2008 Annual Meeting of Civil Law Research Committee China Law Society Concludes
On the evening of September 21, the 2008 Annual Meeting of Civil Law Research Committee, China Law Society was held at Fudan University. The meeting was held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Opening-up and Reform Policy of China. It was hosted by Civil Law Research Committee, China Law Society, and organized by Fudan Law School. The meeting focused on achievements and outlook of Civil Law Research in Opening-up and Reform Policy during the past thirty years, the Civil Law System and Tort Law Legitimacy Problem.

The First International Seminar on “Forum and Development”
The first International Seminar on “Forum and Development” hosted by Fudan University and the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies (KFAS) was held in Zhu Ji, Zhe Jiang Province, from September 21 to 22. The Shanghai Forum Organizing Committee of Fudan University, Center for Forum Studies of Fudan University and Zhu Ji Municipality jointly organized the Seminar.
Prof. Qin Shaode, Chancellor of Fudan University, Dr. Kim Jae-youl, President of KFAS and local official representatives gave remarks at the opening. After that, Dr. Xu Zheng delivered a keynote speech on “Shanghai Forum’s International and Specialized Construction”, followed by Prof. Yeung Yueman of The Chinese University of Hong Kong emphasizing “The Initiation and Development of International Forums”. Prof. Wing Thyewoo, another keynote speaker from Global Economy and Development Forum shared his views on “Enhancing Forums’ International Influence” as well.
The general theme of this seminar was “Forum and Development”, scholars of well-known universities from home and abroad, such as University of California, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Peking University, Renmin University of China gathered for sharing. Meanwhile, representatives from Bo’ao Forum, World Buddhism Association, China’s International Finance Annual Forum and Institution for China’s Exhibition Economics also came to discuss forums’ initiation and development, cooperation and innovation issues. A roundtable focused on “Forums’ Operation and Development Pattern: Cooperation and Innovation” followed the seminar.
Center for Forum Studies of Fudan University was established in September, 2008.

2009 Class of Fudan-LSE Global Media and Communication Dual Master Degree Program to Shanghai
The two-year Fudan-LSE Global Media and Communication Dual Masters Degree Program recruits students from all over the world. Students spend their first year in LSE and the second years at Fudan. In due time, the students can receive Master of Science Degree in International Communication of LSE and Master of Arts Degree in International Communication of Fudan upon completion of the program.
This joint program was launched in 2007. Eleven students from 9 countries started their study at the end of 2007. This September, they began their second year at Fudan. School of Journalism held a semester opening ceremony and a welcome banquet for the students of Class 2009 on September 9.

FUEDF Board Meeting Held in Shenzhen
On August 31, Board Meeting of Fudan University Education Development Foundation (FUEDF) was held in Shenzhen City of Guangdong Province.
Chancellor Qin Shaode presided over the meeting and seven Board Members including President Wang Shenghong, Dr. Li Dak Sum, Dr. Thomas Chen, Dr. Allen Chan, Vice President Wang Weiping and Vice President Xu Zheng attended the meeting.
The Board agreed to include two new members, Mr. Francis T.F. Yuen, Vice President of Pacific Century Regional Developments Ltd., and Mr. Colin K. Y. Lam, Vice Chairman of Henderson Land Development Co. Ltd., to the Board. President Wang Shenghong then conferred the letters of appointment to the new Board Member.
On the day, the Board also reviewed university performance since last meeting in May and set targets for future development.
FUEDF was registered on Jan. 25, 2006, in Delaware USA as a non-profit corporation qualified for Federal Income Tax exemption under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. FUEDF held its first annual meeting at Yale Club in New York City on Feb. 13, 2008. In order to develop the work in Hong Kong, it registered in Hong Kong this July and was qualified for tax exemption in the local as well.

Vice President Wang Weiping Attends 2nd Cross-Straits University President Forum
The Second Cross-Straits University President Forum was held at Xiamen University on September 6. About two hundred presidents, vice principals or president representatives from more than 90 universities had deep discussions upon the following two topics--- “The social responsibility and idea of running a university” and “exchange and cooperation for cross-strait universities”. Vice President Wang Wei Ping and Yu Da-chu, the director of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Affairs office attend the forum.
Vice President Wang Wei Ping made a speech to introduce the internationalization and serving society idea of Fudan University, and gave a summary of the exchange activities between Fudan and universities in Taiwan in recent years.
At present, five universities of Taiwan including Taiwan University, Cheng Kung University, Tunghai University, Tam Kang University and Feng Chia University have established exchange relations with Fudan. More than 50 Taiwan students come to Fudan via student exchange program every year. Further more, our History Department, Philosophy College and Business School also develop very interactive links with Taiwan University, Chengchi University and Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Taiwan University who keeps friendly cooperation with our university expressed that they will take the lead in putting the system of mutual recognition of credit into practice.

Fudan University Lee Shau-Kee Library Unveiled
On September 9, the launch ceremony of Fudan University Lee Shau-Kee Library was held at the new Jiangwan campus. About 100 guests and 300 students attended the ceremony on which Dr. Lee delivered a short speech, encouraging the students to work hard towards success. The donation from Dr. LEE for the library early this year is the largest amount of donation the university has received in recent years. The library occupies a total construction area of 19,690 square meters with a collection of 620,000 books, 1800 seats in reading rooms and can accommodate more than ten thousand students. It also has access to a large number of multimedia equipments. Aiming at creating a green library, eco-environmental friendly materials were widely used in construction.
Mr. Lee Shau Kee is the founder and Chairman of Hongkong Henderson Land Development Company Limited. He is a Board Member of Fudan University and was conferred Honorary Doctor’s degree in March 2008.

Fudan K. Wah Day
On the morning of Sept. 23, Fudan K. Wah Day was jointly held by Fudan University and K. Wah Group (HK) in Guanghua Towers, under the theme “Interaction and Prosperity”. President of K. Wah Group (HK) and Fudan Board Member Dr. Che-Woo Lui led a delegation of senior staff from the Group to participate in the activities.
At the beginning of the whole day activities, Fudan University Che-Woo Building reconstruction and expansion project donation ceremony was held. In order to support the development of higher education in China, Dr. Che-Woo Lui donated 30 million HK dollars to the project. On behalf of Fudan University, President Wang Shenghong received the check from Dr. Lui, and awarded him a Commemorative Plaque.
After the donation ceremony, a discussion was held in which Dr. Lui shared his feelings and thoughts in many areas including cross-border development, localization and globalization of enterprises, charismatic qualities, talents training, core competitive power of companies, sustainable management and life philosophy.
Fudan University and K. Wah Group (HK) have enjoyed good relations for long. Dr. Lui has been Board Member of Fudan for four years. In 2005, Dr. Lui donated to build Che-Woo Hall in Guanghua Towers for the centennial anniversary of Fudan University. At the same time, Dr. Lui also financially supported the first Fudan-K. Wah “Baisui Cup” golf competition. The opening of “Fudan K. Wah Day” is a sign for official establishment of cooperative partnership in talents training between Fudan University and K. Wah Group (HK). According to the varying requirements of development of K. Wah group, Fudan University is going to train more international standard talents. Meanwhile, K. Wah Group (HK) will also offer an international business stage and rich management experiences to Fudan students. With more practical practices, K. Wah aims at offering Fudan students more vocational opportunities to display their knowledge and abilities.

China and the World: Social Science Senior Forum Kicks Off
The National Institute for Advanced Study on Social Science at Fudan University (IAS-Fudan) hosted “China and the World: Social Science Senior Forum” at Guanghua Towers on Sept. 25.
Chancellor Qin Shaode delivered a speech at the opening ceremony and announced that IAS-Fudan will be launched this year headed by Prof. Deng Zhenglai. Prof. Deng remarked on the theme, organization and schedule of the Forum. He also expected that the Forum will contribute to the transition in the academic circle of Chinese philosophy from the simple introduction of foreign philosophical theory to the concrete and in-depth dialogue and communication with the world.
Prof. Deng Zhenglai conferred the title of “the Academic Committee Founding Member of IAS-Fudan” to the world renowned anthropologist Prof. Marshall Sahlins who in turn unveiled the plaque for the Forum with Prof. Deng and delivered an opening speech, titled as “Postmodernism, Neoliberalism, Human Nature and Culture”.
Fudan Launches Research Center for Port Development in YRD Region
On Sep 26, Research Center for Port Development in Yangtze River Delta (YRD) Region at Fudan University was officially established. Co-initiated by Fudan University, Shanghai Port Administration Bureau and another fifteen port cities in YRD Region, this Center is expected to be a research platform on scientific development for ports in YRD Region and its establishment is marking a new stage for close cooperation among concerned institutions.

Academician Zhao Dongyuan Presented IMMA Award
The Sixth International Mesostructured Materials Symposium was held from September 7 till September 11 at Namur, Belgium with four hundred representatives from 41 countries attending. Academician Zhao Dongyuan from Fudan University was presented the IMMA Award. Professor Zhao delivered a speech on “New Advances in synthesis of Non-Oxide Mesostructured Materials”.
The IMMA Award was established in 2004, and is presented every two years, to only one winner. It aims to award those scientists who have made great contribution to the academic field of mesostructured material research field. Academician Zhao reported the research result of SBA-15 in 1998, and thus drew a broad attention from other scholars all over the world. Academician Zhao Dongyuan has reported 18 new mesostructured materials named after Fudan, which made a Fudan University series. In 2008, Academician Zhao was named scholar who has the highest citation rate in the field of mesostructured materials research field.
Academician Zhao was presented the IMMA Award in 2008 owing to his great contribution to the research field, and was the third scientist who won this award after Galen D. Stucky and Thomas J. Pinnavaia.

Dr. William Kirby from Harvard Conferred Honorary Professorship
Prof. Wang Shenghong, President of Fudan University, met Prof. William Kirby and his delegation at Fudan’s main campus on Sept. 8. After a conversation focused on promoting humane studies development, Prof. Wang Shenghong conferred Honorary Professorship upon Prof. Kirby with students from various departments witnessing.
Prof. Kirby, as an expert in Chinese culture and history research delivered a speech on “Chinese and American Universities: Challenges for 21st Century” to Fudan’s students and faculties. After a brief introduction of the U.S. universities, Prof. Kirby remarked on challenges and opportunities in existence, sharing his perspectives on education expenditure, campus capacity and cultivation ideas with all the seated.
Prof. Kirby met Prof. Lu Xiongwen, Dean of Fudan School of Management earlier this day and visited Fudan’s Jiang Wan New Campus after his speech.
Prof. Gui Yonghao, Vice President of Fudan University, hosted a welcoming dinner in honor of the delegation and exchanged ideas on possible academic exchanges and collaborations in near future.

Three Fudan Foreign Faculty Receive Shanghai Magnolia Award
On Sep 18, the presentation ceremony of Shanghai Magnolia Award was held in Shanghai Jinjiang Auditorium. Three Fudan foreign faculty members, Prof. Tian Xu from the Institute of Developmental Biology and Molecular Medicine, Prof. Roger Hutton from Institute of Modern Physics and Dr. Lorenzo Cohen from Shanghai Tumor Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, won this award and the former two attended the ceremony and were present commemorate medals and certificates by Director Li Mingjun from Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office who was representing Shanghai Municipal Government.
Shanghai Municipality introduced Shanghai Magnolia Award which is named after Shanghai’s official flower in 1989 to express appreciation to foreigners who live in Shanghai and contribute significantly to the city’s economic performance, international relations, business environment, management standards and community development.

School of Public Health Entrusted with New NIH Program
Fudan University School of Public Health was just entrusted the research of “Multidisciplinary approaches to reproductive health in global health context (1R25TW008118-01)”, which is on the sponsorship list of Fogarty International Center, U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Prof. Qian Xu will be the principal investigator of the program.
China is one of the few developing countries that have been entrusted with programs of this kind that focus on procreant health. The program that Fudan was recently entrusted with will be implemented jointly by Fudan School of Public Health, Fudan affiliated Maternity Hospital, Fudan affiliated Children’s Hospital, Fudan affiliated Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan School of Social Development and Public Policy, and Shanghai Municipal Institute of Family Planning. The program will provide multi-disciplinary training to the younger generation of professionals in public health from both home and abroad.
This is the third time that Fudan receives programs from NIH. Previously, the program “Community-based VCT for HIV in Rural Migrants in China(R01 TW007298)” was entrusted to School of Public Health in 2005, with Prof. He Na as the principal investigator. In 2007, “Social and biomedical risk factors for multi-drug resistant TB in rural China (1R01AI075463-01)” was entrusted to a group of Fudan scientists headed by Prof. Xu Biao.

Argentinean Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. José Lino Barañao Visits Fudan
On September 4, invited by Ministry of Technology of China, Argentinean Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. José Lino Barañao visited Fudan and met with Professor Jing Li, Vice President of Fudan University. Pro-Vice President Professor Chen Yinzhang, Executive Vice Dean of School of Life Sciences Professor Zhong Yang and Vice Dean Professor Mei Yan’ai also joined the meeting. The two parties exchanged ideas about how the advancement of life science can affect the agriculture and economics of a country. Following the meeting, the delegation also visited the Developmental Biology Laboratory.

Visit by President of University of Utrecht
Prof. Van Rooy, President of University of Utrecht, came to Shanghai and met President Wang Shenghong on September 6. Prof. Van Rooy expressed her strong interest to cooperate with Fudan. Short was her stay in Shanghai, the two parties explored possibilities of exchanging students, holding seminars and delivering joint Ph.D. education.
University of Utrecht is one of Europe’s top ranked research universities in the Netherlands. Recent years, it has focused its research on brain sciences, life sciences, information technology and social sciences of public importance. Fudan University is one of University of Utrecht’s key partners in Asia.
