CONFERENCE
“2007 2nd Shanghai Biomedical Sciences Seminar – Ubiquitin” Concludes
On November 8, “2007 2nd Shanghai Biomedical Sciences (IBS) Seminar – Ubiquitin” was hosted by Institute of Biomedical Sciences on Fenglin Medical Campus.
The Conference was presided over by Prof. Xiong Yue, Chinese-American Biologist, Professor of University of North Carolina, distinguished part-time PI of IBS, Fudan University. The conference invited Professor James Zhijian Chen from Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Professor Peter Jackson from Stanford University. Professor Ning Zheng from University Of Washington, Seattle, Professor Raymond J. Deshaies from Howard Hughes Medical Institute delivered keynote speeches.
Around 200 teachers and students, from Fudan or other universities in Shanghai, attended the conference.

Symposium on Asian Situation and Chinese Diplomacy
On November 9, Symposium on “Asian Situation and Chinese Diplomacy” was held at Institute of International Studies. Ambassador Mei Zhaorong, Former Chairman of Chinese People’s Diplomacy Academy and Special Visiting Professor of Fudan University, and Ambassador Wu Donghe to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea were invited to the symposium for keynote speeches. 30 scholars from Shanghai Central Party School, Nanjing University, Yunnan University, Shanghai International Studies University, Tongji University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Fudan University attended the symposium. Heated discussion was also held among the participating scholars on the Asian-Pacific situation, the new diplomacy agenda of the Chinese Government, and the new ideas in diplomacy from the 17th National Congress of CPC.

Mizuho Forum Held at Fudan
On November 13th, Mizuho Forum on Capital Market and Enterprise Management was jointly hosted by Fudan Center for Japanese Studies and Japan Mizuho Bank.
Prof. Ding Guanghong, Assistant Vice President of Fudan University, and Vice President Matsuda of Mizuho Bank attended the Forum and delivered addresses. Mr. Hu Ruyin, Director of Shanghai Stocks Exchange Research Center, Mr. Mao Zhihao, Director of Program Management Office, National Foreign Currency Bureau Shanghai Branch, Mr. Nishiguchi, Former Chairman of Board and CEO of Japan Kyocera Corporation, Mr. Nakashima, Executive Trustee of Mizuho Research Institute, attended the forum and delivered keynote speeches. 46 guests from China and Japan, as well as 150 Fudan students and 46 students from other universities participated in the forum.
With the Chinese capital market stepping into the new historical period, the influence of “Multi-level capital market construction” on enterprise management is now a general concern. Mizuho Forum aims to attract both Chinese and Japanese scholars to exchange their ideas on enterprise management under the globalization background.

Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Trend Forum 2007
In 2005 and 2006, the 1st and 2nd “Shanghai –Hong Kong Development Trend Forum” were held successfully in Hong Kong and Shanghai respectively. On November 19, “Shanghai – Hong Kong Development Trend Forum 2007” was held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This year’s Forum focused on the hot economic and social issues in the two cities. Altogether six famous scholars from Shanghai and Hong Kong delivered keynote speeches. Vice President of Fudan University Dr. XU Zheng, Vice President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Kenneth Young attended the forum and delivered speeches.
Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute was established in January 2001 by Fudan University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Through various academic activities and publications, the Institute aims at providing policy advice to both the public and private sectors, contributing to the common prosperity of Shanghai and Hong Kong and improving the academic strength of the two supporting universities. Professor Yang Nvwan, a guest professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Professor Hua Ming, Dean of the Institute of World Economy of Fudan were appointed Deans of the Shanghai –Hong Kong Development Institute.

Seminar on Public Health Clinical System of Yangtze River Delta Held
The 12th Seminar on Public Health Clinical System of Yangtze River Delta was hosted from Nov. 23 to 25 by Fudan Public Health Clinical Center.
The subject of the seminar this year was “Health, Progress, and Harmony.” The Seminar received and published 318 papers and more than 300 participants attended the seminar. Ten papers were selected for presentations while another 40 were selected as topics for specific professional group discussion, including etiology, pathology, immunology, molecular biology, epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical studies of infectious diseases, liver transplantation and artificial liver treatment experience, the latest progress of anti-virus treatment of viral hepatitis, severe hepatitis, early diagnosis and treatment experience of hepatitis pregnancy, viral hepatitis, recent research on blocking mother-to-child AIDS transmission, latest progress of AIDS treatment research, prevention and control of new and sudden infectious disease, management of infectious disease hospital, experience and conclusions of various infectious diseases clinical care and clinical laboratory.
Public Health Clinical Care Association, formerly Yangtze River Delta Infectious disease hospital collaboration center, was found in 1986 in Shanghai. Up to now, there are 14 member institutes. In the past 11 years, 11 academic seminars were held, with notable results covering medical, nursing, medical technology and management among the other fields.

Queen’s China Liaison Office Established at Fudan
On Nov. 5, Vice President of Queen’s University, Dr. John Dixon who is in charge of the international exchange and academic affairs, together with his delegation, visited Fudan University. President Wang Shenghong cordially met the delegation from Queen’s University and signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Dr. John Dixon between Queen’s University and Fudan University for continuous and further cooperation.
On the date, an inaugural ceremony of Queen’s China Liaison Office was ceremoniously held in the Guanghua Towers. Dr. John Dixon, Prof. Chen Yinzhang, Assistant President and Director of Foreign Affairs Office, Canadian consul general in Shanghai Madame Susan Gregson delivered speeches on the ceremony successively to congratulate the establishment of the Office. They all expected that Queen’s University and Fudan University would have extensive cooperation in more fields.
Queen’s University has had a seven-year cooperation history with Fudan University. It has already become one of the most important partners in the international strategy implemented by Fudan University. According to the MOU, the two universities will carry out extensive cooperation in the field of teaching and scientific research. The cooperative programmes mainly include exchange visiting activities among teachers of the two universities, exchange programmes for students, laboratory programmes about research on the environment during the process of urbanization and developing graduate programmes on policy-studying with the School of Economics. The courses will include discussion on Chinese policies and Chinese economic reform, Development Programme for undergraduate students with School of Social Development and Public Policy, cooperative research and teaching programmes about biodiversity with School of Life Science.
Queen’s China Liaison Office is located in Room 601 of the east sub-wing of Guanghua Towers, and the person in charge is Prof. Zhang Zhiyao.

Fudan Delegation Visits the University of Iceland
A Fudan University delegation led by Chancellor Qin Shaode visited the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, Iceland from Nov 7 to 11, 2007.
An agreement on exchanges and cooperation between Fudan University and the University of Iceland was signed by Chancellor Qin Shaode and Prof. Kristín Ingólfsdóttir, Rector of University of Iceland, on November 8. According to the agreement, the two universities will carry out various forms of exchange and cooperation, including student and staff exchanges, research cooperation, and joint degree programmes among the others.
During the stay in Reykjavik, Chancellor Qin and the delegates were invited by the President of the Republic of Iceland H.E. Mr. Olafur Ragnar Grimsson to his residence for a friendly meeting. H.E. Grimsson warmly welcomed the Fudan delegation to Iceland and expressed his gratitude to Fudan’s hospitality during his last visit to Fudan in early October. He was very happy to see the agreement signing between Fudan and the University of Iceland, mentioning a few areas for potential cooperation, like earth sciences, geo-thermal resources, prevention of desertification and remote-sensing technology. In the end of the meeting, Chancellor Qin extended Fudan’s invitation to President H.E. Grimsson to attend 2008 Shanghai Forum next May hosted and organized by Fudan University.
The delegation also attended the Board and Council meetings of the Nordic Centre held at the University of Iceland, which became the first and so far the only Icelandic member university of Nordic Centre in 2006. Representatives from member universities of the Nordic Centre came together and discussed major issues of the centre. The main point on the agenda was the renovation project of the new Nordic Centre Building on Fudan campus. It is agreed that the 24 Nordic member universities will together raise funds for a new Nordic Centre building on the current location of Foreign Affairs Office Building, and the new building will be shared between Nordic Centre and Foreign Affairs Office when it’s completed.

First Alumni Forum for BI-Fudan Joint MBA Programme Concludes
About 100 graduates from Norwegian School of Management (BI) – Fudan University MBA Programme returned to the School of Management at Fudan to attend their first alumni forum on November 29, 2007, co-organized by Fudan School of Management and BI.
BI Professor Hanno Roberts joined hands with Paul Campbell, senior vice president of DET NORSKE VERITAS (DNV), to deliver a speech titled “Intellectual capital – how to manage the knowledge resources of a firm” on the forum.
This was the first time for BI and Fudan University to sponsor an alumni forum for their joint MBA programme, which was launched in 1996, tending not only to cultivate outstanding professional managers with global visions, but to provide an extensively interactive platform for communication between universities, enterprises and alumni. By taking part in the Forum, among other means, Alumni are expected to receive further academic training in a sustainable way in the School, but improve their social networking.

From October 30 to November 2, the global final for 2007 TopCoder Collegiate Challenge, Component Development Competition was held in Orlando, the United States of America. Li Yang, a student at the School of Computer Science and Engineering of Fudan ranked No. 5 in the competition.
2007 TopCoder Collegiate Challenge is a global competition and only eight college students all over the world entered the final round. Li Yong’s success brought glory and much joy to Fudan campus.

5 Million Donated to Fudan Premium Fund of Management
On Nov 1, Chairman Huang Mingduan from Health Result Investments Limited, China, on behalf of Dr. Yin Yen-liang,Fudan trustee and Chairman of Taiwan Ruentex Group, donated CNY 5 million to Fudan Premium Fund of Management. On the donation ceremony Prof. Qin Shaode, Fudan Chancellor and Vice Chair of Fudan Premium Fund of Management, expressed his appreciation to the donators and invited Chairman Huang to the position of board member of Fudan Premium Fund of Management. Also at present were Director Tang Wei from Dept. of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, and Director General Hong Wankong from Shanghai RT-Mart Ltd., Co.

2007 Management Science Award Presented
Management Science Award 2007, the first award of its kind in management science, sponsored by Fudan Management Science Foundation (FMSF), was presented on November 2 after an eight-month evaluation.
In the afternoon, the awarding ceremony was held in Zijingang Campus of Zhejiang University. Mr. Li Lanqing, Fudan alumnus, former Member of the Standing Committee of CPPB (Communist Party Political Bureau), and former Vice Premier and Chair of FMSF, presented the award to the first-award winner, Prof. Wang Zhongmin,Executive Vice Dean of Management School of Zhejiang University, for his achievement in management psychology. The second award went to Porf. Chen Guoqing, Executive Vice Dean of Business School of Tsinghua University for his achievement in e-commerce and corporate informationalization. Prof. Li Weian, Dean of Business School of Nankai University, won the third award for his research in company management and operation.
Fudan President Wang Shenghong introduced the work of FMSF in 2007 and encouraged scholars and professionals in management science to devote in research and put theory in practice. Prof. Yang Wei, President of Zhejiang University, Prof. Yang Yuliang, Director of Degree Office of State Council, attended the ceremony.
In the morning, a forum for the Deans of Business Schools in China was held, centering on the topic of “building the discipline of business administration and nurturing of talents”. In the afternoon session there was a “Dialogue on the Strategic Development of Yangtze River Delta”, where Prof. Long Yongtu participated and gave a speech.
Fudan Management Science Foundation was founded by Mr. Li Lanqing in 2005, aiming to foster the development of the management science in China, nurture talents in this field, and help to adapt management science to particular Chinese contexts. The launch of the foundation was widely echoed by donations from both home and overseas. The annual award from FMSF covers three major areas, namely management science, business administration and public administration. Award 2006 was presented to the best studies in management science while Award 2007 will be presented to those in business administration.

Vice President Chen Xiaoman Attends the Sino-Japan University President Forum and the 130 Anniversary Celebration of the University of Tokyo
On November 7 to 9, Fudan Vice President Prof. Chen Xiaoman attended the Fifth Sino-Japan University President Forum in Tokyo, Japan, and delivered a keynote speech on “Deepen the Academic Reform and Enlarge the International Cooperation”. During the Forum, Vice President Chen Xiaoman was invited by President Saeki of Hokkaido University, President Nogami of Kobe University, and President Tsuji of Osaka University, for individual meeting panels and discussed with them bilateral exchange and cooperation programs.
The University of Tokyo hosted the 5th Sino-Japan University President Forum, which focused on ways of further deepening the bilateral exchange and cooperation between Chinese universities and Japanese Universities. 15 Chinese universities and 16 Japanese universities attended the Forum.

Fudan Ranks No.4 in the 10th “Challenge Cup”
The tenth "Challenge Cup" National University Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Work Competition ended on Nov. 19, in which Fudan ranked the forth. Wang Jinyi and Huang Beibei from Chemistry Department won a top award with their project “Technology of Metal Wiring Desktop Processing”. Zhu Yeyi and Liu Qikun from Shool of Life Sciences also won a top prize with the project “Green DNA Extraction Kit Preparation Methods - Non-invasive and Convenient Trace Rare DNA Samples of New Silica Gel Extraction". Wei Jiashi from School of Life Sciences presented “Biodegradable Oil Pollutants New Strain and Key Enzyme of Rational Design and the Transformation” which won him a second prize. “China 2010 Expo Services-effective Forecast Model and Empirical Research” designed by Xu Fang, Fan Jingxuan, Gao Wei, Pu Yang, Wu Jianchao, Zhao Yingxin from School of Mathematics and “Impact Factors and Social Integration of Shanghai Mobile Children” proposed by Zhang Panke, Li Lun, Zhang Chunliang, Li Hui from School of Social Development and Public Policy were awarded second prizes. The project “Preparation of UV Irradiation Grafting Hydrophilic Charged Nano-filtration” by Yuzhen and Yin Guannan was awarded a third prize.
The final round of “Challenge Cup” this year was held from Nov. 15 to 19 in Nan Kai University. Among the projects submitted by 343 universities from Mainland China, 25 universities from HongKong, Taiwan, Macao and 6 overseas universities, 25 received top awards, 84 first prizes, 226 second prizes, and 605 third prizes. The top five universities are South-East University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing University, Fudan University, and Nan Kai University. The 11th “Challenge Cup” is going to be held at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2009.

Visit to Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd. by VP Xu
On the noon of Nov. 20, a delegation from Fudan University led by Vice President Dr. Xu Zheng visited President of Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd. Mr. Kuo Ping-sheung and VP Xu exchanged ideas on further exchange and cooperation.
Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd. donated CNY 7 million to Fudan University in 2006 to set up Fudan Sun Hung Kai Properties Kuo’s Fund to sponser full-time bachelor degree candidates with academic merits but inadequate financial resources. During the meeting, Vice President Dr. Xu Zheng expressed her appreciation of the care and support by Sun Hung Kai and invited President Kuo Ping-sheung to assume the position of member of the forth board of trustees of Fudan University.
After the meeting, Professor Shi Lei, Hua Min and Sun Lijian from Fudan School of Economics delivered keynote speeches on the heated topics to the senior management of the company and answered questions raised by the audience. This activity was expected to promote communication and interaction between the trustee’s company and the university, and to explore new ways of training and consulting offered by the university to the company.

Fudan Children’s Hospital Celebrates Its 55th Anniversary
On Nov. 21, Children’s Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University celebrated its 55th anniversary and inaugurated a new building. Leadership from Shanghai Municipal Government, including Mr. Gong Xueping, Mr. Jiang Yiren, Ms. Yin Yicui, Fudan President Prof. Wang Shenghong, and Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode attended the celebration, together with Vice Minister of Health Mr. Chen Xiaohong.
Founded in 1952, Shanghai Children’s Hospital was originally a combination of Margaret Williamson Hospital, No.1 Hospital of China Red Cross and the Pediatric Department of Zhongshan Hospital, and it was the first public hospital financially supported by the government after the founding of People’s Republic of China, with 80 beds and a yearly treatment capacity of 20,000 patients. Thanks to the great efforts made by generations, the Hospital now has over 500 beds and treats 1.2 million patients every year, and has become a top hospital in China offering medical care, education and research. The hospital is particularly strong in areas including infant treatment, pediatric surgery, pediatric first aid, pediatric cardiovascular, and pediatric infectious diseases. The success of separation operation on the Siamese twins and liver and kidney transplantation operations are all influential at home and abroad.

The Fudan-HSBC Economics Lectures on Chinese Economy Prospect
On November 26, the Fudan-HSBS Economics Lectures organized by Fudan University and HSBS (China) was held at Fudan University. Dr. Qi Bin, Director of China Securities Regulatory Commission, delivered the keynote speech entitled “The Imbalance in Chinese Economy and Capital Price Fluctuation”.
By inviting world-renowned economists to give lectures on campus, Fudan-HSBS Economics Lectures aims at enhancing the international exchanges in the field of economics and improving the overall quality of the faculty and students in economics and finances at Fudan. This year, seven economists with worldwide reputation joined the program and gave lectures to Fudan students.

Fudan Launches Yangtze River Delta Region Institute
On Nov 29, the opening ceremony of Yangtze River Delta (YRD) Region Institute of Fudan University was held at Fudan. Prof. Pan Shiwei, Deputy Director of Dept. of Publicity, CPC Shanghai Committee, together with Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode unveiled the name plaque. In the following “Yangtze River Delta Region Development Forum”, experts and scholars exchanged ideas on YRD region cooperation and linkage for integration development.
In recent years, it has been a national strategy to promote integration development for Yangtze Delta Region, which is also essential for Shanghai to promote the process of “four leads” task, to accelerate the construction of “four centers”. The establishment of YRD Region Institute is a significant move for Fudan to better service Shanghai, YRD Region and the whole country as a think-tank.

President Wang Shenghong Attends UN SG’s Global Colloquium of University Presidents
At the joint invitation of United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon and the presidents of five New York-area universities, i.e., New York University, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, and Princeton University, President Wang Shenghong attended the third meeting of the Secretary-General’s Global Colloquium of University Presidents held in New York from Nov. 27 to 30.
Presidents of 25 leading research universities from around the world are invited to discuss global climate change, a topic of crucial importance to the United Nations and the international community. This year’s conference was co-sponsored by the five New York-area universities. Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon joined for several sessions and chaired one panel discussion. President Wang Shenghong and the former President of Tsinghua University were the only two representatives of Chinese universities invited to the conference. President Wang delivered a speech entitled “Facing the Grant Challenge of Climate Changes: the Role of Universities” on the Conference.
Having held previous conferences on important topics such as academic freedom and confronting world poverty, the Global Colloquium is evolving into a growing network of university presidents who contribute – through research and teaching and other activities – to the solution of some of the global public policy problems that the world now confronts. In 2006, President Wang was invited to the second UN SG’s Global Colloquium of University Presidents called on by then UN SG Kofi Annan.

Fudan Prof. Yang Yuliang Awarded HLHL Prize
On Oct. 31, Fudan faculty Prof. Yang Yuliang was awarded 2007 Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize (HLHL Prize) for Scientific and Technological Progress at HLHL Foundation Conference in Beijing. At present were Academician Lu Yongxiang, Vice Chairman of Standing Committee of National People’s Congress, State Councilor Chen Zhili, and Li Xiangui, Vice Chairman of CPPCC.

Academician Li Daqian Wins HUA Loo-Keng Mathematics Award
On Nov 2, Academician Professor Li Daqian from Fudan was awarded HUA Loo-Keng Mathematics Award on the 10th National Representative Conference and 2007 annual meeting for Chinese Mathematical Society. Academician Yan Jia’an, a mathematician in probability from CAS shared this award with Prof. Li.
HUA Loo-Keng Mathematics Award was set up in 1991 and has been awarded to two Chinese mathematicians who have made the most significant contributions in mathematical research and mathematical education every two years. It is regarded as the life achievement award in Chinese mathematical society.

On Nov 22, Prof. Wang Anyi from Fudan Chinese Language and Literature Department was re-elected Chair of Shanghai Writers’ Association (SWA) at its first meeting of the 8th Council. Wang Zhongwei, Standing Member and Director of Dept. of Publicity of CPC Shanghai Committee, attended the meeting and delivered a congratulation speech. Prof. Wang remarked to the media that teaching experience at Fudan helps to explore literature creation. Another Fudan faculty member Prof. Chen Sihe was elected Vice Chair of SWA.

PI Appointment Ceremony Held by IBS
On Nov. 23, an appointment ceremony for Principal Investigator (PI) was held by Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBS) at Fudan medical campus. Academician Prof. He Lin, Dean of IBS, presented certificates to and addressed the four newly appointed PIs: Shi Yang, Xie Youhua, Zeng Pingyao and Wang Xuanyi. Also at present were Prof. Yang Pengyuan, Executive Vice Dean of IBS, and Vice Dean Prof. Bao Zhihong.
It is learned that high-level researcher introduction is always of much importance to development strategy for IBS. Since Dec 2004 IBS has successfully recruited 10 full-time and 8 part-time PIs from worldwide.

On November 2, 2007, Ms Maud Olofsson, Swedish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Enterprise and Energy, visited School of Public Health of Fudan University and attended the opening ceremony of the Sino-Swedish Research and Development Centre for Food Safety, Nutrition and Health.
The centre has a background of a fruitful cooperation between Swedish and Chinese scientists of Ume? University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Lund University and Fudan University. The main areas of the centre will be focused on food safety, nutrition, rye cultivation project, environmental monitoring and primary health.
Executive Vice President of Fudan University Prof. Wang Weiping had a friendly meeting with Ms Maud Olofsson and the delegation prior to the opening ceremony. Prof. Jiang Qingwu, Dean of School of Public Health, and Prof. Jin Taiyi also attended the meeting.

Visit by Delegation from University of Toronto, Canada
On Nov. 5, delegation composed of eight members from University of Toronto, Canada led by President Dr. David Naylor visited Fudan University. This visit has contributed great help to facilitate the further cooperation and communication between the two universities.
In the morning, related faculty from School of Pharmacy, School of Life Science and Department of Environmental Science and Engineering introduced general development in these fields and the research results gained. They also introduced the future plans in the related fields in the coming years. Both parties exchanged their opinions about development of subjects as well.
In the noon, President Wang Shenghong cordially met with the members of the delegation from University of Toronto in the Yifu Building of Science and Technology.
In the afternoon, President Dr. David Naylor who was former Director of Medical School of University of Toronto introduced the learning conditions of medical schools and the current situations of medical systems in Canada to the teachers and students from Medical College Fudan. He also answered questions raised by interested Fudan students.

Delegation from School of Medicine of Johns Hopkins University Visits Fudan’s Institute of Biomedical Sciences
On the morning of Nov. 6, delegation from School of Medicine was invited to participate in a seminar with representatives from Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Fudan University. Prof. John D. Gearhart, Prof. Jeremy Sugarman, Prof. Linzhao Cheng, Prof. Honhjun Song and Prof. Yang Lu from Johns Hopkins University, and Secretary Mr. Bao Zhihong, Vice Director Tang Qiqun and Prof. Sun Fengyan from Institute of Biomedical Sciences also attended the seminar.
Vice Director Tang Qiqun introduced nine institutes/centers of Fudan Institute of Biomedical Sciences and the current situation of the construction of Institute of Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering. Participants had a heated discussion on development of stem cells research in Fudan Institute and nationwide. After the seminar, members of the delegation visited the laboratory of Institute of Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering which was under construction with enthusiasm. They also highly appreciated the efforts Fudan has made in the stem cells research.
Institute of Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering is jointly constructed by the Institute and Shanghai Fudan Medical College and is now at construction stage. Extensive cooperation with institutions and companies that have already achieved international accomplishments in stem cells research was expected in future.

Visit by Vice-Chancellor Bill Macmillan of University of East Anglia, UK
On November 7, President Wang Shenghong met with Prof. Bill Macmillan, Vice-Chancellor of University of East Anglia, UK. The delegation also visited, during Nov. 6 to 8, Fudan Department of Environment Science and Engineering and had an in-depth discussion with Dean Chen Jianmin, Vice Dean Yang Xin, Prof. Dong Wenbo and Prof. Wang Xiangrong about energy saving, reducing emission, joint degrees, exchange of faculty, and design and construction of ecological building. Prof. Mamillian also had a tour to the atmosphere chemistry lab, urban ecology lab and new Jiangwan campus.
University of East Anglia is a renowned university especially strong in environmental science, with its atmosphere environment research among the top of the world. During the meeting, Prof. Macmillan expressed his wish to cooperate with Fudan in the field of ecological environment. President Wang Shenghong introduced briefly Fudan’s research results in environmental science and hoped to have concrete cooperation in the future.

Visit by Delegation from Université de Montréal, Canada
On the morning of Nov. 8, Vice President Martha Crago, who is in charge of international exchange affairs and Director of Graduate School, Louise Beliveau from Université de Montréal, Canada, visited Fudan University. Vice President, Dr. Xu Zheng courteously visited Vice President Martha Crago and her delegation.
The main purpose of Vice President Martha Crago’s visiting was to consolidate the fruitful results of President Dr. Luc Vinet’s visit to Fudan University in early 2007. Meanwhile, Vice President Martha Crago also wanted to improve the cooperation and exchanges between Université de Montréal and Fudan University, to facilitate the agreement-signing about graduate students of Fudan University going to Université de Montréal for doctorate degree programmes with support from CSC.
During the visit, Vice President Martha Crago and Doctor Louise Beliveau particularly went to the Graduate School to introduce the current doctorate-degree programmes in Université de Montréal in detail. They also answered some questions posed by our students.
Vice President Martha Crago said that Université de Montréal warmly welcomes students from Fudan University to go there for further study.

Rector of Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico Visits Fudan
On November 12, a delegation from Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico led by Rector José Martínez Vilchis visited Fudan. Professor Chen Yinzhang, Assistant President and Director of the Foreign Affairs Office, met with Rector José Martínez Vilchis and had friendly talks with the guests.
Rector José Martínez Vilchis showed great interests in establishing partnership with Fudan in the future, and knowing about Fudan’s experience in innovation and the industrialization of research findings.
Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico is a renowned state university located in Mexico with a long history and outstanding reputation in Latin America.

Visit by the Delegation of Nordic Council of Ministers
On November 13, a delegation from Nordic Council of Ministers headed by Mr. Jan Vapaavuori, Finnish Minister of Housing, visited Fudan University and had a meeting with Fudan leadership as well as representatives from the Nordic Centre. President Wang Shenghong welcomed the delegation and introduced Fudan University’s international cooperation. Discussions on the exchange and cooperation between China and Nordic countries were held. Minister Vapaavuori expressed his wish to promote the image of all five Nordic countries as a whole to China. He also expressed his wish for more bilateral exchange programs between Fudan University and Nordic Universities. President Wang welcomed this kind of cooperation.
The Nordic Council of Ministers, formed in 1971, is the forum for Nordic governmental co-operation. Overall responsibility for the Nordic Council of Ministers lies with the respective Prime Ministers. In practice, responsibility is delegated to the Ministers for Nordic Co-operation (MR-SAM) and to the Nordic Committee for Co-operation (NSK), which co-ordinates the day-to-day work of the official political Nordic co-operation. The Chairmanship of the Council of Ministers, which is held for a period of one year, rotates between the five Nordic countries. Decisions made in the Council of Ministers are unanimous. In 2007 the chairmanship is held by Finland, in 2008 Sweden will take over.

The Trustee of Fudan University, founder of Hongkong University of Science and Technology, Prof. Chia-Wei Woo Visits Fudan University
On the evening of Nov.14, the former founding president of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Prof. Woo Chia-Wei was invited by Fudan Students’ Union to give a lecture on Fudan Star Forum and to discuss higher education with Fudan students. Later that day, Prof. Chia-Wei Woo had a heated discussion with the students on the topic of higher education, such as the relation between the school and the community, study at the universities in Hong Kong, concepts and practices of general education, teaching and research in higher education, the right attitude towards studying aboard, and business-related majors.

Macquarie University Discusses Cooperation about Dual-Doctorate Degree Programme with Fudan
On the morning of Nov. 15, Prof. Jim Piper, Vice President of Macquarie University, Australia, together with his delegation, visited Fudan University. Vice President Dr. Xu Zheng cordially met with the delegation.
The main purpose of Prof. Piper’s visiting was to facilitate the agreement-signing about graduate students of Fudan University going to Macquarie University to study doctorate degree programnes with the support of CSC. He suggested that students who go to study at Macquarie University obtain dual-doctorate degrees of both Macquarie and Fudan University. Vice President Dr. Xu Zheng expressed her warm welcome toward Prof. Jim Piper’s suggestions.

Chief Spokesman Frederic Eckhard of Koffi Annam Attends the “United Nations Forum” at Fudan University
On November 16, Mr. Frederic Eckhard, Chief Spokesman of the Former Secretary-General Koffi Annam at United Stations, was invited to deliver a speech on “The Truth of the United Nations and Iraq” at Fudan University, by Center for United Stations and International Organization Studies. Ambassador Chen Jian, Director of the Center, presided over the lecture.
Mr. Frederic Eckhard joined the United Nations in 1985 and was Chief Spokesperson of Former Secretary General of United Nations for eight years.

Fudan Medical Dean Meets with Basel Delegation of the Switzerland
A delegation led by Dr. Carlo Conti, Minister of Health in Basel of Switzerland, visited Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University. Dean Prof. Feng Xiaoyuan met with the delegation which included Mr. William Frei, Consul General of the Switzerland in Shanghai, Ms. Sabine Horvath, Chief PR Officer of Basel, Dr. Kong Xianchu, Director of Chinese Affairs of Basel. Also present were Vice Dean Prof. Yuan Zhenghong and Prof. Zou Hejian from Shanghai Medical College.
It was the third visit for Dr. Conti to Shanghai, with a purpose to sign the agreement of sister cities with Shanghai municipality and to explore cooperation in economy, life sciences, higher education, culture and sports, and to discuss its participation in Shanghai 2010 World Expo. Prof. Feng Xiaoyuan and Dr. Conti agreed to have a joint research seminar in Basel in March 2008. Both of them hoped for a fruitful cooperation in the field of medical research and teaching in the future.

Members of the American National Academy of Science Visits the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of Fudan
On November 5, Professor Arnold J. Levine, member of the US National Academy of Science, visited the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of Fudan University. Famous for his discovery of p53 tumor suppressor protein, Professor Arnold J. Levine is a renowned professor at Princeton University and a leading researcher in the field of cancer biology. Professor Arnold J. Levine delivered a lecture entitled “Single Neucleotide Polymorphism in the p53 Pathway” to the faculty and students at Fudan.
On November 20, Professor Marc W. Kirschner, member of the US National Academy of Science, visited the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of Fudan and delivered a lecture entitled “Proteolysis and Cell Cycle”. Professor Marc W. Kirschner is Chair of Department of Systems Biology at the Medical School of Harvard. He is also Member of the American National Academy of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society of London and the Academia Europaea. He has served on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health and as President of the American Society for Cell Biology. Dr. Kirschner’s laboratory investigates three broad, diverse areas: regulation of the cell cycle, the role of cytoskeleton in cell morphogenesis, and mechanisms of establishing the basic vertebrate body plan.
On November 22, Professor Britton Chance, Member of the American National Academy of Science visited the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of Fudan and delivered a lecture entitled “Brain Cognition and Breast Cancer Detection Studied by Optical Methods”. Professor Britton Chance is a Professor at University of Pennsylvania, a member of the American National Academy of Science, a member of the Swedish National Academy of Science, a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in London, a member of American Philosophic Society and an Olympian of the U. S. Yacht Olympic team. Britton is an author of over 1,300 original scientific publications and his research field covers biochemistry, biophysics, physical chemistry and radiological physics.

The Canadian Consul General in Shanghai Delivers Speech in Fudan University
On the afternoon of Nov. 21, Canadian consul general in Shanghai Madame Susan Gregson delivered a speech on the topic of “Canadian Foreign Policy: Opportunities for Canada and China” in the Center for American Studies. Around one hundred teachers and students attended the lecture and consulted Madame Gregson on the hot topics in Sino-Canada relationship.
Madame Gregson is a senior Canadian diplomat with rich working experience. She studied in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Fudan University from 1979 to 1980. Before the speech, Prof. Chen Yinzhang, Assistant President and Director of Foreign Affairs Office, Prof. Shen Dingli, Executive Vice Director of Institute of International Affairs and Director of Center for American Studies jointly met Madame Gregson. They had a friendly and cordial conversation with each other.
After the speech, staff from the Canadian Consulate in Shanghai also introduced Sino-Canada academic exchange programs to our teachers and students.

Visit by the President of ParisTech
The newly elected President of ParisTech Prof. Effenterre visited Fudan on November 23 and met with Fudan Vice President Chen Xiaoman. ParisTech was recently approved by the French government as an institute composed of ten engineering schools. Prof. Effenterre expressed his support to the cooperation between Fudan and ParisTech and discussed the Chinese-French Engineering program and Fudan-ParisTech Financial Mathematics program with Fudan faculty.

The Netherlands Government Delegation Visits Fudan
Former Prime Minister of the Netherlands Ruud Lubbers, visited Fudan Medical Campus with a delegation from Rotterdam on November 23. They audited a report about the “Joint Project on the Long-term Healthcare of Changfeng Community” between Fudan University and Erasmus University Medical Center and their future cooperation plan.
After Prof. Wang Xiaoling, Vice President of Fudan, welcomed the delegates, Deputy Director of Shanghai Health Bureau Mr. Wang Xiaoqiang introduced the healthcare system in Shanghai communities. Dr. Zhu Chouwen, Deputy Director of Fudan Foreign Affairs Office, introduced Fudan University focusing on the extensive cooperation between Fudan and universities and research institutes in the Netherlands. Experts from EMC recalled the history of the cooperation with Fudan, especially the “Rotterdam Study” Project that EMC experts participated. Vice Director of Zhongshan Hospital Gao Xin proposed the future plan.
Mr. Lubbers listened with great interest and pointed out the importance of such cooperation between universities and cities.
On November 24 and 25, the working session of Fudan and EMC continued and a workshop was held for students.

Visit by Aizu University Delegation
On November 27, Fudan Vice President Jin Li met with Aizu University Delegation headed by President Prof. Tsunoyama. The two parties discussed the bilateral exchange and cooperation programs. Located in Aizu-Wakamatsu City, Aizu University is specialized in science and technology and excels in electrical engineering and IT technology. Fudan University and Aizu University signed an agreement on bilateral exchange and cooperation in 2006.
