Prof. Yang Yuliang Appointed President of Fudan University

 

 

On January 14 2009, Professor Yang Yuliang was appointed by CPC Central Committee and the State Council President of Fudan University.

 

Born in Zhejiang, China, Professor Yang Yuliang received B.S. degree in 1977 and Ph.D. in 1984 from Fudan University. He worked as a post-doc on macromolecular compound at Max Planck Institute from 1986 to 1988. In 2003 Professor Yang was elected Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

 

The academic interest of Professor Yang is in condensed matter physics and polymerization. He owns dozens of domestic and international patents and serves on the boards of several academic journals including Chinese Journal of Chemistry and Science in China. Professor Yang has been rewarded with many titles and awards from home and abroad, including “Cheung Kong Scholar” and “National Scientific and Technological Progress Award”. Professor Yang is the principal investigator of State 973 Project.

 

Professor Yang was a faculty member of Fudan University before he was appointed Vice President for Research of Fudan in 1999. In 2006, he was appointed Director General of the Department of Degree and Postgraduate Education, Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. Professor Yang serves as a senior advisor to Shanghai Municipal Government.

CONFERENCE

Fudan University-University of Oxford International Conference Held at Fudan

 

 

On December 12th, Fudan School of International Relations and Public Affairs and the Department of Politics together with International Relations of University of Oxford held a conference on “Effective Multilateralism: Through the Looking Glass of East Asia”. Fifty Professors from eighteen prestigious universities such as Oxford, LSE, Duke University, Keio University, NUS, Fudan, Peking University shared their views on the influence of cooperation and development in East-Asia on global governance and multi-literalism. The conference was supported by the Academy of Social Sciences, UK, and Fudan University. Dr. Xu Zheng, Vice President of Fudan delivered welcome speech at the opening ceremony.

East Asia is the focus of discussions. Scholars analyzed the complicated relations between formal and informal international organizations based on the observations on the East Asia area. The conference followed six major topics: the functional factors on the actions of international organizations, the influence of the wars in the history on the regional cooperation in the 21 century, the roles of regional super powers, the interactivity of global multi-lateralism, the functions of informal international organizations and the influence of global governance on ideology. The professors also had detailed discussions on key issues such as solution to conflicts, anti-terrorism, financial crisis, public health and security with regard to multi-literalism.

International Seminar on “Thirty Years of Great Changes: The Impact of China’s Opening-up and Reform Policy on Society” Concludes

 



 

On December 13 and 14, the international seminar on “Thirty Years of Great Changes: The Impact of China’s Opening-up and Reform Policy on Society”, which was jointly organized by Fudan University and Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), was held at Fudan University. The seminar was also held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the re-opening of Fudan Department of Sociology. Over 140 experts and scholars from more than 40 renowned universities and research institutions home and abroad participated in the seminar, including Fudan Vice President Prof. Cai Dafeng, renowned sociologist and former President of CUHK Prof. Yeo-Chi King, and Director of Chinese Sociological Association Prof. Li Peilin among other distinguished guests.

 

Attendees discussed the impact of China’s opening-up and reform practice in the past thirty years on China’s social development and social lives in the context of globalization, summarizing the historical experiences during this period, and exploring related theoretical issues.

 

Fudan Department of Sociology was established in 1925, re-opened in 1988 and upgraded into School of Social Development and Public Policy in 2004. The School now includes Departments of Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Social Administration and Social Policy, Institute of Population Studies as well as several university-level research centers. Focusing its research on social transformations and social development in the urban society, the School promotes cross-disciplinary studies from perspectives of demography, resource and environmental economics, psychology, social work and so on, aiming to be one of the national research centers on social policy.

U21 Workshop on Sustainable Development of Confucius Institute

 

 

On December 7 2008, U21 Workshop on Sustainable Development of Confucius Institute (CI) was held at Fudan University. Dr. Zhu Chouwen, Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Office welcomed the participants on behalf of Fudan University. Prof. Zhu Yongsheng, Dean of International Cultural Exchange School, presided over the workshop and invited the representatives to make presentation and discussions on 5 topics, that is, CI’s structure and operation; Funding; Project plan; Academic and social impact and Further support from Hanban, CI hosts and Chinese partners.

 

Twenty-two delegates from U21 members and Fudan CI partner universities attended the meeting, including UCLA, UNSW, UCD, The University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, The University of Edinburgh, The University of Nottingham, The University of Auckland and Stockholm University.

 

By the end of the workshop, the attendees agreed that the following aspects are essential in sustainable development of CIs. They are: 1) development of a coherent, sustainable global strategy; 2) classification of CIs according to mission, size, population base, national or regional role; 3) identification of models, phases of development, scalability; 4) incentives to international collaboration between institutes; 5) simplification of procedures and 6) approval of multi-year budget for planning and staff employment.

Two Fudan Confucius Institutes Selected “Model Institute” by Hanban

 

 

Recently, the third Confucius Institute (CI) Conference was held by Hanban, on which 20 “Model Institute” awards were presented to twenty CIs among the 249 Confucius Institutes and 56 Confucius Classes all over the world. Two Fudan Confucius Institutes, Edinburgh Confucius Institute in Britain and Auckland Confucius Institute in New Zealand, were granted with the honor.

 

On Dec.9th, the third Confucius Institute Conference was held in People’s Great Hall in Beijing with more than 500 participants from 78 countries and regions attending, including presidents of universities, directors of Confucius institutes and officials from Chinese Embassies abroad. On the opening ceremony, five representatives of overseas countries, including President of University of Edinburgh and President of Auckland University, made keynote speeches.

 

The theme of the conference this year is Confucius Institute and Global Education. Addition to Presidents’ Forum and Directors’ Forum, ten sub-forums were held to provide opportunities for representatives to communicate. Among all, the theme for Presidents’ Forum was “Confucius Institute and Global Education”, “Confucius Institute and College Education Improvement”, “Mandarin Promotion and Development of World Multi-Culture”, the themes for Directors’ Forum is “Confucius Institute and Its Impact on University Development”, “Confucius Institute and Its Contributions to Local Community”, and “Marketing and Substantial Development of Confucius Institute”. The themes for sub-forums are “Quality and Management of Confucius Institutes”, “Curriculum Setting and Material chosen for Confucius Institute”, “Language Teachers’ Training and Confucius Institute”, and “Arrangement and Development of Culture Activities of Confucius Institute”.

 

249 Confucius Institutes and 56 Confucius Classes have been opened by the end of December, 2008, crossing 78 countries. There are 90 institutes in 26 countries and regions in Asia, 21 in 14 countries in Africa, 103 in 26 countries in Europe, 81 in 10 countries in America, and 10 in 2 countries in Oceania. Fudan University has been making contributions to the national strategy, “Promote Mandarin to the world, and let the world know more about China”. With the help of overseas partnership universities, 8 Fudan Confucius Institutes have been set up, they are Stockholm Nordic Confucius Institute in Sweden, which is the first Confucius Institute in Europe set up in the University of Stockholm, Auckland University Confucius Institute in New Zealand, Edinburgh University Confucius Institute in Britain, Nottingham University Confucius Institute in Britain, Frankfort University Confucius Institute in Germany, Hamburg University Confucius Institute in Germany, Autonomous University of Madrid Confucius Institute in Spain, the University of Sydney Confucius Institute in Sydney.

Renowned Professor George Fenich Lecturing on “Fudan Conventions Economy Forum”

 

 

Prof. George Fenich, renowned expert in events and conventions management from Department of Hospitality Management of East Carolina University, talked on the first session of “Fudan Conventions Economy Forum” on “Assessing Destination Attractiveness: An Example Using Conventions”, on December 3, 2008. Representatives from Shanghai International Convention Center and other conventions institutions gathered for this activity.

Conventions Economy Forum is initiated by Center for Forum’s Studies at Fudan. Focusing on the hospitality management theories and practices, this Forum is to invite professionals, scholars, entrepreneurs as well as government officials concerned to join its monthly lectures and roundtable discussions. It also aims to forge a long-term interaction platform for these people and to provide intellectual support for education of hospitality management.

Fudan University Sets Up National Institute for Advanced Study on Social Sciences

 


 

In the evening of December 5, Fudan University held a founding ceremony for National Institute for Advanced Study on Social Sciences. Chancellor Qin Shaode presented letter of appointment to Professor Deng Zhenglai, the inaugurate dean, and unveiled the plaque with Vice Minister Pan Shiwei of the Publicity Department of Shanghai Municipal Government. Over one hundred scholars from universities and academic institutions at home and abroad attended the inaugural ceremony.

 

National Institute for Advanced Study on Social Sciences is a research institute dedicated to academic research, academic exchanges and talents training. By organizing academic workshops, academic club, international academic conferences, international programs on social sciences and international academic publications, the Institute will build various academic system and platforms for scholars who are devoted to academic research, and encourage cross-disciplinary and "non-academic" studies on China’s social reform and development. The Institute is committed to cultivating a large number of academic talents who attach importance to theoretical research, global vision.

 

National Institute for Advanced Study on Social Sciences invited world-renowned scholars Anthony Giddens and Professor Immanuel Wallerstein as Honorary Deans. It also invited Professor Tang Yijie from Philosophy Department of Peking University, Professor Lawrence Lau, Vice-Chancellor of Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Professor Zhang Zhongli, economic historian, as Academic Advisers. An Academic Committee composed of Jeffrey C. Alexander, Wu Jinglian, Xu Zhuoyun and other renowned scholars from at home and abroad was set up.

 

National Institute for Advanced Study on Social Sciences hosted two major academic forums, namely “China and the World: Social Science Senior Forum” and “In-Depth China Study”, every two weeks, inviting renowned scholars as speakers for talks on social science research and theoretical analysis on the development issues in China.

 

After the inaugural meeting, the participants participated in the forum of “Social Sciences in China in the Era of Globalization”. In the two-day forum, the scholars discussed globalization and China study, disciplinary development of China’s Social Sciences and academic development of China over the past three decades.

Fudan Applies Autonomous Admission Practice in Zhejiang Province

 

According to “The plan of Fudan autonomous selection and admission reform of 2009” approved by Ministry of Education and issued by Fudan University on December 11, Fudan will apply autonomous admission policy in Zhejiang three years after it was implemented in Shanghai. On that day, local high school principals were invited to a roundtable talk and press release were issued to the local media.

Fudan is going to admit 600 undergraduates in 2009 through autonomous admission, including 100 from Zhejiang province. Top 200 applicants from Zhejiang in Fudan Aptitude Test will be eligible for applying to Fudan University Autonomous Admission.

Fudan took the lead in experimenting autonomous admission in 2006, which was regarded as an ice-breaking measure in higher education in China by the general public.

2008 Foreign Student Scholarship Awarded

 

 

On Oct.16, 2008 Foreign Student Scholarship was awarded to 188 foreign students studying at Fudan University.

 

Prof. Chen Limin, Fudan Vice President and Chair of Foreign Students Scholarship Committee, attended the award presentation and addressed the audience. Consuls and officials from Consulates General in Shanghai of Korea, Russia, Slovaks, Thailand, Singapore, Indian, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, France, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan attended the function.

 

At present, the scholarships for foreign students of Fudan University represent a character of “high level, wide coverage and sound quotas”. The scholarship events include “Special Scholarship of Chinese Government -- the postgraduate event”, “Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship for International Students”, Freshmen Scholarship of Fudan University, First-Class Students Scholarship, and “One Two Three Chinese Culture Scholarship” set by foreign companies. Besides, “The 21st Century for International Excellent Graduate Event of Fudan University” was added to provide more scholarships for excellent graduates from renowned high schools all over the world.

Large-scale Foreign Talents Recruitment Held By the Institute of Biomedical Science

 

 

On Dec.18, an interview defense for foreign talents was held by the Institute of Biomedical Science, which was the second large-scale recruitment in this semester. The Institute of Biomedical Science received about two hundred applications from overseas. After the first round screening and comprehensive evaluation, eleven candidates were selected for interview. After the interview, the applicants visited the laboratories of the Institute and had an exchange with the PI and the postgraduates. This is one of the “opening up and compatible” strategies of Institute of Biomedical Science.

Naming Ceremony of Shanghai High Risk Infants Emergency Center

 


 

On the morning of Dec. 26, the naming ceremony of Shanghai High Risk Infants Emergency Center was held at Shanghai Children’s Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University. Director of Shanghai Health Bureau, Mr. Xu Jianguang, Director of development center of Shanghai Shenkang Hospital, Ms. Gao Jiechun, Director of Disease Control and Woman and Children’s Health Center, Shanghai Health Bureau, presented the Plaques to six hospitals, i.e. Children’s Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, Shanghai Children’s Hospital, Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai Children’s Medical Center Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai No.1 Hospital for Mother and Children’s Health, and No.3 People’s Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Six newly set up High Risk Infants Emergency Centers are located in different parts of the city, structuring a network for emergency rescue, treatment and transfer. Since this is a new field in China so far, it requires cooperation from three parts related, maternity department, infant department and emergency department. The launch of the six centers will effectively reduce the death rate of newly-born babies, and exert its social impact on millions of families.

Prof. Jin Yaqiu Elected Member of IEEE GRSS AdCom

 

Prof. Jin Yaqiu from School of Information Science and Engineering of Fudan University was recently elected Member of Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Administrative Committee (GRSS AdCom) of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Prof. Jin is so far the first Chinese scientist and the first from developing countries as Member of GRSS AdCom in the 40-year history of GRSS.

Fudan Professors Won Awards at CIIF 2008

 

Word came from China International Industry Fair(CIIF)2008 held at Shanghai New International Expo Centre that three exhibited projects presented by Fudan University won awards. Novel Synthetic Process of Diclofenacs by Prof. Chen Fen’er of Chemistry Department won Silver Award. Transparent Glass Heat Insulation Paint by Prof. Wu Limin of Material Science Department won Award of Innovation, while Real-time Remote Monitor System of Out-Of-Hospital Cardiac Patients by Prof. Fang Zuxiang of School of Information Science and Engineering won First Prize of Outstanding Exhibit in University Exhibition.

CIIF is a platform of exhibiting the latest product and technology that based on Asia-Pacific and even the global industrial field. Themed by “Scientific & Technological Innovation and Equipment Manufacturing”, CIIF 2008 focused on Key Equipment and intensified the four major functions of “Trade, Exhibition, Assessment and Forum”.

Endoscopic Award to Zhongshan Hospital Doctors

 

On the 18th China Endoscopic Conference, Dr. Chen Shiyao and Dr. Xu Meidong of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University were presented Endoscopic Medical Science & Tech Award for Outstanding Achievement. Meanwhile, Professor Yao Liqing was selected Vice General Director of the 2nd Committee of China Endoscopic Doctor Association of China Doctor Association.

The 18th China Endoscopic Conference was hosted by Endoscopic Medical Science & Tech Award Committee, China Endoscopic Doctor Association of China Doctor Association, National Hepatobiliary & Enteric Surgery Research Center and Central South University.

The first Award of Endoscopic Medical Tech-Science was given in 2004 on the 13th China Endoscopic Conference. Academician Qiu Fazu, Academician Zhong Nanshan, Professor D. L. Bartlett and Professor J. M. Sackier were among the first cohort of rewardees. The Award of Endoscopic Medical Science & Tech Award is one of the top awards in the field of medical research in China.

Single-axis Optical Fiber Vibration Sensing Technology Passes Evaluation

 


 

On December 12th, the evaluation meeting for the new fiber sensing technology developed by Fudan Fiber Research Center was held at Fudan University. President Wang Shenghong and Vice President Chen Xiaoman attended the evaluation. The evaluation panel was comprised of 9 academicians of Chinese Academy of Science. They are Jin Guofan, Shen Xuechu, Liu Songhao, Ye Shenghua, Fan Dianyuan, Li Tongbao, Zhang Zhonghua, Wang Weiqi, Zhuang Songlin. Prof. Jin Guofan was Chair of the Panel.

The panel listened to the presentation of the research team and visited the laboratory. They agreed that the research on fiber vibration sensing has reached international advanced level and the voice sensing and distributed vibration sensing technologies are in the leading position in the world.

Fudan Fiber Research Center spent ten years on developing single-axis optical fiber vibration sensing technology and owns proprietary IP of the research results. The technology has been widely used in 2008 Bejing Olympic Games, life sciences, industry and military affairs. It can be further developed for disaster prevention, transportation of energy. The Fiber Research Center has been given twelve patents and one software copyright, which fills the gap in terms of products and technological standard.

Visit by North Korea Medical Education Delegation

 

 

Upon the invitation of the Ministry of Education of China, a North Korean Education Delegation led by Madam O Mun Ae, Vice Director of the Ministry of Education of North Korea, visited Fudan University as its first stop of China tour in December 2008. The delegation, which was mainly composed of presidents of various medical colleges in North Korea, visited Fudan Fengling Medical Campus and Huashan Hospital Affiliating to Fudan. Professor Lu Yinqing, Vice Dean of Shanghai Medical College of Fudan, Professor Shao Jianhua, Vice Dean of Huashan Hospital and Dr. Zhu Chouwen, Director of Fudan Medical Center Office met with the delegation and introduced the updates and future plans of Medical College and Huashan hospital. The delegation also received gifts including textbooks and research materials from Fudan University.

Visit by Delegation of the American Council of Young Political Leaders

 

 

Prof. Shen Dingli, Director of Center for American Studies met a delegation from the American Council of Young Political Leaders on December 17, 2008. The talks were centered on Sino-American relations, China’s current development, Chinese human rights and cross-strait issues.

 

The American Council of Young Political Leaders was established in 1966 as a bipartisan union for young leaders. It boosts international exchanges for its members, aiming to expand their global views and to establish extensive relations network worldwide. The members of this Council are promising and influential young leaders.

 

This delegation was invited by Chinese Communist Youth League who wished better mutual understandings and friendship between the younger generations.
