Fudan University Joins Earthquake Relief

On May 12th, immediately after a severe earthquake happened in Sichuan Province, Fudan faculty and staff started to actively involve in assisting the victims in the disaster-stricken areas, including comforting students from the areas, organizing donation of both assets and blood, and dispatching professional and medical relief teams to the landlocked Sichuan Province.

Statistics showed that homes of 122 students at Fudan, 79 undergraduates and 43 graduates, suffered heavily from the earthquake and Student Administration Office offered emergency financial aid and provided each student with a relief grant of 500 to 1000 CNY. Prof. Chen Limin, Vice President of Fudan University also went to their dorms to comfort them on behalf of the university.

During the following days, Love Relay activities toward disaster relief efforts continued to heat up. Proposals of donation was raised by Staff Unions, Undergraduate Student Union, Graduate Student Union and other various organizations at Fudan University, and donations of currency and relief materials flooded to related office from all over the campus. The University Liaison and Development Office also collected donation from alumni chapters around the world. By the end of May, more than 4 million CNY were raised from faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the university. But this was still not enough as students saw. Nearly 700 of them offered to donate blood either on campus or at municipal blood-collection banks.

All affiliating hospitals of Fudan joined disaster relief as well. A medical rescue team consisting of faculty from Zhongshan hospital, Children’s hospital, Cancer Hospital and Huashan Hospital went to Sichuan Province on May 14 and attended Anxian and Maoxian of Mianyang on May 15 and 16. With two days’ effort, a field hospital was established by Huashang Hospital and China Red Cross in cooperation with German Institute and started operation immediately. In a quite long period of time, this field hospital will replace the local destroyed medical facilities, rescue the injured, and function as a community hospital for more than 250,000 earthquake victims. As to May 26, Fudan University had sent more than 100 doctors and nurses to the disaster areas, more than 20 counselors and public health experts attending the area.

Substrate Selectivity Applies to Akt Published on Cell

Prof. Guan Kunliang and Dr. Zhao Shimin from Fudan University Institute of Biomedical Science published a paper entitled “Substrate Selectivity Applies to Akt” on Cell (Cell 133, May 2, 2008, 399-400), reporting the latest research results of their team on signal transmission and furnished expectations of the future research in this regard.

The research on the differentials in signal transmission is one of the key issues in international academia. Through its signal disposing system, cells can transmit signal produced from exterior stimulations to related protein within them, without changing the functions of other proteins and therefore a type of exterior stimulation will only cause certain cellular reactions. The breakthrough in related field will bring new hope for manufacture of cancer-resisting medicines and other cures.
