CONFERENCE

 

International Symposium on Advanced Data Management Technology

 

On December 5 the International Symposium on Advanced Data Management Technology was held at Fudan University, focusing on Web Management and Mining and co-hosted by Fudan Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Municipal Key Lab of Intelligence Information Management with supports from Ministerial Key Lab of Data Engineering and Intelligence Engineering at Renmin University of China and Center for Database Studies of Harbin Institute of Technology. 23 experts and scholars from Australia , Singapore , Mainland China and China Hong Kong, researchers from Microsoft Research Asia and Unbounded Learning Company attended the conference.

The First Academic Conference of Sino-Japan President Forum at Fudan

 


First Academic Conference of Sino-Japan President Forum : Innovation and Cooperation: The University’s Role in Sino-Japan Relationship was held at Fudan University on December 9. Topics regarding different higher education models of China and Japan , the innovation ability construction i ssue, exchange and cooperation approaches between Chinese and Japanese universities and commitment of universitie s in 21 st century were discussed.

 

Under the framework of Sino-Japan President Forum , the Conference was jointly initiated by Fudan University , Peking University , Kyoto University and Keio University on the Fourth Sino-Japan President Forum in 2006, seeking ways of building up firm and stable cooperation patterns between Chinese and Japanese universities.

 

The conference has invited presidents and vice presidents from 30 universities in China and Japan . China ’s Vice Minister of Education Zhang Xinsheng, Vice Mayor Yan Junqi of Shanghai , Vice Secretary Jiang Ping of Shanghai Municipality and Former Vice Minister of Diplomacy, former Chinese Ambassador to Japan Xu Dunxin, attended the conference and delivered speech.

Forum on Internationalization of Chinese Local Brands and Localization of International Brands

 

On December 13, 2006 , Forum on Internationalization of Chinese Local Brands and Localization of International Brands was launched in Shanghai . The Forum was co-sponsored by Fudan School of Management and Heidrick & Struggles and supported by media including Harvard Business Review, National Business Daily and Sina.com. The Forum explored the strategies of internationalization of Chinese local brands under a global background and the localization of international brands in Chinese market.

 

Mr. Shi Li, Senior Partner of Heidrick & Struggles, and Prof. Lu Xiongwen, Dean of Fudan School of Management delivered opening speeches in which they remarked that the forum is a collaboration between two strong parties, and would promote the interaction between academia and enterprises so as to study the theories and practice of brand modeling internationally, and the Forum itself can be developed into a novel brand in the future.

Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Forum 2006 Held at Fudan

 

On December 15, Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Forum: Competitiveness Comparison between Shanghai and Hong Kong was held at Fudan University organized by Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute co-founded by Fudan University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2001.

Specialist Forum on the Fluctuating 2006 Chinese Economy in Retrospect

 

December 26 witnessed the opening of Specialist Forum of the Fluctuating 2006 Chinese Economy in Retrospect: Exploring the Strategies of Boosting Economic Competitiveness of China at Fudan School of Economics. The same venue also saw the commencement of Youth Forum of Rising Chinese Economy in globalization on the next day.

 

Both Forums were sponsored by research group for the International Competitiveness of Chinese Economy at Fudan University . Noted professors of Fudan School of Economics such as Prof. Yuan Zhigang, Prof. Hua Min , Prof. Zhang Jun, Prof. Li Weisen and Prof. Huang Youguang ( Monash University in Australia ) looked back on the major challenges to Chinese economy in 2006 and voiced their unique perspectives on these issues. They also forecasted the future development of Chinese economy by discussing with audience. Young scholars from Fudan School of Economics delivered speeches on the Youth Forum. Topics covered decentralization reform, medical insurance, reform on medicare system, exchange rate of Chinese currency and the opportunities and challenges that Chinese tertiary industry and tertiary trades face.

Hong Kong - Fudan MBA (International) 2006 Commencement

On December 3, 2006 Commencement of The University of Hong Kong - Fudan University MBA (International) held in Shanghai, during which 245 graduates received Master degree, including 140 IMBA Class 2004 , 42 IBMA Finance Class 2004, and 63 IMBA Alcatel Shanghai Bell Class 2004. At the average age of 30.6, the graduating class boasts with wide academic backgrounds including engineering, science, economy, arts, management, law, medicine, finance, industry, real estate, communication, education, entertainment, government, retail, welfare, and transportation.

Fudan - BI MBA Program in Sport Industry Launched in Beijing

 

December 20, 2006, Fudan University - BI Norwegian School of Management MBA Program in Sport Industry held opening ceremony in General Administration of Sports of China (GASC) in Beijing. The students are the first cohort for this program and the second for the FUON Sports Marketing MBA Program.

 

This program is continuation and extension of FUON Sports Marketing MBA Program operated by Fudan University , Chinese Olympic Committee and Nike. Based on FUON, the new initiation of Fudan’s partnership with BI aims to train more high-profile management professionals for the sport industry of China , and upgrade its competitiveness and international presence.

 

Class 2007 is now located in Beijing , opening not only to China Olympic Committee, but also to experienced professionals in sport industry or those with interest in sport industry. Students are from various sport sections recommended by China Olympic Committee, and from companies of sport gears or other related fields, with the average age of 37 and average first-hand industry working years of 13.4.

 

Consul Tormod Pettersen of the Norwegian Embassy in China, Mr. Henning Kristoffersen, Director of Chinese Programs of BI, Prof. Gu Yunshen, Executive Vice Dean of Fudan Graduate School, Prof. Sun Yimin, Vice Dean of Fudan School of Management, Mr. Shi Kangcheng, HR Director of GASC and Deputy Secretary General of Chinese Olympic Committee, and Dr. Wang Xiaoping of Nike China, together with the first batch of graduates from FUON Sports Marketing MBA Program all present in the opening ceremony.

EVENT

 

Hua Dong Became 10th Affiliating Fudan Hospital

 

 

On December 16, the signing and opening ceremony, marking Hua Dong Hospital as the 10th affiliating hospital to Fudan University , was held. Hua Dong Hospital (HDH), formerly the Country Hospital , was founded in 1951 and is directly affiliated to Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau and Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Centre. With an area of 40,000 m 2 , it has served as the teaching hospital for the former Shanghai Medical University since November, 1989.

 

Hua Dong Hospital now boasts of 880 beds and 41 clinical departments, with a staff of more than 1,800, among which over 180 hold professorship, associate-professorship or equivalent. Its Special Healthcare Centre, with 108 beds, is the earliest one and has the longest history to provide healthcare for foreigners in Shanghai .

 

Through the hard work of generations, HDH has developed into one of the best municipal general hospitals integrating medical treatment, teaching, research and prevention. Distinct in Geriatrics and Rehabilitative healthcare, the hospital is located in Shanghai but is open to patients from both home and abroad.

First National Trade Center for Biomedicine Founded


Shanghai Patent Trade Center has been upgraded to a state-level patent exhibition and trade center, and the country’s first professional IPR public service platform - Shanghai Biomedicine Trade Center , jointly founded by Shanghai IPR Service Center and Fudan Newsummit Biopharma Co., Ltd., was officially opened on Dec. 4. The Center will provide medicine patent holders and investors with service in clinical research, medicine certificate application, project evaluation, incubation, information retrieval, judicial expertise, exhibition and trading, venture capital and deal assurance. Mr. Ren Jun, President of Fudan Newsummit Biopharma Co., Ltd. elected the first Director of the Center.

New Two Dimensional CCD Array Spectroscope Invented by Fduan

 

Two-Dimensional CCD Array Spectroscope invented and produced by Fudan School of Information Science and Engineering takes only 0.1 second to draw a picture that would previously be drawn in 10 minutes. Prof. Chen Liangyao, Dean and research team leader, revealed that the secrets of the new invention lies in its unique grating structure. The “integrated grating” consisted of ten paralleled gratings tied together is like ten mirrors, reflecting photons with different wavelengths to the detector. This achievement has applied for Chinese Patent and is regarded as original important contribution in spectrum research.

 

Spectroscope is a basic scientific instrument used to make “photos” of light, able to analyze light wave’s important features like energy and length. It is widely applied in industrious world and scientific fields such as biomedicine and national defense. However, this kind of sophisticated scientific instruments is mainly depended on import in our country.

Two Fudan Professors Awarded HLHL Prize

 

Fudan Chemistry Department faculty Professor Chen Fen’er and Professor Lin Guoqiang, the latter of whom is an academician of both Fudan University and Chinese Academy of Sciences, were awarded 2006 Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize (HLHL Prize) for Scientific and Technological Progress (PSTP) in Beijing .

 

As of today, Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation has granted awards for thirteen times since 1994 to 682 achieved scholars excel in science and technology. In 2006, PSTP went to 39 distinguished researchers and Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation (PSTI) to 20.

Prof. Li Daqian Elected Member of French Academy of Sciences

 

Fudan Prof. Li Daqian from School of Mathematical Sciences , Member of The Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been elected Foreign Associate Member of The French Academy of Sciences on Dec. 12. Prof. Li Daqian, so far is the only Chinese mathematician elected into the French Academy of Sciences.

 

Prof. Jean Dercourt, Permanent Secretary of The French Academy of Sciences, referred to Prof. Li Daqian as one of the best experts in the analysis of appearance of discontinuities in the solutions in nonlinear hyperbolic equations.

Prof. Wu Xinbo Selected Editor of Washington Quarterly

 

Professor Wu Xinbo from Center for American Studies at Fudan University was invited as Editor for Washington Quarterly, an American strategic think tank and key journal in International Studies and American Policy Studies, and a member of SSCI. There are six invited editors from outside America this year, namely Mainland China , Japan , India , Russia , France and Britain . Professor Wu Xinbo has three publications on Washington Quarterly since 2001.

Prof. Yang Binghui Awarded by MOH

 

Professor Yang Binghui from Zhongshan Hospital of Fudan University was awarded National Scientific and Technological Progress Award Second Prize, which is the highest national award for popularization of science, together with another ten experts on national health education, during a national meeting of activity series nationwide review for “Health Education in Community” on Dec 21. It was at this meeting that Prof. Yang was also awarded the title of Excellent Expert for his superior performance in activities including “Health Education in Community”.

Publications by Fudan Authors Won National Prizes

The 4th National Prize for Excellent Achievements of Humanity & Social Science of Universities was released recently. The History of Chinese Population co-written by Fudan Prof. Ge Jianxiong won First Prize in History. The works of Prof. Chen Xueming, Prof. Liu Fang Tong, Prof. Zhang Peiheng, Prof. Chen Sihe and Prof. Lv Xinyu won Second Prizes in Marxism, Philosophy, Chinese Literature, Chinese Literature and Journalism & Communications respectively.

 

Besides, seven Fudan faculty, namely Prof. Chen Meng, Prof. You Jianqiang, Prof. Qiu Feng, Prof. Jinli, Prof. Tang Qiqun, Prof. Huang Zhili, Prof. Zhou Shiming, were selected candidates for National Outstanding Young Scientist Foundation.

VISITOR

 

Visit by Basel Switzerland Delegation to Fudan Medical Campus

 

On December 4, 2006 , a Swiss delegation led by Dr Carlo Conti, Governor of the State Base and Head of Health Department of Basel, visited the Medical Campus of Fudan. Also in the delegation was Ms. Sabine Horvath, Head of City Marketing of Basel, Switzerland.

 

Prof. Zha Xiliang, Deputy Dean of Shanghai Medical College received the delegation and reviewed the School’s international academic exchanges, which greatly interested Mr. Carlo Conti who expressed wishes for bilateral exchanges in future.

Chairman of Starbucks Coffee Company Mr. Howard Schultz Lectured in our Master Card Forum of Management Masters

 

On December 13, Chair of Starbucks Coffee Company Mr. Howard Schultz presented a speech titled The Values of Starbucks and The Youth to Fudan students on Mastercard Forum of Management Masters. Mr. Schultz commented that the worldwide success of Starbucks depends not on marketing and sales but on promotion of Starbucks cooperation culture and values as well as on customers’ confidence.

Visit by Deputy Chairman Lin Yi-shih of Taiwan-based KMT

 

 

On Dec. 17, Mr. Lin Yi-shih, Deputy Chair of Chinese Kuomingtang Party (KMT) in Taiwan and President of KMT Youth League, visited Fudan University where Chancellor Qin Shaode received him. Acknowledging Fudan as one of the most popular universities in Mainland China for students from Taiwan , Mr. Lin believed that higher level of mutual understanding was essential to enhance friendship and to foster education of the youth. Fudan, in return, expressed good wishes to academic exchanges between the Straits.

 

In recent years, Fudan has hosted over 149 Taiwan students, including 59 PhD candidates, 69 MA students and 21 undergraduates. Fudan has agreement for cooperation with Taiwan University and Taiwan Cheng-Kung University . Short-term exchange programs including summer camps have been organized as well.

HK “Future Leader” Delegation Visited Fudan

 

 

Hong Kong “Future Leader” Delegation, organized by Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association (HKNGCA), spent a week at Fudan University for lectures, visits, and talks with Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode and students from Mainland China since December 25.

 

HKNGCA, an organization committed to educating the younger generation in Hong Kong , aims to cultivate leadership and initiated “Future Leader” program in 2000. Focusing on “Self-improvement, Home-development, Country-Administration and World-Criticism”, a visit to Fudan University is an important part of the series of the activities in this program.
