The Fourth Annual Conference of Association of Asia Pacific Business Schools Held at Fudan University
The Fourth Annual Conference of Association of Asia Pacific Business Schools was held at Fudan University on 7th and 8th November. Around 120 presidents and professors from business schools in the Asia-Pacific Region, as well as from U.S. and Europe attended the conference, among which there were 20 presidents representing Chinese business schools.
Association of Asia Pacific Business Schools (AAPBS) is a regional, non-profit business school association established in 2004 and initiated by 11 business schools in the Asia-Pacific region. The initiators came from the best universities in the region. The goal of the association is to guide the education of management and improve the quality of business schools, thus to cultivate highly qualified managerial personnel and scholars for the region. Currently the Association has 109 member intuitions, including 17 counsel member institutions.
The Annual Conference of AAPBS is a regional conference co-organized by business schools in the Asia-Pacific Region. With the increasing global significance of the Asian economy, the conference draws a global attention. Representatives of business schools from Denmark, France, Finland, Iceland and England also attended the conference. Despite of geographical differences, the member institutions of AAPBS have been establishing strong cooperative relationship with business schools from France and England, as well as international organizations such as AACSB and EFMD.
Based in Asia, AAPBS has been keeping a global vision as a tradition. During the two-day conference, heated discussions covering a number of different topics were conducted with the central guideline of "Globalization of Education in Management". These topics included global cooperation in Asian economy, global branding of education in management, the best practice of Asia-Pacific business schools, international student/ teacher exchange and globalization of MBA education. Besides, representatives also expressed their opinions towards the current situation and possible future changes of the global economy.

Cooperation on "Yale Global Online Fudan Edition"
From November 1 to 8, appointed by Fudan University, Dean Professor Deng Zhenglai of Fudan Institute of Advanced Social Sciences (hereinafter referred to as "IAS") visited Yale University to discuss the cooperation on "Yale Global Online Fudan edition".
At Yale, Professor Deng Zhenglai had a fruitful discussion with Mr. Nayan Chanda, Yale Global Online Editor-in-Chief, and Linda Lorimer, Vice President of Yale University on the issues of "Yale Global Online Fudan Edition". The two parties have reached a preliminary agreement on the project concerning translation, publication, database applications, as well as staffing.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ernesto Zedillo, Director of the Center for the Study of Globalization at Yale University and also former President of Mexico, hosted a banquet in honor of Professor Deng Zhenglai and his colleagues.
During the stay at Yale, Professor Deng Zhenglai also met with other high-level academic experts including T. Pogge, IAS founding member and Professor of Political Philosophy at Yale University, and J. Alexander, Professor of Sociology at Yale University, and Mr. Lin Yifu, Vice President of World Bank and Honorary Chairman of IAS Academic Committee.

Fudan EMBA Launches Credit Course in North America
Dr. Chen Jie, Associate Professor of Fudan School of Management, headed an EMBA candidate delegation to Anderson School of Management of UCLA on November 1st and stayed for a nine-day credit course of "Challenges for International Entrepreneurs", symbolizing Fudan EMBA抯 first North American credit course and unfolding a head page of initiative collaboration between Fudan and UCLA in EMBA programs.
The course is an integration of a range of competitive curriculums at UCLA from Entrepreneurship, Venture Financing and Risk Capital to Operational Management of Entrepreneurial Ventures, field activities including company visits to Google, Cisco, and Deloitte at Silicon Valley among the others. Meanwhile, Chinese businessmen in Los Angeles, cultural consuls from local Chinese consulate as well as officials from the Los Angeles government were also invited at luncheons for interactions with the EMBA students.
UCLA is famous for its entrepreneurship-related curriculums. Fudan抯 current EMBA programs are accordingly expected to provide more internationalized and high-quality optional courses through collaborations with UCLA. In addition, it is also designed to help students acquire cutting-edge management knowledge by means of attending overseas courses and visiting world-renowned enterprises. This visit is considered as an effective way to present multi-dimensional opportunities for Fudan EMBA students to boost linkages with their counterparts around the world.

Celebration of 10th Anniversary of Fudan-HKU IMBA
The 10th anniversary celebration of the launch of Fudan-HKU MBA International was held on November 8.
The theme of the celebration is "Hong Kong and Shanghai ?A Tale of Two Cities." Prof. Qin Shaode, Chancellor of Fudan, Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor of HKU, Prof. Lu Xiongwen, Dean of Business School of Fudan, Gary Biddle, Dean of Faculty of Business and Economics of HKU, Mr. Vincent Lo, Chairman of Shui On Group, Mr. Dai Liu, Chairman of the World Expo Group, Mr. Frederick Ma, former Director of Commerce and Economic Development Secretary, and other corporate guests attended the ceremony together with over MBA 400 alumni.
The guests had heated discussions on the topic of "Hong Kong and Shanghai - A Tale of Two Cities" and remarked that Shanghai and Hong Kong have brought tremendous surprise and vitality into China. Fudan-HKU IMBA project pooled top resources of Shanghai and Hong Kong and facilitated as a basis for the development of the two cities.
Started in 1998, Fudan-HKU IBMA was the first educational program between Mainland China and Hong Kong. The project received excellent results in the evaluation of Overseas Degrees Co-sponsoring Project in year 2001.

Agreement Signed Between Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies of Fudan University and Sung Kyun Kwan University
On November 25, Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies of Fudan University Signed Academic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement with East Asian Studies Institute, Sung Kyun Kwan University. The parties agreed to jointly hold conferences, deliver innovative research in specific fields, as well as to exchange research faculties and academic journals.
The signing ceremony was hosted by Professor Wang Yonghao, Executive Vice Dean of Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies. Professor Fang Jinggang, Director of Academic Research Office of Social Science, Professor Zhou Zhenhe, and Dean of Academy of East Asian Studies from Sung Kyun Kwan University also attended the ceremony.
Academy of East Asian Studies, Sung Kyun Kwan University, is the third partner organization of the Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies of Fudan University after Vietnam Hannam Institute and Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences of National Taiwan University.

Endowment Professorship of Social Science Established by Fudan Board Member
On Nov. 28th, Mr. Andrew Yao, Fudan University board member and President of Van Shun Chong Holdings Limited, donated to establish one professorship of social science, in the hope of attracting the best scholar in the field of economics to the University.
Before Andrew Yao Professorship was offered, Mr. Yao had donated to establish an information technology laboratory after his name.

"Fudan Day" at Waseda University
On November 10, "Fudan Day" was held at Waseda University, the strategic partner of Fudan in Japan. This is the first time that Fudan University held event of this kind in overseas universities to promote Fudan. Distinguished guests including Chinese ambassador to Japan Mr. Cui Tiankai and President of Waseda University Prof. Katsuhiko Shirai attended the opening ceremony of Fudan Day and addressed the audience. President Wang Shenghong of Fudan University delivered the keynote speech entitled "Inherit the one-hundred-year-history of Fudan, Join hands to create a brighter future for Asia", giving thorough introduction to the history, development and future prospects of Fudan University. Following the speech, President Wang Shenghong, accompanied by President Katsuhiko Shirai, conferred diplomas to the graduates of the Waseda-Fudan Joint Degree program.
In the afternoon session, renowned professors from Fudan including Professor Wen Yumei, Professor Jiang Yihua, Professor Fan Yongming and Professor Wu Xinbo gave lectures on various subjects to Waseda students and faculty. Meanwhile, in the International Center of Waseda University, diversified student activities such as "Chinese Hour" were staged. Japanese students had an opportunity to taste Chinese snacks and practice their Chinese with students from Fudan. After that, a student seminar entitled "Seeing the World through the Eyes of Youth" was held, followed by a joint concert given by student musicians from both Fudan and Waseda University. Representatives from Foreign Affairs Office, Office of Liaison and Development as well as Foreign Students Office of Fudan University were also present to answer questions from interested students.
As part of the "Fudan Day", the annual meeting of Fudan-Waseda Joint Management Committee for Teaching and Research was held on the same day at Waseda University. The presidents of two universities together with other representatives joined the meeting and held discussions on various subjects concerning the future development of the collaborative relation of Fudan and Waseda.
On the same day, the Fudan-Waseda Joint Symposium on Journalism was held. President Wang Shenghong and President Katsuhiko Shirai presented the opening ceremony and gave speeches. Representatives from the School of Journalism including Professor Tong Bing, Professor Zhang Haiying and Professor Li Shuanglong also attended the symposium.

Fudan Selected as Key Conservation Unit of Ancient Books
Fudan University was nominated and selected as Key Conservation Unit of Ancient Books in China.
Fudan library has a collection of more than 400,000 ancient books, among which 60,000 are well-preserved ancient books; more than 2,000 are listed in The Index of Well-Preserved Ancient Books. The quantity, quality, administration of the collection and research level on ancient books are all in the leading position among all university libraries. In 2005, the university allocated 3000,000 CNY to make special camphor wood bookcases to improve the conservation of the books. In 2007, the university vacated the rooms on the fifth and sixth floor of the Guanghua Towers as the stack room, reading room and administration office for the ancient books.
On November 12, the naming ceremony was held in Guanghua Towers. Senior academics such as Qiu Xigui, Ge Zhaoguang, Zhou Zhenhe, Chen Shangjun, Zhang Rulun and the administrative heads of related departments attended the ceremony. Prof. Qin Chaode, Chancellor of Fudan University, and Prof. Qiu Xigui revealed the plaque, and Vice President Gui Yonghao made remarks on the occasion. Senior researcher Chen Xianxing and expert in Historical Geography Prof. Zhou Zhenhe delivered speeches to express their congratulations. The whole ceremony was hosted by Prof. Ge Jianxiong.
Key Conservation Unit of Ancient Books is nominated and financed by State Council to those that have a large collection of well-preserved ancient books. In April, Fudan was rewarded the title. The block-printed edition The History of Song as Continuation of The General Mirror for the Aid of Government was listed in The Index of Precious Ancient Books of China.

Research Center of Oral History Established at Fudan
On the morning of November 15, the launching ceremony of the book Witness the 30-year history since Opening-up and Reform Policy in Shanghai and Opening Ceremony of the Research Center of Oral History was held at Fudan.
Aiming to record the social development, key events and various life experiences of different circles of the people, Fudan Department of History initiated to establish the research center for scholars and experts from academia, journalistic profession and publication. Prof. Jin Guangyao and Professor Cao Jingxing are the co-directors of the research center.
Year 2008 being the 30th year since the reform and opening-up policy was adopted in China, the center decided to take the project of the 30-year history of Shanghai as the first project. The book mentioned above was a result of the project, studying the key events and key figures in Shanghai in the past 30 years using the application of oral history study methodology.
Pro-Vice President Sang Yucheng, Editor-in-chief of Shanghai Lexicographic Publishing House Pan Tao, Guest Professor at Department of History Cao Jingxing, and Director of Department of History Professor Zhang Qing attended the ceremony. The book of Witness the 30-year history since Opening-up and Reform Policy in Shanghai was edited by the Research Center of Oral History with Prof. Cao Jingxing as the Editor-in-chief.
After the opening ceremony, Professor Cao Jinxing also held a lecture on his own experience with oral history work.

Fudan University Education Development Foundation Launched in HK
On the evening of November 18, 2008, Fudan University Education Development Foundation (Hong Kong) hosted an inauguration banquet at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong.
Mr. Li Gang, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People抯 Government in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Dr. Lee Shau Kee, Chairman of Henderson Land Development Co., Ltd. and Fudan Board Member; Dr. Lui Che Woo, Chairman of Kwah Group and Fudan Board Member; Dr. Alice Lam Lee Kiu-yue, Chair of Education Committee of Hong Kong and Fudan Board Member; Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, Vice-Chancellor of Chinese University of Hong Kong and Fudan Board Member, University manager; Prof. Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong; as well as other guests from the HKSAR government, business, and academic circles attended the banquet. Nearly 300 people including Fudan alumni, Board Members, people from all walks of life, university leaders, and relevant departments representatives witnessed the establishment of the Foundation. Mr. Francis T.F. Yuen, Vice President of Pacific Century Regional Developments Ltd. and Fudan Board Member presided over the banquet. At the ceremony, Chancellor Qin Shaode, Chairman of the Foundation and Board of Directors made a speech, introducing the Foundation and looking forward to the future development of the Foundation. 8 Board Members joined the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Dr Lee Shau-kee, and Dr. Lui Che-woo delivered their congratulation speeches. Dr. Li Dak-sum, Dr. Chen Tseng-tao and Dr. Chiang Chen also sent their best wishes to the Foundation.
The banquet was followed by a panel on the challenges and opportunities in the financial crisis, with Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, Fudan Alumnus He Hua, Head of Nomura Asian Equity Research Department, and Fudan Alumnus Ma Jun, Chief Economist of Deutsche Bank Greater China Area, as the panelists. The audience as well as the panelists wished closer cooperation between the mainland and HKSAR. Prof. Shi Lei from Fudan School of Economics who was also Director of Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute was the facilitator of the panel.
The celebration was greatly supported by Fudan Board Members and alumni in Hong Kong. Si Yuan Foundation, Shui On Land Limited, Chiang Chen Industrial Charity Fund contributed generous support to FUEDF. Fudan University Alumni Association of Hong Kong was the local organizer of the function. Some of the alumni in Hong Kong also actively participated in the preparations.
In addition, a press conference was held before the celebration. Foundation Chairman and Fudan Chancellor Prof. Qin Shaode and representatives of the Board Members answered the questions raised by Hong Kong media and other communities, such as the nature and mission of the Foundation, the intent and purpose to set up the Foundation in Hong Kong, Fudan and its relations with Hong Kong, the present and future of Fudan University, etc.

Minhu Venture Team Wins the Gold Medal in the 6th "Challenge Cup"
The sixth "Challenge Cup"--- Chinese students venture plan competition closed on November 19. Minhu Plasma Science and Technology Co., Ltd. team comprised of five students from Fudan University, namely Xu Bo, Guo Shaofeng, Huang Pengpeng, Lu Wei and Zhang Huawei, won the gold medal. The final of this year抯 "Challenge Cup" was held in Sichuan University, Sichuan Province after the earthquake. 168 teams of 118 universities from mainland China, Hongkong and Macao participated in the final and competed for 31 gold medals. Minghu enterprise team of Fudan University won the gold medal with their fine preparations and hard training in the past six months. Minghu Plasma Science and Technology Co. Ltd founded by students from Fudan University is an enterprise which provides refined plasma cutting equipments. Its core technology for precise plasma cutting machine has already obtained three patents, while its products have been regarded by the Industry Association as having leading technologies according to domestic and international standards. Moreover, two other teams from Fudan, P.U.R.E Co., Ltd. venture team and Catchme sound-control project team won the bronze medal this year.
The venture plan competition originated from the United States, which is also known as commercial plan competition, and has been very popular among universities around the world. It follows the model of venture capital investment that requires participants to form a competition group with complementary advantages,proposing a prospective technique, product or service and completing an integral, specific and intensive plan for the venture capital. "Challenge Cup" is co-sponsored by the Central Committee of the Youth Legal, China Association of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education and Chinese Student Union. It has two categories of competition, extracurricular scientific and technological project competition and venture plan competition. It is held every two years and widely regarded as "the Olympic Games of Science and Technology for Chinese Students". The first five "challenge Cup" in the year of 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2008 were successfully held in Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University, Xiamen University and Shangdong University respectively.

Fudan Management Award for Outstanding Contributions 2008
On November 20 in the city of Shen Zhen, Fudan Management Award for Outstand Contributions went to Professor Hao Mo from School of Public Health at Fudan University, Professor Hu An抔ang, Director of Center for China Study at Chinese Academy of Sciences & Tsinghua University and Professor Huang Jikun, Director of Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy at Chinese Academy of Sciences with a cash reward of one million CNY in total.
The rewarding ceremony was presided over by Mr. Li Lanqing, former Vice Premier of China and President of the Fudan Premium Fund of Management. Mr. Wang Yang, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Committee were also present.
Fudan Management International Forum was held on the same day. This year the topic of the Forum was "Public Management: Reform and Development". Distinguished scholars and business leaders attended the Forum and held discussions on ad-hoc topics in the field of public management in China. Professor Cheng Siwei, Professor Zheng Bijian and Professor Wei Liqun delivered keynote speeches.
As the very first foundation of management established by a Chinese individual, Fudan Premium Fund of Management was initiated by Mr. Li Lanqing, an outstanding alumnus of Fudan, in 2005.

2008 International Medical School Deans Summit Concludes
2008 International Medical School Deans Summit was held in People抯 Great Hall on November 22 in Beijing. Fudan Executive Vice President Prof. Wang Weiping, Academician Prof. Chen Haozhu and Prof. Yao Tai, Prof. Wu Zhaohan, Prof. Lu Chuanzhen, Prof. Feng Youji and Prof. Zhu Danian were invited to participate in the General Assembly.
Scholars of top medical schools from China, the United States of America, the Great Britain and other countries, academicians from Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering discussed the status quo and developing trends in the field of medical education in order to improve the teaching methods and to promote exchanges and cooperation among each other. Prof. Wang Weiping delivered a speech on "General Education and Chinese Higher Education of Medical Science".

Fudan Wins Top Prize at 2008 CCTV National English Speaking Contest
On the evening of November 26, six contestants who had already competed for several rounds went for the final of 2008 CCTV National English Speaking Contest. Shi Yupeng from Life Science Class 2011 of Fudan University won top prize.

Academician Prof. LI Daqian Awarded Legion of Honor by France
To acknowledge outstanding contributions to the Sino-French applied mathematics studies, Mr. Herv?LADSOUS, French Ambassador to Beijing as representative of the French government, awarded Academician Prof. LI Daqian from School of Mathematical Sciences of Fudan University with Knight Order of the Legion of Honor at the medal-conferring ceremony held in Consulate General of the Republic of France in Shanghai on November 14.
Also at present were Mr. Thierry MATHOU, Consul General of France in Shanghai, Prof. Chen Xiaoman, Vice President of Fudan University, and more than 60 representatives from School of Mathematical Sciences.
Created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Legion of Honor is the highest award given by the French Republic for outstanding service to France, regardless of the social status or the nationality of the recipients.

Fudan Professor Elected President for ISBR
On November 17, Prof. Lu Baorong from Fudan School of Life Sciences was elected the fourth President for International Society for Biosafety Research (ISBR) during the 10th International Symposium on the Biosafety of Genetically Modified Organisms (ISBGMO) in New Zealand.
Prof. Lu is so far the first Chinese scientist elected as President in the history of ISBR, which signifies the recognition on the important contribution by China in research on trans-gene and biosafety. The former three presidents were from U.S.A., Germany and Belgium respectively.
Prof. Lu Baorong has gained international renown for his research in wild relatives of major grain crops. A professor in botany and genetic resources at Fudan University, he has provided critical guidance on the biosafety of GM crops, in particular, the ecological consequences of trans-gene spread to sexually compatible relatives. In addition to his numerous international awards and editorial contributions, Professor Lu serves on many influential committees, including the Chinese National Biosafety Committee.

Visit by the Norwegian Minister of Research and Higher Education
On November 6th, Ms Tora Aasland, Norwegian Minister of Research and Higher Education, visited Fudan University. With her was a delegation consisting of high officials from various Norwegian education departments, presidents and directors from various Norwegian Universities and schools. The Norwegian Consul General in Shanghai, Mr. Fred Nomme, also accompanied the delegation.
The delegation has already been on a week- long visit to both Shanghai and Beijing and was very pleased by what they had gotten to experience so far. Here at Fudan University the delegation met with various distinguished leaders at Fudan like Chancellor Qin Shaode, Professor Sun Jian, Chair of English Department and Director of Research Centre for Nordic Literatures, Professor Yu Yihong, Associate Dean of School of Management, Dr. Zhu Chouwen, Director of Fudan Medical Centre Office and Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Office, just to mention some. Minister Aasland and the delegation learned about the University, Nordic Centre, as well as various cooperation between Fudan and Norwegian universities, and witnessed the signing between BI Norwegian School of Management and Skaugen Holding Co Ltd for funding of a newly established research center between BI Norwegian School of Management and Fudan School of Management.
After the ceremony was over the delegation got the chance to meet with Norwegian exchange students at Fudan.

Visit by Mayor of Amsterdam
Mayor of Amsterdam Mr. Job Cohen visited Fudan University on November 6. Vice President Prof. Gui Yonghao met his delegation that included members from government and other bureaus. During the discussion, Mayor Cohen highly appreciated cooperation between universities in Amsterdam and Fudan University, at the same time, he wished that Fudan University would enhance the collaboration in teachers exchange, student exchange and lab cooperation with Dutch institutes.
After the meeting, Mayor Cohen made a speech on "Better City better Life: the Spirit of Amsterdam in the 17th Century, from A Contemporary Perspective".

Visit by Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. of Colorado State
Mr. Bill Ritter, Jr., Governor of Colorado State, visited Fudan on November 24. Chancellor Qin Shaode and Vice President Jin Li warmly welcomed the delegation and attended the following seminars on bioscience and new energy economy together.
Vice President Jin, who is also a renowned expert in genetics, presided over the opening ceremony of the seminars. Chancellor Qin gave remarks on this occasion and briefly introduced Fudan抯 researches on renewable energy and bioscience, addressing that energy problem has increasingly become a universal concern. He also expressed Fudan抯 hope to foster long-term collaborations with the State of Colorado, which is well-known as the most important contributor to the U.S. renewable energy development. The Governor also reviewed contributions made by Colorado to energy development, and wished to see multi-dimensional cooperation between Colorado and Fudan after the seminars.
The two seminars respectively on New Energy Economy and Bioscience are to promote exchanges and to enhance mutual understanding. Prof. Zhao Dongyuan from Fudan Chemistry Department, Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, joined the New Energy Economy Seminar and delivered a keynote speech. Prof. Wu Yuping from Fudan Chemistry Department co-chaired the seminar and gave keynote speech as well. At the Bioscience Seminar, Fudan was represented by Prof. Lu Baorong, Chair of Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He was unanimously elected to co-chair this seminar while sharing his keynote. Both seminars were applauded by bilateral audience.
Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. was invited by China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, to pay official visits to institutions and governments in Beijing and Shanghai.

Night of Belgium Music
On November 24, a chamber music concert from the Royal Conservatory of Mons Belgium was held in Guanghua Towers. The concert was co-organized by General Consulate of Belgium in Shanghai, Fudan University, Fudan French Department and Communaute Francaise de Belgique WAllonie-Bruxelles.
Three musicians were invited to perform for the faculty and students. Tenor Thierry Migliorini sang songs including Je t抋i donn?mon c渦r and O Sole Mio; the pianist Johan Schmidt performed pieces like Rapsodies Hongroises No 2 and No 6; while the cellist Gao Xuewen performed pieces like Gada Meilin. Every piece of work won bravo. During the intermission of the concert, audience also tried the Belgium beer presented as a gift from the Consulate General.
