ALUMNI

 

The 10th Fudan World Alumni Reunion in Nanchang

 

Jointly organized by Fudan University and Nanchang municipal government and co-hosted by Fudan Nanchang Alumni Association and Nanchang Sci-Tech Bureau, Fudan University World Alumni Reunion was held in Nanchang City on Sept. 23.

 

President Wang Shenghong made a report on Fudan’s efforts in building a world-class university and recent progresses in the areas of faculty and staff training, teaching and research. More than 500 participants attended the reunion, including Fudan alumni representatives around the world, Fudan faculty, Chinese and foreign student representatives, principals of key secondary schools in Jiangxi Province, administrators in Nanchang municipal government and famous enterprise representatives.

 

An opening ceremony was held for the unveiling of "Nanchang Technology Transfer Center of Fudan University" and "Nanchang Learning Center of Fudan Distance Learning School". A strategy summit forum was held afterward, centering on the theme "Rise of Central China in the Context of Regional Cooperation". Mr. Wu Xinxiong, Governor of Jiangxi Province, Professor Zhang Jun, Director of the Research Center of China’s Socialist Market Economy at Fudan University, and Mr. Chen Rongtang, Fudan University alumni, Deputy Director of the Exchanges and Cooperation Office of Shanghai Municipal People’s government, Director of Urban Economic Coordination Office of the Yangtze River Delta Region delivered keynote address.

 

During the two days meeting, theme activities were held such as television interviews, docking talks to attract foreign investment, reunion at Nanchang Military Academy and etc.

CONFERENCE

 

Shanghai Summit Forum 2007 on Comprehensive Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer Held in Zhongshan Hospital

 

On the occasion of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliating to Fudan University’s 70th anniversary, Shanghai Summit Forum 2007 on Comprehensive Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer was held in the Hospital on Sep. 1.

 

The Forum invited Professor Peter Neuhaus, President of European Surgical Association, Professor Zhao Yupei, Chairman of the surgery branch of Chinese Medical Association and Head of the science group of Chinese Association of Pancreatic Surgery, Professor Ni Quanxing, Chairman of Pancreatic Cancer Professional Committee of Chinese Anticancer Association, to deliver keynote speeches. The speakers employed many a video presentation to elaborate on the topics ranging from pancreatic cancer surgery, chemotherapy, to basic research and new clinics, offering an academic feast to the audience.

Cross-Strait Symposium on Neurosciences

 

 

As a part of the celebrative events for the 80th Anniversary of the founding of Fudan Shanghai Medical College, a Cross-Strait Symposium on Neurosciences, jointly organized by the Institute of Neurobiology at Fudan University, National Key Laboratory of Medical Neurobiology, Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University and Southern Taiwan Center of Excellence in Neuroscience, was held at Fengling Campus of Fudan University on Sept. 3 and 4.

 

Professor Feng Xiaoyuan, Dean of Shanghai Medical College, Professor Yang Xiongli, Director for the Institute of Neurobiology, and Professor Chen Qingjian from Taiwan Sun Yat-Sen University delivered speeches on the symposium. Renowned scholars and researchers from cross the Strait participated and presented their latest research findings in neurosciences.

3rd Shanghai International Colorectal Cancer Summit Forum Concluds

 

On Sep. 8, the third Shanghai International Colorectal Cancer Summit Forum was co-hosted by Zhongshan Hospital Affiliating to Fudan University, Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Fudan University and Chinese Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery. Topics of the Forum included liver metastases of colorectal cancer treatment, surgery, the primary and metastasis foci of synchronous surgical resection, colorectal cancer preoperative neo-adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy and new progress of surgical treatment, and laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery. The Forum has invited President of European Liver Metastases of Colorectal Cancer Treatment and Liver Transplantation Association, Prof. Adam (French) to introduce the latest notions in Comprehensive treatment of colorectal cancer liver metastases. Prof. Weiss from Cleveland Medical Center in the United States presented on laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer and new progress in minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer.

 

Shanghai International Colorectal Cancer Summit Forum started in 2005. Several prestigious professors in relevant areas were invited to join the previous two sessions, including Director of Surgery Department of Ambroise Pare in Pairs, President of European Professional Surgical Commission and President of Gastrointestinal Group of EORTC, Prof. Bernard Nordlinger as well as founder of modern chemotherapy of colon cancer, President of European Gastrointestinal Tumor Association, and Prof. Prof. de Gramont of University of Paris. With the participation of experts and scholars all over China, the Forum has delivered remarkable outcomes.

International Conference on Contemporary Chinese Public Administration Studies Held

 

On Sep. 14 and 15, School of International Relations and Public Affairs held International Conference on Contemporary Chinese Public Administration Studies, which aimed to discuss on the status quo and the future tendency of Contemporary Chinese Public Administration Studies.

 

The conference participants from U.S., France, Italy, Korea, Czech, Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong attended the keynote speeches on E-government, Performance Management, Modernization of Public Administration Education, and the evaluation of the existing Chinese Public Administration Studies. Scholars also discussed current states of Public Administration Studies, how to approach to a higher level of research and how to build up an academic community in public administration.

Conference on Key Technology of Aerodreadnought Design and System Engineering Held

 

Jointly held by Fudan University, China No. 1 Aircraft Institute and Shanghai Astronauical Society, Conference on Key Technology of Aerodreadnought Design and System Engineering was hosted by Fudan Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science on Sept. 15.

 

Aerodreadnought Industry is a strategic industry in China’s economic development. The Research and development in Aerodreadnought has thus been supported by both Shanghai municipal government and the central government. 50 participants from research institutes and companies attended the conference.

The 35th International Spectrum Conference Shanghai Assembly Hosted by Fudan

 

Biomedical Research Institute at Fudan University hosted "Pre-CSI XXXV Conference: New Technology and New Methods of Proteomics" on Sep. 22.

 

The Shanghai Assembly invited famous experts and professors in the proteomics and related fields at home and abroad to deliver special reports at the meeting, including Chen Xian (USA), the inventor of AACT (amino acid-coded mass tag), which is widely used in quantitative proteomics; Andreas Prange (Germany); Frantisek Turecek (USA); Steven J. Ray (USA); K. W. Michael Siu (Canada); Qian Xiaohong (China); Tuan Vo - Dinh (USA).

 

The reports mainly relate to the research fields of proteomics and the introduction of new technology and new methods, covering the latest developments and the research outlook in proteomics, reflecting the highest level of the international conference in the protemics-related area.

Medical Dean’s Forum Held at Fudan

 

 

On the afternoon of Sep. 28, “Medical Dean’s Forum – Reform and Innovation of Medical Education” was held at Fudan. President Wang Shenghong, Executive Vice President Wang Weiping, Vice President Liu Jianzhong, Vice President Jin Li attended the Forum as Fudan representatives. Six Deans delivered key speeches, they were Prof. Sibrandes Poppema, Medical Dean of Groningon University, Prof. Wang Debin, Medical Dean of Peking University, Prof. Gavin C. E. Stuat, Medical Dean of UBC, Prof. Zhu Zhenggang, Medical dean of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Prof. Huo Taihui, Medical Dean of Chinese University of Hongkong, Prof. Tian Yongquan, Director of Xiangya Hospital Affiliated to Central South University, Changsha.

COOPERATION

 

Commencement for UCD-Fudan Joint Degree Program on Software Engineering

 

 

On Sep. 7, Commencement ceremony for UCD-Fudan Joint Degree Program on Software Engineering was held at Zhangjiang Campus of Fudan University. The ceremony started with a video speech delivered by Dr. Joe Carthy, Head of UCD School of Computer Science and Informatics, who expressed great support for this joint program. Prof. Zang Bingyu, Dean of Fudan School of Software, addressed the freshmen, encouraging them not only to experience two different teaching methods of the two nations, but also pursue a better understanding of the Irish culture. UCD Program Director presented a T-shirt designed for this program and introduced the development over the past few years.

 

The collaboration between Fudan School of Software and University College Dublin in carrying out the joint degree program on software engineering started in September 2002. Each year, about 50 Fudan School of Software freshmen are selected to join the program and will receive both diplomas from Fudan and UCD upon graduation.

Commencement for Class 2007 of Fudan University

 

 

 

On Sep. 2, Fudan University Commencement Ceremony for Class 2007 was held at Chia Tai Stadium. Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode and President Prof. Wang Shenghong presented at the ceremony together with 3,600 undergraduate freshmen and 3,871 graduate freshmen, attended the ceremony. At the ceremony, 46 mentors for undergraduate and 81 mentors for graduate received their appointment certificates while Vice President Prof. Jin Li announced that four Fudan Ph.D. candidates were awarded the 9th National Awards for Excellent Doctorial Dissertation, with which Fudan ranks second in China.

Fudan Student Xu Feng Became 1st SUMMA Graduate Fellow in China

 

Xu Feng, a Ph.D. candidate at School of Information Science and Engineering of Fudan University, was awarded US SUMMA Foundation Graduate Fellowship for 2007. Xu Feng was enrolled as a PhD candidate at the Ministry of Higher Education Key Laboratory of Wave Scattering and Remote Sensing Information led by Professor Jin Yaqiu of Fudan University in 2003. He was the first Chinese PhD candidate to receive SUMMA Graduate Fellowship.

 

Based in the United States, The SUMMA Foundation was founded by Professor Carl E. Baum to encourage and sponsor research activities in the field of electromagnetics. Since 1996 the SUMMA Foundation has been awarding on an annual basis a Graduate Fellowship in Advanced Electromagnetics to a graduate student of this field for exceptionally creative contributions to the advancement of EM theory and applications.

China’s 1st Self-developed FPGA at Fudan

 

 

The State Key Lab of ASIC and Systems at Fudan University has designed FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) FDP250K and its automatic designing development software system FDE as the very first one of this nature to be developed by Chinese researchers. Thirteen years of the Lab has been devoted to this research project.

 

As is predicted, the value of this particular kind of electronic components will increase from CNY 3.2 billion in 2005 to CNY 6.7 billion in 2010. All the FPGA used in China now are imported at a total cost of CNY 3 billion, one third of which is catered for the military demand and national defense development.

Shanghai Forum 2007 Retrospective Conference & Shanghai Forum 2008 Signing Ceremony held

 

 

Shanghai Forum 2007 Retrospective Conference & Shanghai Forum 2008 Signing Ceremony was held at Yifu Science & Technology Building of Fudan University on the morning of Sep. 18. The three Chairpersons of Shanghai Forum Organizing Committee are Prof. Wang Shenghong, President of Fudan University, Prof. Qin Shaode, Chancellor of Fudan University and Dr. Kim Jae-Youl, President of the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies attended the Conference and Signing Ceremony. Prof. Qin Shaode and Dr. Kim Jae-Youl delivered speeches. Dr. Xu,Zheng Vice President of Fudan University, as well as the Secretary-General and Deputy Director of the Organizing Committee, gave a retrospective summary of Shanghai Forum 2007 regarding its preparation and organization. Dr. Xu also briefed upon the preliminary preparation for next year’s Forum---Shanghai Forum 2008. Prof. Chen Yinzhang, Executive Vice Chairperson of Shanghai Forum Organizing Committee, Assistant President for International Affairs, and Director of Foreign Affairs Office hosted the conference. Prof. Yuan Zhigang, Director of Shanghai Forum Academic Steering Committee and Dean of the School of Economics, Fudan University further expounded on the academic achievement of Shanghai Forum 2007, and introduced the academic organizing framework for Shanghai Forum 2008. Members of Shanghai Forum 2008 Organizing Committee and Shanghai Forum Academic Steering Committee all attended the conference.

 

Shanghai Forum is an international academic forum held by Fudan University and sponsored by Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies. As a program cooperated by both Fudan University and Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, Shanghai Forum has successfully been held twice since 2005. It has won extensive concern and highly attention from people of all walks of life at home and from abroad, which created great influences. At the Signing Ceremony of Shanghai Forum 2008, the Organizing Committee of Shanghai Forum promised to be committed to the setting and realization of the Forum’s long-term strategic goal, and to making the Forum a top-notch international academic forum so as to realize and propel its significance as “keeps its finger on the pulse of Asia and the world’s economic trends”.

 

On the afternoon of Sep. 18, Shanghai Forum 2008 Press Conference & Special Report on China’s Macro-economic Situation was held at Guanghua Tower, Fudan University. Prof. Wang Shenghong, Chairperson of Shanghai Forum Organizing Committee and President of Fudan University, and Dr. Kim Jae-Youl, President of the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, attended the Press Conference and delivered speeches. Dr. Xu Zheng, Deputy Vice Chairperson and Secretary-General of Shanghai Forum, and Vice President of Fudan University, presided over Shanghai Forum 2008 Sub-forum Topic Release. The Chinese University of Hong Kong congratulated the Forum on its success via video message. Prof. Yuan Zhigang, Director of Shanghai Forum Academic Steering Committee and Dean of Fudan University’s School of Economics also gave an introductory speech concerning the topics for next year’s Forum.

 

It is officially announced at the Press Conference that Shanghai Forum 2008 will be scheduled during May 25-27, 2008 in Shanghai, and will be themed on “Economic Globalization and the Choice of Asia: Growth, Transition and Welfare”.

 

Shanghai Forum 2008 will continue to take its mission as “Concentrating on Asia, Focusing on Hot Issues, Congregating Elites, Promoting Interactions, Enhancing Cooperation and Seeking Consensus”, and endeavors to construct a platform for elites from “academic, political and business circles” to exchange ideas and inspire multi-dimensional and in-depth discussion on the important issues of global economy and the international economic situation. Shanghai Forum Organizing Committee is seeking strategic cooperation with many a renowned academic organization to boost the Forum’s long-term development. Up to now, the universities that have confirmed to be strategic cooperation partners of Shanghai Forum include Yale University of U.S., Waseda University of Japan, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. These universities will cooperate closely with the Organizing Committee in the Sub-forum’s preparation, presiding and organizing.

 

After thorough discussion and fully preparation made by the Academic Steering Committee, Shanghai Forum 2008 has set 6 Sub-forums under the following sub-themes, namely Regional Economic Growth and Equality Policies, Financial Transition of East Asia, Sustainable Development of Society and Economy, Asia’s Economic Transformation and International Order, The Strategic Choices for Asian Cities under the Background of Globalization, and Asian Economic Transition---International Environment and Re-construction of System.

Zhongshan Hospital Celebrates Its 70th Anniversary

 

 

Zhongshan Hospital Affiliating to Fudan University, the first general hospital founded by Chinese, celebrated its 70th anniversary of founding on Sep. 22. The Celebration began with an address by Chairman of CPPCC Mr. Zhang Huaixi. Vice Chairman of NPC Standing Committee and Deputy Director of Financial and Economic Committee Mr. Zhang Youcai, Vice Director of NPC Standing Committee of Shanghai Municipal Government Mr. Liu Yungeng, President of Fudan University Prof. Wang Shenghong, and Director of Shanghai Health Bureau Prof. Xu Jianguang attended the ceremony and expressed congratulations. The momentous ceremony was hosted by Director of Zhongshan Hospital, Mr. Qin Xinyu.

 

Zhongshan Hospital Affiliating to Fudan University was established in 1936 and opened in 1937. It was affiliated to Shanghai Medical University from the very beginning and was named after the Pioneer of Chinese Democratic Revolution Dr. Sun Yat-sen (Sun Zhongshan). There were only 250 beds when it was founded and it offers treatment to 1,100,000 outpatients and 40,000 in-patients annually. Zhongshan Hospital has now become a general teaching hospital that focuses on medical care, education, as well as scientific research.

 

Zhongshan Hospital has created many No.1s in the medical history of China: The first China-made artificial heart and lung machine, the first China-made sleeve artificial kidney dialysis machine, the first case of open-heart surgery, the first case of cadaveric renal transplantation surgery, the first case of silk artificial vascular graft surgery, meanwhile this is the first institution that performs internal ultrasonic inspection, ECG, pulmonary function tests and low temperature anesthesia. Recently Zhongshan successfully completed China’s first case of multi-organ transplantation of heart, kidney and liver.

 

Zhongshan Hospital has seven research institutes, covering many areas including cardiovascular disease, liver cancer, and medical imaging technology. Zhongshan also has several Ministries of Health, Key Laboratories of The Ministry of Education, The State key disciplines, Shanghai leading disciplines, among which cardiovascular disease and liver cancer studies enjoy top priority. Liver, heart and kidney transplant is another specialty of Zhongshan Hospital. According to the Hospital’s 11th Five-year Plan, Zhongshan Hospital has set up a new Heart Institute, a Liver Institute and other related teaching and research bases.

Video Report Website for Shanghai Special Olympics 2007 Launched at Fudan

 

On Sep. 28, a video report website (www.specialolympicslive.org) for Shanghai Special Olympics 2007 was launched at Fudan University. When Special Olympics begin on October 2, Internet users of all around the world can follow the games on this site.

 

The project was conducted by the International Special Olympics in cooperation with the University of North Carolina at the Chapel Hill, supported by Fudan School of Journalism. Local higher education institutions including Shanghai University of Foreign Studies, East China Normal University and Shanghai University also joined in the project. During Special Olympics 2007, nearly 300 students from China and the United States will work together to record the game scenes of every athlete and edit and upload the collection of the game scenes to the website. It is learned that the Special Olympics will be awarded over 3,000 gold medals and thousands of ceremony and competition highlights will be expected. In addition, the website will also provide a personal homepage for each and every of the 7,000 athletes.

 

Enterprises including Sony, Apple, Intel, Akamai, 6 Rooms will support the project with cameras, computers, servers, streaming media, video publishing platform and etc.

80th Anniversary of Fudan Shanghai Medical University

 

 

 

On Sep. 29, Fudan University celebrated the 80th Anniversary of the founding of Fudan Shanghai Medical College. Vice Chairman of NPC Standing Committee, Chairman of the Central Committee of Jiusan Society and Shanghai Medical University alumnus Han Qide, Minister of Health Ministry Chen Zhu, Director of the Shanghai NPC Standing Committee Gong Xueping, Chairman of the CPPCC Shanghai Jiang Yiren, Vice Minister of Education Ministry Wu Qidi, Deputy Secretary of Shanghai Municipal Government Yin Yicui, Vice Mayor of Shanghai Yang Dinghua, Vice Chairman of CPPCC Shanghai, President of Fudan University Prof. Wang Sheng Hong and Chancellor of Fudan University Prof. Qin Shaode attended the meeting. Over 1500 guests joined the ceremony, including academicians, directors from central government and Shanghai government, representatives from sister institutions, representatives of Fudan staff and students and Fudan Shanghai Medical College alumni. The Ministry of Education and other ministries, Harvard Medical School as well as other overseas and domestic universities and medical schools sent congratulatory letters and telegrams to the 80th Anniversary.

 

In 1927, Fudan Shanghai Medical College’s predecessor National Fourth Medical School of Zhongshan University was founded in Wusong, Shanghai by which the founder, Prof. Yan Fuqing, stepped on the long and difficult road to establish a Chinese-operated medical school. After generations of hard work, Fudan Shanghai Medical College has become a prestigious and influential school where maters gather.

 

In 2000, according to the national strategic planning of higher education, Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University merged, which unveil the development of medicine in the background of a comprehensive university. Over the past seven years, relying on the comprehensive advantages of new disciplines of Fudan University, medical disciplines aimed at the forefront of medical sciences. The Collage continually achieved higher levels of outcomes in interdisciplinary fields and the overall strength has been consolidated and upgraded with the number of national medical few key subjects increasing from 13 to 23 and active medical researches. With the increase of funds and projects, the institute boosts with publication in top international journals such as Science, Nature and Cell. During the past seven year, the College received one national first prize for scientific and technological progress and nine second national prizes for natural science, technological invention and Sci-Tech advancement.

Academician Prof. Li Daqian Elected Member of European Academy of Science

 

Prof. Li Daqian, Academician of Chinese Academy of Science, was congratulated for being elected as Academician of European Academy of Science in the mathematics branch, which was expressed in a letter to Fudan from Chairman of EAS in August.

 

EAS is committed to developing science and technology in Europe and the world, promoting international cooperation, scientific research and innovation. As an independent organization, there are 520 academicians, all of whom are distinguished scientists including many Nobel laureates. New academicians are elected by the joint decision by the Scientific Committee and the Executive Committee of EAS. Last year, Prof. Li Daqian was selected International Academician of French Academy of Science in 2006.

 

Prof. Li Daqian is an industrious researcher in mathematics and a caring educator to students.

Foreign Affairs Assistant Minister Cui Tiankai Appointed Lecture Professor at Institute for International Studies

 

 

On Sept. 15, Assistant Minister Cui Tiankai of Ministry of Foreign Affairs was conferred Lecture Professorship by Institute for International Studies, Fudan University. With rich experience in diplomatic service, Cui’s influence in both domestic and abroad is believed to contribute to the future work at the Institute of International Studies.

 

Professor Shen Dingli, Executive Vice-Dean of Institute for International Studies presided over the conferring ceremony at which faculty and student representatives were present. Cui had a discussion with participants on Japanese politics, Sino-ASEAN Relations and Taiwan Strait issues after the ceremony.

The General History of Chinese Administrative Division by Fudan Professor Published

 

A three-volumes The General History of Chinese Administrative Division, on Song & Western Xia Dynasties, Ming Dynasty and Republic of China respectively, chief-edited by Prof. Zhou Zhenhe was recently published by Fudan University Press. With altogether twelve volumes divided by historical periods, from Pre-Qin Dynasty to Republican Period, this book covers not only the longitudinal study on the historical changes of Chinese administrative division but also the lateral study on different administrative regions at the same time. As the first book on the general history of Chinese administrative division in academic sense ever since the founding of People’s Republic of China, its production was particularly cared by Fudan University Press. The total twelve volumes of nearly10,000,000 words are expected to publish within three years.

CAS Academician in Genetics Invited As Dean of IBS

 

 

On Sep. 29, the appointment ceremony for CAS Academician Professor He Lin as Dean of Institutes of Biomedical Sciences (IBS), Fudan University, was held in medical campus.

 

Committed to genetics and genomics, He’s research team discovered the causes of one of autosomal dominant disorders and those for He-Zhao deficiency which is a novel distinct form of agenesis of permanent teeth. His pioneer work with international influence in related fields also includes the discovery of the relationship between certain genes and mental diseases. With nearly 200 papers published and 5 patents registered, Academician Prof. He has been awarded a number of state-level and municipal-level prizes on science and technology.

 

With the largest investment for integrated biology and medicine studies, IBS is the most important scientific innovation platform at Fudan. It is believed that Academician Prof. He’s involvement will facilitate IBS’s pursuit of goals and upgrade to a world-class biomedical research institute for vital diseases.

Academician Chen Haozhu Donates One Million to Medical Student Fund

 

 

 

During the celebration of 80th Anniversary of the founding of Fudan Shanghai Medical College, China’s renowned cardiovascular disease expert and Director of Shanghai Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, professor of Zhongshan Hospital and Academician Chen Haozhu donated one million to Education Development Foundation at Fudan University to establish Chen Haozhu Medical Student Fund to finance the best performing students who suffer from economic difficulties throughout their education programs at Fudan Shanghai Medical College.

 

Prof. Chen is one of the founders of Invasive cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment method. Prof. Chen has published over 300 articles, and is editor-in-chief of 8 books, including Medical Sciences, Chinese Medical Encyclopedia – Cardiology, co-editor of 21 books and primary translator of 5 books. He has be rewarded many prizes in scientific researches, including two First Prizes for Shanghai Outstanding Teaching Achievement, one Second Prize for National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, six First Prizes for Significant Scientific and Technological Progress by National Science Conference of Ministry of Health and Shanghai. In 1990, Prof. Chen was awarded a prize of “Outing Standing Achievements in Forty-year Scientific Research in College Education”. In 1991, he was awarded a prize of “Outstanding contributions to the development of Public health” by the State Council.

 

Born in 1924 in Guangdong province, Prof. Chen was elected Chair of the 7th, 8th and 9th Shanghai Municipal Government Committee, Member of the 7th, 8th and 9th Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee, Vice Chair of 7th, 8th, 9th CPPCC Shanghai, Vice Chair of Farmer’ and Workers’ Democratic Party. Prof. Chen is now Director of Shanghai Institute of Cardiovascular Disease.

Fudan Confers Chair Professorship on Pharmacologist from NUS

 

On Sep. 28, Fudan University conferred Chair Professorship on Prof. Philip Moore, renowned pharmacologist and Vice Dean of Medicine School of National University of Singapore. It is believed that, with his great scientific attainments and high reputation in international pharmacology research, especially the influential research on carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide, Prof. Moore’s input would foster the research capacity for School of Pharmacy.

President Wang Shenghong Meets U. S. Ambassador Mr. Clark T. Randt Jr.


 

On the afternoon of Sep. 3, U.S. Ambassador Mr. Clark T. Randt Jr. visited Fudan Center for American Studies and delivered a speech on the topic of “Current Sino-US Relations”, restating the “One China” policy of the U.S. government, and confirming the U.S. government’s objection to the adventurous behavior of the so-called “Taiwan’s UN Membership Application by Referendum” of Taiwan Authority.

 

Mr. Clark T. Randt Jr. was invited by Center for American Studies to Fudan campus. Before the speech, President Shenghong Wang met Mr. Clark T. Randt Jr. and other delegates. Over 400 students from School of Journalism, School of International Relations and Public Affairs and College of Foreign Languages and Literature attended the talk and put forward several related questions to Mr. Clark T. Randt Jr.

 

Mr. Clark T. Randt Jr. graduated from Yale University and has been working in China for six years.

Wife of Hungarian Premier Visits Fudan Children’s Hospital

 

 

On Sep. 5, a delegation led by Mrs. Klara Dobrev, wife of Hungarian Premier, visited the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Fudan Children’s Hospital and participated the medical equipment donation ceremony of Innomed Medical Inc. Hungary, where she was also received by Chair of Shanghai Women’s Association Meng Yankun and Fudan Vice President Prof. Gui Yonghao.

 

Prof. Gui welcomed the delegation on behalf of Fudan University and the Children’s Hospital and looked forward to more cooperation between Fudan University and Hungarian universities.

 

Mrs. Dobrev was accompanied by wife of Minister of Economy of Hungary, wife of Hungarian Ambassador, wife of Hungarian Consul General in Shanghai and wife of Chinese Ambassador to Hungary.

President of Tufts University Visits Fudan


 

On the morning of Sep. 6, President Lawrence Bacow from Tufts University, USA, together with their senior delegation visited Fudan University. This is the first time that Prof. Lawrence Bacow visited Chinese domestic university. President Wang Shenghong received the Tufts delegation and delivered a welcoming speech. After the meeting, Prof. Feng Xiaoyuan, Vice Dean of Huashan Hospital Affiliating to Fudan University signed a cooperation agreement with the Dental College of Tufts University.

 

In the morning, professors from Nutrition Institute of Tufts University had a seminar with professors from School of Public Health of Fudan University and doctors from Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University. In addition, Fudan faculty from School of Management and School of International Relations and Public Affairs briefly introduced their teaching, research programs and international exchange situations respectively to the Tufts delegation.

 

Founded in 1852, Tufts University is a private university in Boston, USA. The university places an emphasis on international education, with its Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy among the most prestigious institutes for international affairs in the world. The School has cultivated several US ambassadors.

Visit by University of East Anglia

 

On the afternoon of Sep. 11, a delegation led by Prof. Davies of University of East Anglia visited Fudan Department of Environmental Science and Engineering and was received by Fudan Vice President Dr. Xu Zheng. Prof. Chen Jianmin, Dean of Environmental Science and Engineering, Prof. Yang Xin, Deputy Dean, Ms. Zhang Honglian, Director of Alumni and Development Office, also attended the meeting.

 

As his second visit to Fudan, Prof. Davies expressed his visit purpose as to further discuss the joint projects in energy saving and emission reduction and the design of energy saving buildings. After the meeting, the delegation visited Jiangwan campus of Fudan.

Visit by the Minister of Education and Ecclesiastical Affairs of Denmark


 

On Sep. 21, Mr. Bertel Haarder, Minister of Education and Ecclesiastical Affairs of Denmark, visited Fudan University and learned bilateral exchanges and cooperative programs between the two nations in educational, academic and cultural areas from Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode, Prof. Yin Zhiwen, Vice Dean of School of Management, Prof. Sun Jian, Chair of Department of English Language and Literature, and Assoc. Prof. Fan Lizhu from School of Social Development and Public Policy.

 

Chancellor Qin extended his warm welcome to the delegation, followed by a brief introduction to the University and its internationalization. He stressed that Fudan University is among the earliest in establishing cooperation with Nordic universities, and in recent years, a steady growth in academic exchanges and progresses in deepening the bilateral educational cooperation between China and Denmark have been witnessed. Mr. Haarder gave a positive comment on the current cooperative relationship between the two nations and expressed his wish to achieve further cooperation by introducing Danish educational institutions and system to China and establishing partnership with Chinese counterparts.

 

Ms. Tone Helene Aarvik, Program Manager of Nordic Centre, gave a brief introduction to the Nordic Centre and its activities while the other professors present introduced their collaborations with Danish or Nordic universities. Moreover, some Danish students who are studying at Fudan at the moment as exchange students also attended the meeting and shared with the delegation their great experiences living and studying in Shanghai. Mr. Haarder appreciated the meeting and discussions that offered a vivid picture of the ongoing cooperation between Danish and Chinese Universities, and hoped that the new educational policies in Denmark will encourage increasing number of Danish students to take part in various exchange programs.

 

The delegation also included Mrs. Birgitte Haarder, wife of the Minister, Mr. Torben Kornbech Rasmussen, Director of International Relations of Ministry of Education, Ms. Line Aarsland, Head of Press of Ministry of Education, Mr. Svend Boje Madsen, Minister Plenipotentiary and Deputy Head of Mission from the Royal Danish Embassy in Beijing and Mr. Carsten Boyer Thoegersen, Consul General of Denmark in Shanghai.

Minister of Science and Technology of Brazil, Mr. Sergio Rezende Visits Fudan

 

 

On the afternoon of Sep. 21, Mr. Sergio Rezende, Minister of Science and Technology of Brazil visited Fudan University and was warmly received by Fudan Vice President Prof. Gui Yonghao. Prof. Li Gaoping, Deputy Director of Division of Science and Technology, introduced the current situations of scientific research in Fudan University in detail, and so answered related questions posed by the guests.

 

The main purpose of Mr. Sergio Rezende’s visiting China is to visit one of the satellite launch centers. But he also visited some of the key universities in China such as Peking University, Tsinghua University and Fudan University during his visit. This is also the first time that Mr. Sergio Rezende visited China.

 

During the meeting, Mr. Sergio Rezende listened to the introduction with interest, and expressed his admiration for the scientific research capabilities of Fudan University. Mr. Sergio Rezende also wished that universities of both China and Brazil should strengthen exchanges in the field of scientific research. After the meeting, Mr. Sergio Rezende visited Fudan-Yale Developmental Biology Experiment Base as well.

Visit by Uruguay Consul General in Shanghai

 

 

On the afternoon of Sep. 26, Mr. Carlos Irigaray, Uruguay Consul General in Shanghai, visited Fudan University and was received by Prof. Chen Yinzhang, Assistan President for International Affairs and Prof. He Junzhi from School of International Relations and Public Affairs. Prof. Chen introduced the general information of Fudan to Consul General while Mr. Carlos Irigaray introduced the social and educational situations of Uruguay and the general situation of Uruguay’s trade cooperation with China. He expressed his wishes that Uruguay and China could reinforce educational cooperation in the future. Both parties agreed that the two should communicate for further cooperation.

Visit by Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation of Denmark


 

On Sep. 27, a Danish Science and Business delegation headed by Mr. Helge Sander, Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation of Denmark, visited Fudan University. Idea exchanges on research interest and discussions on future academic and research cooperation were held between the delegation members and experts from related fields of the University.

 

Mr. Helge Sander was accompanied by Mr. Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen, the new Danish Ambassador to China and Mr. Carsten Boyer Th?gersen, Consul General of Denmark in Shanghai, Danish company representatives, as well as a group of professors and experts from the major Danish universities and institutions.

 

Associate Vice President and Director of Fudan Foreign Affair Office Prof. Chen Yinzhang chaired the meeting. Prof. Zhong Jiang and Prof. Wang Xuelu from School of Life Sciences and Prof. Zhang Shili from Institute of Micro-electronics introduced their research interests as well as the recent cooperation with Nordic universities within their fields of study. Questions on details of academic issues in different research fields were brought up by the visitors and a heated discussion followed. The company representatives also expressed great interest in the possibility of establishing cooperation with university labs and industrializing the research results.

 

After the meeting, the delegation had a guided tour to one of the state key laboratories of the School of Life Sciences, Institute of Developmental Biology and Molecular Medicine, and gave a positive comment upon the university research capacities.

 

Fudan President Wang Shenghong host an official reception for Minister Helge Sander and briefed the delegation about the history and latest development of Fudan University. The Minister spoke highly of the increasing cooperation and exchanges between Fudan University and Nordic universities, and expressed his wish and support for further friendship and cooperation between Fudan and Danish institutions.

 

In the afternoon, Minister Helge officially launched The Innovation Denmark in Shanghai, which is the second one established by the Danish government in the world, only after the first one launched in Silicon Valley of USA in summer of 2006.
