Fudan Alumni Association in North California Witnesses Beijing Olympic Torch Relay in San Francisco
April 9, 2008 (April 10, Beijing time), the global relay of the Olympic torch made its sixth stop in San Francisco, US. Members of the Fudan Alumni Association in North California led by Mr. Lu Bin made their way to San Francisco by bus or train to witness this historic moment. Together with the gathered crowds cheering for the Olympic flame, Fudan alumni proudly flied their own flags and Fudan University flag, among the sea of the Chinese national flags and Olympic flags, expressing their sense of pride for and sincere best wishes to Beijing Olympics 2008.

CONFERENCE
Roundtable on Ph.D. Education and Research Cooperation from a Sino-Nordic Perspective Held
On April 9th, a Roundtable Discussion on Ph.D. Education and Research Cooperation from a Sino-Nordic Perspective was held at Fudan University. Representatives from around 20 Nordic member universities of Nordic Centre at Fudan University as well as several Nordic government organizations related to education and research including Nordforsk, Academy of Finland and Innovation Denmark participated. Representatives from Chinese Ministry of Education and China Scholarship Council were also present. Ample information exchanged and heated discussions on how to further strengthen Ph.D. education and research cooperation were warmly welcome by the participants.

Society for Integrative Oncology Holds International Symposium in Shanghai
Cancer Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center of University of Texas jointly held International Symposium on Combination of Traditional and Modern Oncology recently. The theme of the Symposium is “Integrative Oncology Theory, Research, and Practice”.
On the opening ceremony, Director of Cancer Hospital, Dr. Jiang Guoliang and Dr. David S. Rosenthal from Harvard University, Dr. Lorenzo Cohen from M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Academician of CAS Dr. Chen Keji, Secretary-General of CSCO Dr. Qin Shukui, Vice President of Fudan University Prof.Gui Yonghao and, Chancellor of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Prof. Xie Jianqun delivered speeches.
Prof. Liu Luming, Director of Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine of Cancer Hospital and Prof. Lorenzo Cohen from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center co-chaired the Symposium. Among the 400 specialist attendees, more than 100 participants were from overseas, including Prof. Volker Diehl from Hodgkin Lymphoma Study Group in Germany, Prof. Sun Yan from Chinese Academy of Engineering and Prof. Dennis J. Slamon from UCLA Jonsson Cancer Comprehensive Therapy Center. Speakers were from renowned institutions worldwide, including National Cancer Institute of the United States, Ministry of Science of Technology of China, China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Harvard University, Yale University, Columbia University, Duke University, Stanford University, Cancer Hospital of CAMS, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center of University of Texas and Cancer Hospital affiliated to Fudan University.
SIO is a multi-disciplinary international organization set up by specialists in diverse areas in Medicine, aiming at discovering methods of recovery from cancer treatment and of traditional and modern therapy integration. This International Symposium aims to facilitate the professionals and the practitioners to better understand the development in tradition-modern combined therapy and TCM as well as the scientific essence, clinical results and research methods of tradition-modern combined therapy.

COOPERATION
Fudan Delegation Led by The President Visits Three Canadian Universities
From April 14th to 16th, Fudan President Prof. Wang Shenghong led a university delegation and visited University of Toronto, York University and Queen’s University in Canada. He discussed student exchange programs, present cooperative researches and teaching programs and opportunities of further communication and cooperation with the Canadian universities in the fields of life sciences, environmental science, international relations and art education. On the afternoon of April 15th, Prof. Sheila Embleton, Vice President of York University signed a memorandum of cooperation on double bachelor degree program.

Fudan Graduate Students Win Committee of 100 Talent Award
Two Fudan students, namely Lin Dan, Ph.D candidate at the Institute of Modern Physics and Pan Xiaotian, graduate student at School of Journalism, were awarded The Committee 100 Talent Award at Tsing Hua University on April 8.
Initiated in 2005, The Committee 100 Talent Award aims at supporting morally and academically outstanding young talents in China and enhancing the collaboration with Chinese institutes of higher learning. 28 students from 14 Chinese universities were presented the award together with 10,000 RMB for each.
Founded in 1990, the Committee of 100 is a group of prominent Americans of Chinese origin with the mission to “pool their strings and experience to address important issues concerning the Chinese American community, as well as issues affecting U.S.-China relations”.

1st Prize Won by Fudan Undergraduates at US University Mathematical Modeling Contest
Three undergraduates from Fudan School of Management, Jin Yin, Jin Yannan and Wang Ying coached by Dr. Zhu Zhongyi, became Meritorious Winners at the 2008 US University Mathematical Modeling Contest. This is the best result ever achieved by Fudan participants at this contest.
US (International) University Mathematical Modeling Contest includes the contest in mathematical modeling (MCM) and cross-disciplinary mathematical modeling (ICM). Beginning in 1985, the Contest is organized by US Federation of Mathematics and its Application, and sponsored by US National Science Foundation, US Federation of Mathematics and its Application, US Institute for Operations Research and Management Science and other organizations, is currently the world’s most exclusive international university students mathematical modeling contest. This year, 1,542 teams from 15 countries and regions including USA, Australia, UK and China participated. Since English is the working language of the contest, the participants shall be equipped with not only mathematical modeling of knowledge but also a good command of the language for research paper writing.

Fudan Bio-Medicine Institute Inaugurates Clinical Treatment of Infectious Disease Laboratory
On April 23, the unveiling ceremony of Fudan Clinical Treatment of Infectious Disease Laboratory was held at Shanghai Public Health Center. The ceremony was presided by Professor Yuan Zhenghong, Vice Dean of Fudan Biomedicine Institute. Professor Lu Hongzhou, Vice Director of the Public Health Center and Academician He Lin, Dean of Fudan Biomedicine Institute, delivered speeches.
The Clinical Treatment of Infectious Disease Laboratory is an affiliating organization jointly established by Fudan Biomedicine Institute and Shanghai Public Health Center. The laboratory is located at the Public Health Center and is expected to further upgrade the research level of the two institutions.

The 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Polymer Discipline and The 15th Anniversary of the Founding of Department of Polymer Science at Fudan
April 25 witnessed the celebration ceremony of the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of Polymer Discipline and also the 15th Anniversary of the founding of the Department of Polymer Science at Fudan. Nearly 150 guests, alumni, teachers and students from the Department of Polymer Science attended the ceremony. Special guests includes Mr. Yu Tongyin, 92-year-old founder of polymer discipline, Fudan President Prof. Wang Shenghong, Academician Prof. Zhou Qifeng, President of Jilin University, Academician Prof. Yan Deyue from School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Academician Prof. Jiang Ming from Fudan School of Polymer Science and Prof. Wang Lixiang, Director of Research Fellowship of CAS Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry. Twenty winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund from other colleges, universities and research institutes in the field of polymer science and materials, university representatives and leadership were also invited to the ceremony.
After the celebration, the 2nd Fudan Polymer Forum of Outstanding Youth opened. Academician Prof. Zhou Qifeng, Academician Prof. Yan Deyue and Chief Scientist Han Zhichao delivered keynote speeches. During the two-day Forum, 20 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund were invited to give lectures and share their latest research results and hot issues in the field of polymer.

Leo KoGuan Foundation Donates to Support Educational Development of Fudan University
“Fudan University - Leo KoGuan Foundation Donation Agreement Signing Ceremony & Conferring Ceremony for Honorary Professor of Law School on Mr. Leo KoGuan” was held on Apr. 30th, 2008. Prof. Wang Shenghong, President of Fudan University, Prof. Qin Shaode, Chancellor and Secretary-General of Fudan University Education Development Foundation, Prof. Xu Zheng, Deputy Secretary-General, Vice President of Fudan University as well as teachers and students from related departments attended the ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Pro-vice President Prof. Chen Yinzhang.
On the ceremony, Mr. Leo KoGuan and President Wang Shenghong signed the donation contract, according to which, Mr. Leo KoGuan donates 12.5 million US dollars to support building of “Leo KoGuan Rule of Law Center”, and part of the donation would also be used as scholarship for the students. Right after the signing ceremony, Conferring Ceremony for Honorary Professor of Law School on Mr. Leo KoGuan was held.
Mr. Leo KoGuan received his Master Degree of International Relations from Columbia University and his PHD of Law from New York University. He is the Founder and Chairman of Software House International, United States. He is eager to benefit people all over the world by charity, and in China, he hopes that he may help to elevate education quality of higher education. So far, he has been awarded honorary trustee of Education Foundation, Peking University and Honorary Trustee of Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Visit by University of Oslo Delegation, Norway
On April 3rd, a University of Oslo delegation led by President Geir Ellingsrud visited Fudan University. Members of the delegation included deans of Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Law and heads of a number of departments and affiliating centers.
In the morning, the delegation had a friendly meeting with Fudan President Prof. Wang Shenghong and then discussions on strengthening mutual collaboration with representatives from Fudan Foreign Affairs Office, Nordic Centre at Fudan University, Fudan School of Social Development and Public Policy and Fudan Law School.
In the afternoon, the delegation was divided into groups and visited their Fudan counterparts for more detailed talks on promoting cooperation including exchange students, joint courses, joint researches, and so on.
Founded in 1881, University of Oslo is the oldest and most comprehensive university in Norway.

Visit by Claremont Colleges U.S.A
On the morning of April 3rd, Claremont Colleges Delegation from U.S.A visited Fudan University. The delegates included presidents and scholars from seven colleges in Claremont. President Wang Shenghong cordially received the delegation on campus.
During the meeting, representatives from Fudan introduced the University, exchange programs and cooperative scientific researches of Academy of Mathematical Sciences, Department of Physics, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Information Science and Engineering, School of Management, School of Journalism and School of International Cultural Exchanges to the delegation respectively. President Wang also supplemented the development and current situations of student exchange programs with world prestigious universities, which aroused great interests and responses from the participants.
Members from the delegation raised many questions that interested them to the faculties of Fudan and was impressed by the answers. President Wang sincerely hoped that Fudan would have further communication and cooperation with the colleges in Claremont Colleges Delegation as well.
The seven colleges included in the Claremont Colleges Delegation were Claremont Graduate University, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Keck Graduate Institute, Pitzer College, Pomona College and Scripps College.

Visit by Secretary for Justice of Hong Kong
On April 8, a delegation led by Mr. Wong Yan-lung, Secretary for Justice of Hong Kong, visited Fudan University and was warmly received by President Wang Shenghong. The two parties discussed the strengthening of future bilateral cooperation in the globalization context. Also at present were Mr. Poon Ying Kwong, Deputy Solicitor General for Department of Justice of Hong Kong, Ms. Tai Ka Pui, Administration Assistant to Secretary for Justice, Mr. Patrick Chan, Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai, Government of HKSA, Fudan Prof. Li Changdao, Prof. Zhang Guangjie and Prof. Hu Honggao.
Fudan University has kept a good cooperative relationship with Department of Justice of Hong Kong for long. 244 senior officers in lawsuit and justice from Hong Kong have attended 14 training programs from 1996 to 2000. The comparative study on lawsuit system of Shanghai and Hong Kong, in the form of moot courts and seminars are co-sponsored by School of Law of Fudan University and Department of Justice of Hong Kong.

Visit by Chancellor of University of Turku, Finland
On 10th of April, Prof. Eero Vuorio, Chancellor of University of Turku, Finland, visited Fudan University. As a member of Nordic Centre at Fudan, University of Turku is currently engaged in strengthening cooperation with Fudan. Chancellor Eero Vuorio had a positive meeting with Prof. Jin Li, Vice President of Fudan University and Dean of Fudan School of Life Sciences, to explore research cooperation opportunities and possible exchange activities.

Volvo CEO Attends MasterCard Management Forum
On April 13, Mr. Leif Johansson, President of AB Volvo, CEO of the Volvo Group, attended Fudan MasterCard Management Forum and delivered a speech on “Global Management: Volvo’s Challenges and Responsibilities”. Regarding business performance of Volvo in recent years and its business strategy in various fields and markets, Mr. Leif referred to the essential value of VOLVO as a global corporation and explained Volvo’s corporate culture, i.e. safety, quality and environmental concerns.
As a business leader of the biggest Swedish industrial group, Mr. Leif is an expert on global business transportation solution and is also a legendary figure in Swedish business circle. Mr. Leif is Board Member of both Volvo Group and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, member of Swedish Corporation Association Committee and Swedish Engineering and Architecture Association and Academician of Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.
MasterCard Management Forum has been the communication platform initiated by Fudan School of Management and its major corporation partners.

Nike CEO Consultant Attends Fuon Forum
On April 17, Dr. Joseph Ha, Consultant of Nike Corporation, attended Fuon Forum and was invited by School of Management as part-time professor. He delivered a speech on “American Presidential Election and its Influence on Sino-US Relationship”, analyzing major problems and the bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
Dr. Joseph Ha has been Vice President of Nike Corporation for a long time, and has been Board Member of Nike China, Nike Japan and Nike Korea. Fuon Forum is one part of “Fuon Sports Industry Project”. In 2001, Chinese Olympic Committee, Fudan University and Nike Sports (China) Co., Ltd collaborated and initiated this project after a long-time preparation. This project is the first MBA program targeted at Chinese Olympic Committee and mid-high level management in sports industry, and also holds academic exchange activities including forums and workshops etc.

Speech by Venerable Master Hsing Yun
On April 21, a speech titled “Buddhism Culture and Social Harmony” was given by Venerable Master Hsing Yun at Fudan University and received warm response from the interested audience. The simplified Chinese version of Fo Guang Buddhist Textbook, one of the representative works by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, was published by Shanghai Lexicographical Publishing House on the same day.
As a renowned Chinese Buddhist monk and important figure in modern Mahayana Buddhism, Venerable Master Hsing Yun has dedicated to Buddhism for over sixty years in regulating its practice and propagating its teachings, in making it relevant to modern day society and applicable to daily life, and in spreading its teachings worldwide. One of his distinguished achievements is that the Fo Guang Shan Monastery in major cities around the world now consists of over two hundred branch temples, eighteen art galleries, twenty-six libraries, four publishing houses and four universities.

Visit by French National Center for Scientific Research President
Madam Catherine Bréchignac, President of French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), and Mr. Francois Guinot, President of French National Academy of Engineering, visited Fudan University on April 24. Professor Jin Li, Fudan Vice President received the delegation and discussed future cooperation with Fudan Department of Environmental Science, Department of Bio-Science and Fudan Academy of Mathematics. The delegation also visited the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Material Science at School of Environment Science and Engineering after the meeting.
Established in 1939, CNRS is the biggest science and technology research institution in France and one of the biggest basic sciences research institutions in Europe. It now reports to French Ministry of National Public Education, Research and Technology and has established cooperation with Fudan School of Environmental Science and Technology.

Visit by President of Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
On April 24, a delegation from Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) led by its new President Peter Gudmundson visited Fudan University.
Fudan President Professor Wang Shenghong warmly welcomed the delegation and gave a brief introduction of the University, followed by presentations of Nordic Centre and Sino-Swedish Campus by respective representatives. Sino-Swedish Campus was a joint establishment by Fudan University and three Swedish universities, i.e., KTH, Karolinska Institute and Chalmers University of Technology in 2005 for teaching and research cooperation in the fields of microelectronics engineering, informatics, and medicine among the others. In September 2007, FDU-KTH Joint Master Program in Micro-Nanoelectronics under the framework of Sino-Swedish Campus admitted its first class of 21 students and professors from KTH and Fudan co-teach the program. The program is delivered at Fudan Zhangjiang Campus, but students are also encouraged to spend some time at KTH in Stockholm.
After the formal meeting, President Gudmundson and professors involved in the joint program had a pleasant talk with the students taking the program.
