ALUMNI
Chicago Alumni Association Members Visits Alma Mater
On Dec. 7, Chair of Fudan Alumni Association in Chicago Shi Yu and four alumni visited Fudan University and were warmly welcomed by Director of Fudan Department of Liaison and Development Ms. Zhang Honglian.
Ms. Zhang Honglian and her staff reviewed the 10th World Alumni Association Assembly in Nanchang in October. In return Mr. Shi Yu updated the office with the recent activities of the Chicago Alumni Association and commented that with the continuous increase in the number of the oversea alumni of Fudan University, alumni associations in the United States of America are developing year by year and initiating more activities.
This trip by Mr. Shi Yu also brought the second donation made by the alumni in Chicago to Ma Dong, a Fudan alumnus who was suffering from serious illness.

CONFERENCE
Seminar on Construction of United Market in Yangtze Delta Jointly Held by Fudan and SHEC
On December 1, an International Seminar on the Development of Yangtze Delta was held at Shanghai International Convention Center. Among its four sub forums, a sub forum focused on Construction of United Market in Yangtze Delta was hosted jointly by Fudan University and Shanghai Economic Commission (SHEC). The forum was presided by Mr. Chen Haigang, Deputy Director of SHEC and Fudan Vice President Prof. Gui Yonghao.
Chancellor Qin Shaode attended the forum and delivered a speech. Functioning as an engine to Chinese Economy, Yangtze Delta Region, as proposed, shall develop a united and normative market to lay a solid foundation for the regional development.
More than 200 representatives from national commissions, provincial leaders and Delta enterprises participated in the forum. Prof. Liu Hongzhong, Chair of Fudan Finance Dept. made a keynote speech on the topic.

ChemComm Seminar Held at Fudan
The First Royal Society of Chemistry, UK, ChemComm Shanghai Seminar was held on December 14, 2007, sponsored by RSC and operated by the team of Prof. Jin Guoxin of Fudan Chemistry Department.
The Seminar attracted professors from Fudan University, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai University and researchers from Unilever. On the topic of polymer and polymer science, Prof. Heather Maynard from UCLA, Prof. Rowan from Nijmegen University, Prof. Haddleton from Warwick University, Prof. Zhao Dongyuan from Fudan and Academician Yan Deyue from Chinese Academy of Science delivered quality speeches. At the end of the Seminar, Dr. Sarah Thomas, Editor Chief of ChemComm gave a detailed introduction on “How to publish on RSC Journal”, which caught the attention of many graduate students.
This Seminar is not only a channel to introduce RSC to Chinese scientists but also provides an opportunity for communication between Chinese professors, graduate students, professionals and editors from RSC.

International Conference on Viewing China from Bordering Countries
From December 17 to 19, International Conference on Viewing China from Bordering Countries was held at Fudan University co-hosted by National Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Fudan University and Kansai University in Japan, National University of Singapore and City University of Hong Kong.
Close to forty researchers and scholars attended the conference, including 17 from foreign nations and 7 from Hong Kong and Taiwan, which granted the conference a global vision on the topics of discussion, including “The Universe, World and China”, “Observing from the Western Point of View”, “Asia: China and Japan”, “Seeing China from Vietnam” and “Seeing China from Korea”. The theses presented on this conference will be complied and published later.
“Viewing China from Bordering Countries” is a direction of research that has been encouraged by the National Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Fudan, as it was founded in March 2007 in the hope of bringing in new motivation and perspectives to the research on the history and culture of China.

The First Fudan-Waseda Journalism Symposium Held at Fudan
The First Fudan-Waseda Journalism Symposium was recently held at School of Journalism of Fudan University. Associate Vice President Professor Chen Yinzhang, Dean of Journalism School Professor Zhao Kai; Vice Dean of School of Political Science and Economics, Waseda University, Professor Sato, and Dean of Institute of Political Science and Economics, Waseda University, Professor Tanifuji, attended the meeting and delivered speeches. The Symposium, focused on The New Media and Social Changes, attracted heated discussion among the scholars on the influence of the new media development on lifestyle and people’s way of thinking.
Waseda University and Fudan University decided to further nurture their bilateral relationship during the 11th APRU President Meeting, May 2007. The two universities planned to hold The Second Fudan-Waseda Journalism Symposium at Waseda University in the summer of 2008.

COOPERATION
The 1st Sail-Around-the-World Higher Education Program Arrives In Shanghai
On Dec. 7, the first sail-around-the-world higher education program, The Scholar Ship – A University Campus at Sea, arrived in Shanghai, carrying over 200 students from 35 countries and regions around the world. They were having a seven-day “Shanghai week” exploration. The Scholar Ship departed from Athens Greece on Sept. 5, passing Lisbon of Portugal, Panama, Guayaquil of Ecuador, The Pacific Tahiti Island, Auckland of New Zealand and Sydney of Australia. Shanghai is the eighth stop of its voyage, after which it would sail to the terminal port Hong Kong.
This 201-meter long Ship is specially designed for this educational program equipped with all kinds of campus facilities including a library, self-study rooms, classrooms, discussion rooms, gyms as well as a 200-people multi-functional hall, which makes it a functioning campus at sea. The program aims to pool the world-class education resources and create a multi-national learning community, helping the students to form an international vision and forge the values, and training students’ cross culture abilities and leadership capacity. Fudan University is the only university chosen in China to take part in this program in 2007. Seven students from School of Economics, School of Management, School of Journalism, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of International Relations and Public Affairs joined the Scholar Ship on board this year.
Upon its arrival, Fudan Associate Vice President Prof. Chen Yinzhang and faculty from related departments went on board to greet Fudan and international students. More than 200 students from The Scholar Ship visited Fudan University the next day.

Georgetown University China Office Established on Fudan Campus
On Dec. 12, Prof. James O’Donnell, Vice President and Provost of Georgetown University, one of the strategic partners of Fudan University, led a large delegation to Fudan University and attended the opening ceremony of Georgetown University China Office, which is located on Fudan campus. Fudan President Prof. Wang Shenghong delivered a welcome address and expressed congratulations to the guests. Prof. James O’Donnell presided over the ceremony and bestowed books to the Center for American Studies on behalf of Georgetown University. Before the ceremony, Prof. O’Donnell also delivered a brilliant speech to faculty and students in Center for American Studies. Discussions on cooperative affairs between the two universities followed the event.
This May, President Wang Shenghong visited Georgetown University, signing an agreement with President John J. DeGioia of Georgetown on cooperation, according to which both universities will develop exchange programs and cooperative projects in law, general education, public health, nursing, journalism, international relations, public policy and post-doctorate programs. In order to facilitate the cooperation between the two universities, Georgetown University established its China Office in the Center for American Studies of Fudan University. The office is also the first liaison office established by Georgetown University in China.
On the same day, the first meeting of the Advisory Committee of Fudan-Georgetown was held. Fudan Vice President Prof. Gui Yonghao, Prof. Chen Yingzhang, Associate Vice President and Director of Foreign Affairs Office and other faculty and staff from Fudan Law School and School of International Affairs and Public Relations attended the meeting. The two parties discussed ways to implement the cooperative and exchange programs in detail and looked forward to further development.

“Colorful Green”: The Sixth Environmental Festival at Fudan
On December 1, 2007, “Colorful Green – the Sixth Environmental Festival at Fudan University” marked its beginning with the traditionally popular event of “Seeing Shanghai on bicycle”. In order to highlight the keynote of green city for green Olympics in 2008, this year’s Environmental Festival uses the color green to thread up all the activities: “Green ride – See Shanghai on Bicycle”, “Enjoy Green – Environmental Films Week”, “Contemplate Green – Seminar on Environmental Protection Projects”, “Discuss Green – Environmental Protection Forum”, “Paint Green – ‘Protect Our Mother Earth’ Painting Exhibition”, “Chase Green – Inter-department Sports activities” and so on.
The “See Shanghai on Bicycle” event has been the highlight of each year’s Environmental Festival. This year, the participants intend to spread the notion of “non-vehicle transportation”, which echoes with slogan of “Green Olympics” of 2008.

Fudan Invited to Celebrate 120 Years of Medical Education of HKU
At the invitation of Professor Hin-suen Liang, Acting Dean of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong, Fudan Executive Vice President Prof. Wang Weiping and Fudan Dean of Medical School Prof. Feng Xiaoyuan visited the Hong Kong University and attended the celebration of the 120th Anniversary of the establishment of Medical Education of HKU as well as the 70th Anniversary of Queen Mary Hospital.
As a strategic partner of Fudan University, the University of Hong Kong has a 20-year history of cooperation with Fudan Medical School.
During the meeting between Fudan delegates and the hosts, Professor Sau-man IP, Associate Dean of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine and Prof. Wang reviewed the long-term bilateral cooperation and exchanged ideas on curriculum reforms of medical education system, teaching in English, evidence-based medicine and continuing education. Medical schools of the two universities are going to sign a collaborative agreement to guarantee and promote the future cooperation.
In the evening of Dec 14, a banquet to celebrate the 120 Years of Medical Education of HKU was held in Hong Kong New Convention & Exhibition Center. More than 2,000 guests participated, including HKSAR Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuren, Mr. Henry Tang Ying-yen, HKSAR Chief Secretary for Administration, and Deputy Director of Chinese Ministry of Health.
From Dec 12 to 14, Prof. Wang Weiping and Prof. Feng Xiaoyuan also attended the seminars hosted by The University of Hong Kong on Frontiers in Medical Education and Frontiers in Biomedical Research.

2006~2007 Guanghua Scholarship Awarding Ceremony Held
On Dec 21, 2006~2007 Guanghua Scholarship Awarding Ceremony was held. 244 excellent students were awarded “Guanghua Scholarship” this year, among which 128 students were doctor candidates, 98 master candidates and 18 undergraduates.
Vice President of Fudan University and Secretary General of Fudan University Education Development Foundation (FUEDF) Dr. Xu Zheng, together with faculty from related schools and departments attended the ceremony. Representative of Guanghua Education Foundation and Assistant of President of Runtime Industry Group Mr. Jia Ning presented the awards to the students, together with Fudan University leadership.
Guanghua Foundation was set up by Mr. Nan Huaijin, master of Chinese Studies, in 1989, aiming at promoting Chinese literature and culture and encouraging students to develop themselves as all-round talents for the development of China. Guanghua Scholarship was offered at Fudan in 1990 and the following 18 years. Compared with all the other scholarship sponsored by social resources, Guanghua Scholarship ranks the first in terms of beneficiaries. So far, altogether 4,199 students with academic merits have been awarded Guanghua Scholarship, among which 472 are undergraduates, 2,499 master candidates, 1,229 doctor candidates, and 151 minority students.

Three Books by Fudan University Press Win the Chinese Government Publishing Awards
Recently published by Fudan University Press, History of Population in China, 6 volumes edited by Prof. Ge Jianxiong and Talks on Special Topics by Specialists, 30 volumes edited by Prof. Zhu Weizheng and Prof. Ge Zhaoguang among the others, won Nomination for the First Chinese Government Publishing. In addition, A Selection of French Poems was awarded Best Graphic Design Award in the same competition. Fudan University Press therefore became the only university press in Shanghai honored in this contest. Earlier, A New Collection of Studies on the History of Old Five Dynasties edited by Prof. Chen Shangjun was awarded Excellent Publishing Award of China (Book Section).
The Chinese Government Publishing Award is a new version of the former National Book Award while the Excellent Publishing Award of China evolved from China Book Award. Fudan University Press has been a frequent winner of these awards and beats most universities presses in China in winning records.

Four Projects from Fudan Win Awards at China International Industry Fair 2007
Four projects from Fudan University were awarded at China International Industry Fair 2007 held at Shanghai New International Exhibition Center from November 6 to November 10. Two of the four projects are from the field of medical sciences while the other two were from the field of chemistry and advanced material science respectively.

Breakthrough in MOE Key Projects in Humanities and Social Sciences
2007 Ministry of Education Key Projects in humanities and social sciences were released recently. With 6 approvals out of 12 applications, Fudan ranked No. 1 among all the applicant universities nationwide. Fudan disciplines in humanities and social sciences made historic breakthrough in this national project application. To serve the nation and society, all the 6 approved projects are in line with important current issues, they are Maxim development in recent China, energy saving and emission reduction for environmental protection, new rural cooperative medical system improvement, reform on household system, overall employment arrangement in urban and rural areas, mass media and social risk management.

Report on 2006 China Informal Employment Development Published
The publication ceremony of Report on 2006 China Informal Employment Development, which is one of the most important research results of the project “China Informal Employment Studies”, was held at Fudan University. Prof. Ren Yuan and Prof. Peng Xizhe were editors-in-chief while writers were a dozen of scholars from School of Social Development and Public Policy, School of Economics and other institutes. Nearly 20 renowned experts from 10 well-known institutes were invited to edit the book, including Research Institute of Development studies of Sussex University, Kenny School of Harvard University, Institute of Population and Labor Economics (CASS), School of Labor and Human Resources of and Renmin University.
This research result is worked out by the whole research team after in-depth research and frequent discussions for a year and a half. This is the first academic work on systematical analysis of informal employment development in China. This book covers a wide range of areas, background of informal employment under the globalization and social transformation, characteristics and quantity of informal employment, contributions made by informal employment, case studies and successful models of informal employment. Further more, creative analyses of informal employment cover topics including gender problem, poverty problem, public administration and public policy.
On the ceremony, Prof. Ren Yuan introduced the main research results and new ideas toward China labor market and employment tendency from the view of informal employment. He mentioned that with the rapid development of informal employment, employment statistics, employment management and related social policies shall be improved. Prof. Peng Xizhe pointed out that the studies of informal employment are not only meaningful and influential theoretically but also practical. A scholar from India illustrated experience and cases in the speech on the ceremony, commenting on the significance of the research on informal employment in both China and India.

Fudan VP Elected Vice Chairman of CAPD
On the Conclusion Session of the 10th National Congress of China Association for Promoting Democracy(CAPD), Prof. Cai Dafeng, Vice President of Fudan University was elected Vice Chairman of CAPD at its 1st session of the 12th central committee.

Fudan Professor Wins China Award for Young Female Scientists
As announced on Dec17 in Beijing, Fudan Prof. Dong Aiwu from School of Life Sciences was presented an award on the 4th Chinese Award for Young Female Scientists.
Another 4 female scientists of life sciences were also presented the award. At present at the award ceremony was Ms. Gu Xiulian, Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and President of the All-China Women’s Federation.
As a yearly award initiated by the All-China Women’s Federation, China Association for Science and Technology and the China National Committee of UNESCO, and sponsored by L’Oreal China, China Award for Young Female Scientists aims to highlight the great contribution from women to the development of science and technology in China.

Vice Chair of NPC Standing Committee Attends “Master Forum” of School of Management
On the morning of Dec 6, Mr. Cheng Siwei, Vice Chair of National People’s Congress Standing Committee, delivered a speech on “The Situation of Liquidity Surplus and Its Solution” as a guest professor of Fudan School of Management, elaborating his understanding of the concepts proposed by the recent Central Economic Meeting. Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode and Vice President Dr. Xu Zheng attended the Forum together with the participating scholars.
Mr. Cheng Siwei remarked that two guidelines proposed by the Central Economic Meeting, i.e. to prevent economy overgrowth and to prevent obvious inflation caused by high prices, are significant tasks that require rigid implementation to sustain economic growth of next year.
During the speech, Mr. Cheng Siwei also expressed his opinions on RMB exchange rate and Chinese financial market.

Vice President of Tohoku University, Japan Visits Fudan University
President Wang Shenghong of Fudan University met Vice President Hashimoto of Tohoku University, Japan, on December 6. The two presidents exchanged ideas on bilateral academic exchange, campus construction, and international teaching among the others. Fudan Associate Vice President and Director of Foreign Affairs Office Professor Chen Yinzhang also attended the bilateral meeting.
Tohoku University delegates who were scholars in the field of Physics and Mathematics also met with their counterparts from Fudan University and had a good discussion. There are quite a few Tohoku alumni now working at Fudan University and ten of them joined the meeting on the day.
Tohoku University is one of the most prestigious universities in Japan and signed a Bilateral Cooperation and Exchange Agreement with Fudan University in 2004. Both Tohoku University and Fudan University are members of Sino-Japanese University President Forum.

UBC President Visits Fudan
On Dec 10, Professor Stephen J. Toope, President of The University of British Columbia, headed a delegation to Fudan University. President Wang Shenghong received him at Guanghua Towers.
Prof. Toope was delighted to learn the cooperation and communication between UBC and Fudan University, and hoped to strengthen the collaboration on life sciences, medical science, international relations, journalism, economics, management, neuroscience, international law and logistics. He also invited Fudan to send graduate students to UBC for exchange programs.
Fudan and UBC are both member universities of Universitas 21 and APRU. At present, the two Universities have joint researches on management, biology and medicine.
Prof. Chen Yinzhang, Associate Vice President, Prof. Yin Zhiwen, Deputy Dean of Management School, Prof. Xue Jinglun from School of Life Sciences, Prof. Zou Hejian, Deputy Dean of Medical School, Prof. Huang Guoying, Head of Children’s Hospital and Prof. Gong Baihua of Law School also attend the meeting.

British Ambassador to China Speaks at Ambassador’s Forum
Sir William Ehrman, British Ambassador to China, was invited as the guest speaker of “Ambassador’s Forum” on December 11, 2007. President Wang Shenghong met with Sir Ehrman and Carma Elliot, British Council General in Shanghai, in School of Economics, and talked about Sino-British cooperation in Education and Science.
The Forum was hosted by Mr. Mei Zhaorong, former Chinese Ambassador to Germany and Honorary Professor of Fudan. Sir Ehrman spoke on “ China and Britain: Growing Partners in Scientific Development” in fluent Chinese, introducing the many achievements resulting from the Sino-British collaboration in trade, investment, aviation, communication, energy, medicine, engineering, environmental protection, education, etc. He also voiced his proposals to deepen such ties and mutually beneficial partnership. Sir Ehrman emphasized on the open diplomatic policy of Britain and the improvement of bi-lateral relation between China and Europe requires efforts from both sides, that is, EU needs to loosen its trade protectionism and China has to further open its market as well. The students asked various questions regarding the topic after the speech.

Speech by New York City Mayor Bloomberg
On Dec 12, Mr. Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City visited Fudan University and delivered a speech on Competitiveness in Global Economy, during which he shared with Fudan students the six key principles for U.S. and China to sharpen their competitiveness in the global economy. His witty speech was warmly welcomed by the audience who later raised many interesting questions. Before the speech, Mr. Bloomberg was welcomed by Fudan President Wang Shenghong and met with professors in management, economics, journalism, international relations and American studies.

Coordination Representative of United Nations System in China Visits Fudan University
On Dec 13 Mr. Ma Heli, Coordination Representative of United Nations System in China, visited Fudan Institute of International Affairs, accompanied by Mr. Chen Jian, former Vice Secretary-General of United Nations to delivered a speech on “United Nations and the Climate Change” at Fudan Center for American Studies.
As the third session of “UN Research Forum” held by Fudan University, Mr. Ma Heli shared his opinions on the cooperation and development of environmental protection implemented by United Nations and China from the perspective of United Nations Development Program.

Visit by University of Chicago President and Fudan Board Member
On the morning of Dec 20, Prof. Robert J. Zimmer, President of the University of Chicago, together with Mr. Yuan Tianfan, Member of Board of Trustees and Vice President of Pacific Century Regional Developments Ltd. visited Fudan University. Mr. Yuan is also Board member of Fudan University. This was the first visit of President Zimmer to China, with the main objective as to visit prestigious universities of China and to explore possibilities of future exchange and communication.
Fudan Vice President Prof. Chen Xiaoman received President Zimmer and Mr. Yuan in a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere, introducing the current situation of scientific research and international exchange of Fudan University. Faculty and staff related from Fudan Academy of Mathematical Science, School of Life Sciences, Department of Physics, School of Economics, School of Management, Department of Science and Technology and Foreign Affairs Office also attended the meeting.
The University of Chicago is a world-renowned university that has nurtured many masters and Nobel laureates, including Professor Roger B. Myerson from Department of Economics, winner of 2007 Nobel Prize. Prestigious scholars such as Prof. C. N. Yang and Prof. T. D. Lee also received their doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago.
President Zimmer himself is a mathematician who received his doctor degree in Mathematics from Harvard University. He was appointed the 13th President of the University of Chicago in 2006.
Fudan President Wang Shenghong also invited President Zimmer and Prof. Roger B. Myerson to attend Shanghai Forum 2008.
