RESEARCH
Fudan’s Research Shows Severe Cadmium Pollution
Recently, the research team on metal toxicology led by Prof. Jin Taiyi of Fudan School of Public Health announced its research result that a certain number of people are susceptible of being exposed to cadmium pollution. Those who may contact cadmium in daily work shall be protected from cadmium toxicology by means of molecular biological methods.
Cadmium is a kind of heavy metal widely used in industries such as smelting, alloy manufacturing, electroplating, glass, paint, photographic materials, light batteries, batteries, and nuclear reactor. With an annual output of 17,000 tons worldwide, cadmium is regarded as a global pollutant and was categorized in 1993 by International Agency for Research on Cancer as a cancer-causing element. With the recent rise of electronic industry, demand of Electronic materials and products including Ni-Cd batteries, transistors and semiconductor are soaring, which brought more people exposed to cadmium on daily basis during work.
Sponsored by China, European Union and Sweden, the research team started from project “Kidney Scathe Caused by Cadmium” and completed research on “Metallothionein, Anti-MT Ab, and Cadmium Scathe on Health” after long, successful in explaining the dose-effect relationship between the first two and the third.
This leading research by international level on cadmium pollution was awarded Second Prize of Science and Technology by China Preventive Medicine Association and Prof. Jin Taiyi was awarded the title of “Outstanding Science and Technology Expert” by the same association.
Cadmium could bring serious harm people’s health. It accumulates in human bodies and stays for lifelong, posing threats from time to time to kidney, bone, reproductive organs and the immunity system and eventually leading to cancer. Statistics showed that sixteen provinces and municipalities in China have reported notable impact of Cadmium on environment and on people’s health.
Metallothionein widely exists in human bodies and regulates the balance of Zn and Cu. Research shows that when people are exposed to Cadmium either directly or indirectly, the quantity of metallothionein will increase. The combination of metallothionein and cadmium will reduce toxic effects on people’s bodies. However, there is a small number of population whose bodies release a small amount of metallothionein when receiving cadmium and therefore categorized as “vulnerable population to cadmium toxic”
Research also discovers that metallothionein and anti-MT Ab can serve as specific biomarkers to identify the vulnerable population to cadmium toxic” and hence provide an effective way of protecting the vulnerable population from poisoning.

Research Progress for Congenital Deaf Children
A blessing for congenitally deaf children came recently that Fudan professors made breakthrough on hearing impairment in both medical and sociological researches. Member of the Chinese Academy of Science Prof. Wang Zhengmin from EENT Hospital Affiliating to Fudan University spent almost ten years with his team on hearing impairment research and now developed a multiple channel programmed cochlea, a device produced by China but with all the evaluation indexes reaching the international advanced level.
“The congenital hearing impaired population in Shanghai and 130,000 newborn hearing screening”, a social study project led by Prof. Liang Hong, Vice Dean of School of Social Development and Public Policy, won First Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award from Shanghai Municipal Government.
Study shows that the number of congenital deaf-mutes will drop dramatically if with the help of implanted hearing instruments, and the research results by Fudan faculty are expected to grand the congenital deaf children new hope for the ability of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Visit by the Swedish Delegation on Science Reward
On January 10, a Swedish Delegation on Science Reward, led by Professor Anders Flodstrom, Chancellor of Swedish Universities, visited Fudan University. In the delegation were Professor Borje Johansson, member of the Nobel Prize Committee for physics, and Professor Sven Lidin, member of the Nobel Prize Committee for chemistry.
A great number of students attended a lecture given by the delegation who introduced the Nobel Prize history and 2007 prizes in physics and chemistry in particular. The Committee members emphasized that the Nobel Prize serves as an encouragement to scientific innovation for human welfare but should not fall as the only goal for scientific researches, as it was noted that the Nobel laureates were all motivated by their enthusiasm towards the unknown universe. Fame and fortune can never be the objective of science.
Regarding topic of insufficient research capacity among Chinese students, the Committee members suggested enhancement of communication and cooperation abilities. They also encouraged Chinese universities to establish more programs for research in basic sciences so that more young scientists are committed to basic science researches.
Before the lecture, Fudan Chancellor Professor Qin Shaode had a friendly meeting with the delegation. Presentations on Nordic Centre at Fudan University and Sino-Swedish Campus at Fudan Zhangjiang campus, a joint program by Fudan, KTH (Royal Institute of Technology), Chalmers University of Technology and Karolinska Institute, were given to the delegation. Sino-Swedish Campus was established when Professor Anders Flodstrom, Chancellor of Swedish Universities, served as Rector of KTH in 2005 with the aim of a broader cooperation between Fudan and Swedish universities in the areas of micro-electronics, medical informatics, and pharmacies among the others.
