CONFERENCE
IFSAM 9th World Congress 2008 Held at Fudan University
Organized by IFSAM and hosted by Fudan School of Management, IFSAM 9th World Congress 2008 opened in the Guanghua Towers of Fudan University, Shanghai. The theme of this year is The Fusion and Development of East and West Management. This is the first time that the congress is held in a developing country.
Mr. Han Qide, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of NPC, participated in the opening ceremony. Professor Qin Shaode, Chancellor of Fudan, gave welcoming remarks. Mr. Wang Jiarui, Director of International Department, Central Government of CPC, and Professor Su Dongshui, Conference Chair gave keynote speeches.
IFSAM is The International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management composed of research institutions on management and enterprise and management schools of universities, committed to the exchange and cooperation in the field of management. Its members are from every corner of the world.
The world congress of IFSAM is held biannually. It has successfully convened eight times respectively in Tokyo, Dallas, Paris, Madrid, Montreal, Queensland, Gothenburg and Berlin, and greatly enhanced the communication of the world management community.

COOPERATION
The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Fudan University Sign Agreement on Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute
On the afternoon of July 18 2008, President Wang Shenghong met the delegation from The Chinese University of Hong Kong headed by President Lawrence Lau. The two universities signed an agreement on “CUHK-FDU Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute” that refreshed and consolidated the cooperative relations between two universities. During the following discussion, faculty from departments of medicine, literature, engineering, economics and finance of both universities introduced the latest discoveries in their respective areas of research and discussed potential cooperative programs.
In 2001, CUHK and Fudan University established Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute as a stage for all-round and multi-level communication.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Fudan University have been enjoying a very good cooperative relations over years since the first academic exchange program was launched in 1985. A certain number of professors in CUHK are honorary professors of Fudan University. Meanwhile, the two universities have mutual board members. Fudan and CUHK are also partners in Presidents’ Association and Shanghai Forum.

Fudan-Hongkong University 2008 IMBA Program Kicks Off
On August 16, 2008 Fudan University-Hong Kong University MBA (International) Program launched at Fudan University. The morning schedule includes orientation and introduction of the two universities and the management schools, curricular and syllabus. In the afternoon, the semester opening ceremony was held.
Fudan-Hongkong IMBA started in 1998 and this year is the 10th anniversary of the program. It owes its success to the support of the former Fudan President Yang Fujia and former Hongkong University President Zheng Zongyao. The semester opening ceremony is part of the 10th anniversary celebration which lasts till November. The program has grown from a scale of around 100 students to 250 students this year.

S³Asia MBA Launched
On August 27, S³ Asia MBA Class Opening Ceremony was held at Fudan University. This Asia MBA program was jointly established among Fudan University, Korea University and National University of Singapore: three leading universities in the region.
Asia MBA is the first program under the framework of S³University Alliance. This Alliance is composed of three universities located at Shanghai, Seoul and Singapore, three cities begun with S; and thus is named as S³ University Alliance (S³UA). S³Asia MBA Program is the unique MBA program equipped with educational, business and cultural resources from China, Korea and Singapore. The program officially started in February, 2008, and admitted 33 students from 6 countries and as the first class. Among these students, 31.3% are ladies; 30.3% are from Korea, 27.3% are from India, and the rest are from Singapore, Indonesia and the United States. The average age of the class is 30 and the average working experience is 6 years. The students are from IT, Finance, Manufacture, Real Estate and other industries.
Asia MBA Program is a two-year full-time English teaching program, and students will stay at all three universities, Fudan University, Korea University and National University of Singapore, one semester for each campus. Qualified students will be rewarded both degree certificate and graduation certificate of Fudan University, and one degree certificate from either Korea University or National University of Singapore.

Coco-Cola Company(China)Donates 1 Million to Fudan
Coca-Cola Company (China) donated 1 million to Fudan University Education development Foundation through Shanghai Shen-Mei Beverage & Food Company, supporting the future development of Fudan University.
The agreement signing ceremony was held on July 30 at Fudan Crowne Plaza Hotel. Dr. Xu Zheng, Secretary-General of the Foundation and Vice President of Fudan University, attended the ceremony and addressed to the guests. Dr. Xu acknowledged the long-term cooperative relations between Fudan University and Coco-Cola Company (China), appreciated the donation made by the company and expected more future cooperation. General Manager of Shanghai Shen-Mei Beverage & Food Company wished on the occasion that this donation could be a beginning of another round of talents’ training and exchange for both parties. Faculty from related departments at Fudan and senior managers of Shanghai Shen-Mei Beverage & Food Company attending the signing ceremony as well.

Cheng Yu-tung Foundation Supports Development of Fudan School of Art
On August 6, Cheng Yu-tung Foundation signed a donation agreement with Fudan University Education Development Foundation to support establishment of Fudan School of Art at Fudan Jiangwan Campus which is home to the new school. Dr. Cheng Yu-tung, Fudan Board Member, was present to the signing ceremony together with Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode and President Wang Shenghong.
Born in Shunde, Guangdong, Dr. Cheng Yu-tung is Chairman of New World Hotels (Holdings) Limited and Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Limited. Dr. Cheng Yu-tung has received numerous titles and honors from governments, companies, universities and organizations both in Hong Kong and the Mainland of China. The latest one is the Great Bauhinia Medal rewarded on July 1 2008 by Hong Kong SAR.

Fudan Wins the championship of YICGG2008 in Rome
From August 18 to 26, the second “Youth Innovation Competition in Global Governance”(YICGG2008)with the topic of “Global Governance: Growth and Innovation 2020”, jointly hosted by Fudan University, Rome Tor Vergata University, Politecnico of Turin and other two institutes, was held in Rome, Italy. After 9 days of competition, “Future Depends on Us” from Fudan won the championship.
The YICGG this year attracted over 100 young graduates from 27 universities in more than 20 Countries, and almost 30 experts and professors from various nations spoke on a variety of issues concerning the global management.
“Future Depends on Us” won the only first award with its excellent reports. All of the awarded reports will be submitted to United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and be published on Transition Study Review.
YICGG was jointly initiated by Fudan University and UNDP in 2007, aiming to “pay attention to global issues, inspire the innovation ability of the youth, awaken cosmopolitan consciousness, and create jointly a harmonious world.”
In year 2007, the first YICGG was held successfully at Fudan, and attractive over 80 participants from 14 countries. It is known that YICGG2009 will be held at an overseas university, and YICGG2010 will be held at Fudan, where it was initiated, when the EXPO 2010 will be held in Shanghai.

First M.B.B.S Program Open for International Students
On August 23, 2008, Fudan University welcomed the foreign first-year undergraduate students in M.B.B.S program for the first time. M.B.B.S stands for Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery, a six-year undergraduate program, which is also Fudan’s first Bachelor’s degree program in clinic medicine instructed in English and recruiting students from abroad.
There are totally 32 international students entering M.B.B.S program this year. They are from 12 countries including US, UK, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, Thailand and Saudi Arab. These students will spend their first year at Fudan College for general education and the other five years at the Medical College for courses in medicine and internship.

VISITOR
Visit by Rice University President
On the morning of July 8, 2008, President David Leebron of Rice University and his wife Madam SUN Yueping paid a visit to Fudan University. President Wang Shenghong and Prof. Chen Yinzhang, Pro-Vice-President and Director of FAO cordially met with the guests.

In the meeting, introductions on teaching, research and international exchange were made by leaders and faculty members from the medical center office, chemistry department, physics department, advanced materials lab and school of social development and public policy. They also discussed with President Leebron on possible collaborations between Fudan and Rice.

Rice University is a well-known, private and research-oriented university located in Huston. President Wang once visited Rice and signed an MOU with President Leebron. In the meeting at Fudan, the two presidents explored the possibility of resuming the MOU.

OUTGOING
The 9th China Synergy Program for Outstanding Youth
The 9th China Synergy Program for Outstanding Youth (CSP) was held from July 1 to 17 2008. CSP is launched in 1999 as an annual program that provides scholarship to the younger generation of the overseas Chinese for study tour in China. It aims to facilitate better understanding of cultures and developments in modern China. This year, more than 200 Chinese students from internationally renowned institutions were selected by CSP for exchange in six cities of unique cultures and styles. 48 delegates from the Mainland of China joined CSP too, including two undergraduates from Fudan University.
During their stay in the Chinese cities, delegates had opportunities to meet Mr. Jia Qinglin, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and people from different circles, ranging from VIP to local residents. Their knowledge of the history and traditions of China was much enriched.
Tour cities included prosperous Hong Kong, open and growing Guangzhou, amazing Shanghai and renowned cultural ones like Xi’an and Beijing. Altogether, these cities show the students different faces of China: relic such as Qin’s Army of Terracotta Warriors and ancient fortresses are testimonies to China’s glorious past, architectural wonders like the Great Wall and the royal garden Summer Palace represent the spirit of traditional Chinese culture, while the Orient Pearl TV Tower and the Special Economic Zone are samples of achievements from thirty years’ practice of “Reform and Opening Up”.
Naturally, Beijing Olympics is the most important theme of CSP this year. Besides Olympic related sightseeing to the Peking University Olympic Table Tennis Gymnasium, Mr. He Zhen-liang, Honorary Chairman of Chinese Olympic Committee, gave a lecture on “China’s Olympic Dream”. In CSP Forum with the topic of “Youth and Olympics”, the delegates discussed with Olympic gold medal winners in person.
CSP group visited Fudan University on July 5 for History professor Jin Guangyao’s lecture on “Shanghai, the Key to Modern China”, which impressed the delegates very much.
As its motto states "Learn More About China and Chinese Culture", CSP aims at providing an opportunity for outstanding Chinese youth to experience current socio-economical, technological and cultural development of China. This year’s seventeen-day study tour proved highly successful.

Chinese-Austrian EU Summer School 2008
The “Chinese-Austrian EU Summer School 2008” jointly organized by Fudan University and the Eurasia-Pacific Uninet was held in Brussels and Austria (Salzburg and Vienna) from July 5 to July 29. Thirty-one Fudan students attended the Summer School.

The program in Brussels was organized by the Permanent Representation of Austria in Brussels, focusing on the function of the European Union and economic relations between Europe and China. In Salzburg and Vienna the lectures were given by professors from Salzburg University, University of Music and Performing Arts ‘Mozarteum’, Vienna University of Business Administration and Vienna University. The study topics included various aspects of Austrian life, such as Austrian economy, politics, literature, music, arts and education. All these visits and lectures gave the summer school attendees great opportunities to gain the first-hand knowledge about Europe.

The students also had chances to visit Bruges, Paris, Venice and some other European cities of historic significance, which greatly enriched their experience.

Student Study Abroad Program at CSUF
A group of 23 Fudan students participated in a Study Abroad Program at California State University Fullerton from July 7 to Aug 3. During this four-week program, Fullerton professors gave more than 20 lectures on American politics, economics, culture, media, society and international strategies. Field studies included campus tour in UCLA and USC, beach activities, visit to Disneyland, boat cruise in Los Angeles Harbor, visit to Getty Museum and American family visits among the others. The President of CSUF also spent one hour meeting and talking with the students, which was highly appreciated by the students.

Fudan-at-Yale Summer Session 2008
Fudan University sent 29 undergraduates to Yale Summer Session and Yale English Language Institute for the fourth time this summer. Fudan-at-Yale summer session gives the students a great opportunity to experience American education at a prestigious institution. Yale Summer Session features a challenging curriculum and schedules time for campus life, which exposes students not only to international cultural identities, but also American humanity and Yale tradition. The summer session lasts for six consecutive weeks. From Monday to Friday, the students spent at least 20 hours for in-class lecture and weekly seminar, with required courses in the morning and elective courses in the afternoon. The study topics included various aspects of American society, such as urban life, social class, gender study, education and religion. The coursework adopts fictional and non-fictional reading materials to help the participants acquire proficiency in approaching issues concerning politics, economics, the environment, etc.

American Studies 2008 at VCU
The “American Studies 2008” jointly organized by Fudan University and the Virginia Commonwealth University was held in the United States from July 10 to August 7, 2008.
This program provided over 30 hours of lectures on a wide range of topics, such as American history, politics, economics, culture, media, art, international trade and foreign policy,etc..
The participants also had chances to visit Williamsburg, Monticello, Washington D.C., and some other American cities of historic significance.
A variety of activities were planned for the program, including rowing, movies, family visits, and visits to the Busch Garden and the Virginia Beach.
According to the requirements of the program, they were also required to submit a final paper on certain aspects of the States as their research result.
It is expected that “American Studies 2008” can offer the students direct experience in the States and inspire them to reflect on their experience for better understand of the society and the culture.

Summer Program at Waseda University 2008
From July 12 to 25, altogether 29 Fudan students attended the two-week Summer Program at Waseda University. They met and held discussions with students and faculty at Waseda University and Doshisha University, attended lectures given by Chinese and Japanese scholars, enjoyed traditional Japanese tea ceremony and joined emergency rescue drills. The students also got opportunities to visit famous sight-seeing places in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto and to better understand Japan from various perspectives.
This is the fourth year for Fudan students to join this program at Waseda University.

Fudan Students Attends Summer Language Program at York University
20 Fudan students from different majors attended Summer Language Program offered by York University in Canada form July 27 to August 21, 2008.

York University is now Canada’s third largest university, world-renowned for attracting students who forge their own unique paths.

According to their performance in the placement test, students took classes on listening, reading, speaking and writing in English. Among the classes of 6 different levels, Fudan students were in the classes of top three levels. They were encouraged to discuss and express their ideas in English and in daily life.

Apart from in-class study, students enjoyed field trips to the Niagara Falls, Wonderland, Toronto Island among the others and explored ethnic neighborhoods.

Fudan students also enjoyed York campus very much, its well equipped sports facilities and the natural environment.

Introduction to Modern China – Nordic Centre Summer Course
The popular annual three-week summer course "Introduction to Modern China" was successfully arranged at Nordic Centre, Fudan University from July 7 to 25. A total number of 73 students from the Nordic Centre member universities in all five Nordic countries attended the course, which was divided into two parallel programs, specializing in "Chinese Politics and Society" and "Chinese Politics and Economy" respectively.
During the course, students were given lectures on various topics by professors from different academic background from Fudan University and other local institutions and organizations, which provided an opportunity for Nordic students to familiarize themselves with vital issues in China’s history and development, as well as to gain first-hand experience of the rapidly changing contemporary Chinese society.
Each course had a Nordic teacher who functioned as a culture broker, organizing weekly summing-ups and offering a few lectures throughout the course. In addition to the lectures, the program also included several study visits to various places of cultural and historical interest and foreign-owned companies in China.
All the Nordic students found the course a valuable opportunity for having a good overview of the contemporary Chinese society. And the final evaluation from the students was high as it has always been for the previous years.

APRU Undergraduate Summer Program 2008
Fudan University hosted the 3rd APRU Undergraduate Summer Program 2008 from July 7 to 18. Centered on the theme “Economy and Culture of A Modern China”, the program attracted 40 undergraduates from APRU members who have economics background.
Lectures were conducted in English and a daily half-hour basic Chinese language lesson was incorporated into the curriculum, helping the students to understand Chinese economy and culture after the open-up policy and reforms. During this program, the participants could also have a variety of extracurricular activities such as martial arts lessons, Beijing opera appreciation and field trips to places of interest such as the Shanghai Museum and Jade Temple.
This year, Fudan and Zhejiang University co-organized a field trip to Hangzhou and took the students to Zhejiang University and the Science Park in the city.

2008 Austrian China Know-How Summer Courses at Fudan
From August 17 to September 24 Austrian China Know-How Summer Courses, jointly presented by the Foreign Affairs Office of Fudan University, Austrian Center and Eurasia-Pacific Uninet, was held at Fudan.
Divided into two groups, altogether fifty-eight Austrian students spent two weeks in Shanghai, taking lectures from Fudan professors and Austrian experts, paying visits to enterprises and going on excursions in and out of Shanghai. The program is designed to help the Austrian young people to gain a more direct and comprehensive understanding of the various aspects of contemporary China.

Fudan-Keio-Rikkyo-Yansei Leadership Forum 2008
From August 25 to 30, Fudan-Keio-Rikkyo-Yansei Leadership Forum 2008 was held at Fudan University with the theme of “Public Diplomacy and Harmonious Region”. Altogether 31 students from Yonsei University in Korea and Keio University and Rikkyo University in Japan joined the program together with 14 Fudan students. During the Forum, participating students had opportunities to attend lectures given by Fudan professors, discussions and seminars on relevant topics, and staged culture shows. By joining this program, young people from China, Korea and Japan gained a better understanding of each other which will facilitate their collaborations in the future.
Leadership Forum was initiated in 2002 after Japan and Korea successfully co-hosted FIFA World Cup. The purpose was to develop leadership and promote mutual understanding of Korean and Japanese potential leaders. Fudan University joined this program in 2006 and therefore expanded the scope of the Leadership Forum to China.
