
Evening of Nov. 8 saw the debut of Colima Folkloric Ballet by Mexican University as the prelude of Mexican Cultural Series on Fudan Campus. A fully packed auditorium of faculty and students were overwhelmed by flowery costume, bright rhythm, and passionate songs and exotic dancing.
The dawn of New Zealand Day came on the next day, when a montage of five documentaries which would be later available on CCTV was screened and a simply fantastic Maori performance was staged in the student plaza of Guanghua Tower. Fudan Vice President Dr. Gui Yonghao who gave an opening speech to the event earlier and present faculty and students also enjoyed delightful talks with former New Zealand ambassador to China , congressmen, and majors who were visiting Fudan.

Visit by Vice Mayor of Genoa , Italy
On November 14, Ms. Anna Castellano, Vice Mayor of Genoa Italy, visited Fudan and gave a lecture on “The Evolvement of Genoese Noble Mansion, A Candidate for 2006 UN Human Heritage”, which was very well received by Fudan students. This lecture was the first “Approaching Italy” series on campus co-organized by Student Union of Fudan History Dept. and Fudan Youth League Committee.

Honorary Professorship On Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister D’Alema
Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode conferred Honorary Professorship on Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister D’Alema on November 14, for his distinguished achievements in and contributions to the Italian and international politics, and fostering friendship between China and Italy. Prof. D’Alema also attended a Fudan hosted forum entitled China and Italy : Common Challenge in the New Century as a keynote speaker together with Pro.Xie Xialing from School of Social Development and Public Policy, and Pro.Yin Xiangshuo from School of Economics .
Prof. D’Alema, born in Rome , graduated from Philosophy School of Pisa University and became a professional and experienced journalist and a productive writer before he distinguished himself in the political arena. Among his publications, there are "A Mosca l’ultima volta " (Donzelli Editore, 2004), "La politica ai tempi della globalizzazione" (Manni, 2003), "Oltre la paura" (Mondadori, 2002), "Kosovo. IAEA Former Director General Visited Fudan Institute of International Studies
On Nov.15, Mr. Hans Blix, former Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited Fudan Institute of International Studies at the company of Mr. Lars Andresasson, Consul General of Sweden in Shanghai and Mr. Pan Zhenqiang, former Director of Institute of Strategy Studies of China’s National Defense University, and delivered a public lecture to students and faculty about his review on Weapons of Terror, the latest report on Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission. The audience were also interested in his career experience and his comment on arm control, disarmament, and non-proliferation of weapons.
Mr. Blix served as Director General of IAEA from 1981 to 1997, and Executive Chairman of UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) from March 2000 to June 2003. He has been Chairman of the newly-founded Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission from December, 2003 on.
Fudan Vice President Dr. Yan Shuang, Prof. Ren Xiao, Prof. Ding Chun, and Prof. Zhang Guihong from Institute of International Studies received the guests and attended the lecture.

Visit by the Delegation of Vietnamese Ministry of Education
On the occasion of APEC going on and China President Hu Jintao attending APEC in Vietnam , a delegation of 16 from Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training visited Fudan University on Nov. 16. Members of the delegation included Deputy Director of Higher Education Section of Ministry of Education, and leadership and faculty from National Economic University of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh National Politics Institute, and Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The delegation compared notes on topics of common interest regarding social sciences curricular, credits regulations for courses on Marxism, and philosophy, sociology and politics faculty training, with Fudan faculty including Prof. Sang Yucheng, Head of Social Sciences Dept., Prof. Qiu Bosheng from School of International Relations and Public Affairs, and Dr. Ding Yan from Higher Education Research Institute.

Visited by Prime Minister of Bulgaria
H.E. Mr. Sergei Stanishev, Prime Minister of Bulgaria who was on his official visit to China at the invitation of China Premier Wen Jiabao, paid a visit to Fudan University and delivered a public lecture on "Enlargement of EU and the Contributions of Bulgaria to EU" on Nov. 22.
Beginning with the current situation of EU integration, Mr. Sergei Stanishev analyzed the opportunities and challenges for the new EU members after its expansion, and their contributions to EU’s integration process. Mr. Sergei Stanishev also answered questions from interested students regarding Bulgaria ’s gain and loss after joining EU, the relationship between EU member status and domestic political, social and economic transition in Bulgaria , the educational background of Prime Minister himself and its influence on his career. The lecture was presided over by Prof. Ni Shi-xiong, scholar on international politics and former Dean of Fudan School of International Relations and Public Affairs.
Accompanying H.E. Mr. Sergei Stanishev were Minister of Bulgaria Ministry of Economy and Energy, Director of Prime Minister’s Office , Bulgaria Ambassador and Vice Minister of Bulgaria Ministry of Foreign Affairs among the others. Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode received the guests together with Mr. Yu Zhenqi, China ’s Ambassador to Bulgaria , Mr. Wang Junling, Consul from of Department of European Affairs Chinese Foreign Ministry, Mr. Fu Jihong, Deputy Director of Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office, and Dr. Xu Zheng, Vice President of Fudan University.

Holland Ambassador Lectured at Fudan Ambassador Forum
At the invitation of Fudan Ambassador Forum, Mr. Dirk Jan Van den Berg, Ambassador of Holland Kingdom to China, lectured on “China’s Challenge—From Engineering Science to Social Engineering Science” on Nov. 24 on Fudan campus, which was well received by the audience. Mr. Ambassador analyzed the positive effects of a rising China on Sino-Holland relations and commented on the challenges China is facing with the developing economy. He also discussed with the students economic cooperation between China and EU from the perspective of a founding member of EU.
The lecture was presided over by Fudan Professor Mei Zhaolong, who is also Vice Chair of China International Strategic Institute and former Chinese Ambassador to Germany .
